SMART MONITORING & PROTECTION RELAY

Digital monitoring of key operating parameters improves transformer

reliability, security and availability of key information for maintenance
decisions and asset life-cycle management & optimization.
e-DMCR, designed and manufactured in France by IDEF SYSTEMES, is an
innovative, cost-effective, next generation monitoring & protection solution
for oil-filled distribution transformers which combines in a single, integrated,
compact and solid device:
• Condition-based Monitoring: real-time, continuous measurement
of the key transformer non-electrical operating parameters: oil and
ambient temperature, tank pressure, oil level as well as the status of the
electromechanical security contacts and switching events;
• Security: all the electro-mechanical security functions offered by the
Standard DMCR relay remain in place: full compliance with Standard
IEC 60076-22-1 is maintained;
• Data logging, recording and pre-processing: data collection, recording
and pre-processing of the non-electrical operating parameters as well
as the status of the electromechanical security contacts and alarms;
• Communication: real-time access with Modbus RTU protocol through
RS485 based connectivity.
e-DMCR has the same mechanical interfaces as a Standard DMCR. It can
therefore be easily fitted on the transformer in replacement of a standard
protection relay and only requires an additional 24VDC power supply for the
electronic module.

CONDITION-BASED TRANSFORMER MONITORING

Through its array of digital sensors directly integrated on e-DMCR, the

system provides continuous real-time monitoring of the key operating non-
electrical transformer parameters:
• Oil Temperature inside the tank
• Ambiant temperature inside the electronic module
e-DMCR
Monitoring & Protection • Oil Level: position of the small float
System • Tank Pressure
• States of the electromechanical security contacts

PROTECTION RELAY

e-DMCR provides the same complete security functions provided by the

standard DMCR relay electro-mechanical contacts.
Full compliance with Standard IEC 60076-22-1 is maintained and no
additional protection relay is required on the transformer.
Removing the 24VDC power supply to e-DMCR does not affect the
electromechanlical part of the relay.
For all technical information related to the protection relay security functions
of e-DMCR as well to the fitting and mounting of the device on the transformer
please refer to the DMCR technical manual.

DATA MANAGEMENT & COMMUNICATION

With its simple, cost-effective, “plug and play” philosophy, e-DMCR provides
RS485 based connectivity with Modbus RTU protocol.
Data management parameters are fully configurable through a PC-based
application:
• Collection: sampling rate for each monitored transformer parameter;
• Recording: data logging and retention, sequence of events following
alarms or rapid changes in key parameters;
• Pre-processing: only relevant data is stored on the device in order to
optimize memory usage;
• Alarms: digital alarm configuration.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

The installation, operation and any intervention or work carried on e-DMCR

should be strictly reserved to qualified and authorized personnel.
Before connecting e-DMCR to the power supply always ensure that all
connections are correct, that the power cables are not damaged and that
the supplied voltage is compatible with the admissible voltage range of the
device.
Do not open the electronic module. The touching of any internal components
can cause an electric shock, possible serious injuries and damage the device.
The opening of the electronic module will void the warranty.
e-DMCR should be protected from water ingress and UV radiations. The
ambient humidity should not exceed 90%.

CONNECTION & CABLING

The e-DMCR add-on electronic module can be removed and replaced

from its DMCR protection relay base without affecting the good functioning
and operation of the electomechanical security contacts. The protection
functions remain in operation.
The power supply and RS-485 communication interface are located inside
the electronic module, at the front-bottom side of the module, behind a hatch.
The opening and closing of the hatch are done with two torx T10 screws.
e-DMCR e-DMCR is equipped with three standard 2 and 3-contact 1.5mm² connecting
add-on electronic module bench as per the following cabling diagram:

Power supply RS485 IN RS485 OUT Rterm

On-On = 120Ω
+24V 0V A B GND A B GND
OFF-x = open

RS485 NETWORK CONNECTION

The resistance RTerm must be activated only in the last box.

A 24VDC with minimum 0.3A current is required for the power supply of the
electronic module. The admissible voltage range is 21.6V to 26.4V.
e-DMCR is equipped with two PG07 cable glands and the space for a third
one if necessary.
Shielding
We recommend the use of shielded cables for long runs and in case of
electrically noisy environment. If you use shielded cable, connect the shield
to earth ground nearby the e-DMCR device.
An example of cable reference which includes one pair for RS485 signals
and one pair for 24VDC power supply:
Modicon - UNI-TELWAY cable - screened twisted double pair
Ref: TSXCSA100 – EAN13: 3389110826753
Termination resistor
Termination resistor (120 ohms) can be inserted if necessary, depending on
the network topology and configuration.
