Tobul Piston Accumulators
Date: March 12, 2014
Product: Tobul 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 150, and 160 gallon piston type accumulators.
Affected
Assemblies: BOP stacks utilizing the below Tobul piston type accumulators.
Objective: To inform the industry of potential Tobul piston accumulator damage that can
occur due to trapped pressure between the piston seals.
Solution: To eliminate the possibility of trapped pressure between the piston seals, the
hydraulic fluid end PolyPak energizing O-ring needs to be removed. Obsoleting
the O-ring eliminates the PolyPak’s ability to retain pressure in the reverse
direction, which eliminates the high stress situation from occurring within the
lower retaining lip.
Recommendation:
At the next available maintenance cycle, perform the steps outlined in Tobul
Accumulator Disassembly Instructions (Horizontal) DI-01 and Tobul
Accumulator Assembly Instructions (Horizontal) AI-01. Tobul Seal Kit
Installation drawings SK 186A75-C-BP, SK187A75-CP, and SK220A75-JP are
included for additional detail while installing the seals onto the piston. Tobul
accumulator assembly drawings are also included for bolt and lifting device
thread sizes needed during assembly and disassembly of the accumulator
bottle. If pitting is present in or around the gas or hydraulic head seals, refer to
attached Tobul drawing B496, B498, and B499 to determine if the pitting will
affect sealing. If it is determined that pitting is in a non-acceptable area,
contact NOV service for assistance.
After performing the steps outlined to remedy the issue, seal integrity of the
unit needs to be verified. The steps for doing this are:
2. Remove the gas charge valve and ensure the hydraulic and gas ports are
open to atmospheric.
3. Connect shop air to the gas port and pressurize to shop line pressure to
ensure the piston is stroked down fully.
9. Install the gas charge valve into the gas port of the accumulator.
11. Spray the gas charge valve with soapy water and monitor for 5 minutes to
verify there are no leaks.
Warnings: 1. Do not use compressed gas to move the piston when performing any
of the attached assembly or disassembly procedures.
2. Trapped gas pressure can reside between the piston seals at the time
of disassembly. While removing the piston from the end of the
accumulator bottle, this trapped gas pressure can release suddenly. This
sudden release of pressure can be very loud and can also result in rapid
movement of the piston. Do not stand in front of the piston during piston
removal.
Operators should also refer to previous NOV Product Information Bulletins and Safety Alerts at
http://www.nov.com/drilling for additional information related to this issue and information
regarding safe operation, maintenance, and inspection criteria.
Failure to follow the recommendations and/or guidance in NOV Product Bulletins may
result in death, bodily injury or property damage.
Please contact your local National Oilwell Varco (NOV) Service Center if you have any
questions regarding this bulletin.

5. With all fittings removed from both ends of the accumulator, the
retaining rings can be removed. This is accomplished by using the
mounting holes in the retaining ring. Two grade 8 bolts should be
threaded into two opposing mounting holes. The bolts should be
threaded in until they bottom out, then backed out one turn.
Figure 2
6. Using a steel bar as shown, the retaining ring can be turned
counter‐clockwise to unscrew it from the cylinder.

8. After the retaining ring is removed, the head can be removed. This
is accomplished similarly to the retaining ring. Two grade 8 bolts
should be threaded into the mounting holes of the head. The head
can then be pulled out of the bore by hand. Care should be taken
not to damage the cylinder threads. If the head cannot be moved
by hand, swap one of the bolts for a lifting eye. Insert a prybar
into the eye and use it to break the head loose from the bore.
Figure 5
9. Before the head is completely out of the cylinder, one of the bolts Figure 5
can be swapped for a lifting eye in order to support the head. A hollow
metal bar can be slipped over the remaining bolt to help steady the
head.

11. With the heads and retaining ring removed, the piston can be removed
next. The bore between the piston and the end of the cylinder should be
thoroughly cleaned to prevent damage to the bore during removal.

15. Inspect the threads of the cylinder for burrs and debris and
clean as necessary.
16. Lubricate the threads with anti‐seize grease. Apply the anti‐
seize grease to the threads on the fluid end of the cylinder and the
threads of the assembly sleeve using a brush.
Figure 10
Figure 10
17. The assembly sleeve can now be installed into the fluid end of the
accumulator. Slowly turn the assembly sleeve until it bottoms out,
then back out 1/4 turn. Do not use excessive force when the sleeve
bottoms out as it can cause damage to the sleeve.

18. The piston must be either pushed or pulled out of the bore. The most
desirable method is to stand the unit vertically and pull the piston out
using a lifting device such as a crane or hoist. An eye‐bolt can be
threaded into the hole in the center of the piston. If this method
is used, a gap should be left between the cylinder and the floor to pre‐
vent a vacuum when pulling on the piston. If this method is not possible,
the piston can be pulled or pushed out horizontally. For pushing the
piston out, a large block of wood (e.g. long 4"x4") and deadblow
sledgehammer can be used. The block of wood should be wrapped in
clean rags to avoid scarring the bore.
Figure 12
Note: The piston can be extracted from either end of the accumulator.
19. The accumulator is now disassembled and ready for cleaning and
inspection. All components should be handled carefully and stored
in a clean protected environment.

2. Position a bright light at one end of the cylinder. From the opposite
end of the cylinder, visually inspect the bore for any scratches, scoring
or debris.
Figure 1
Figure 1
3. Clean rags can be tied to a non-metallic pole for cleaning the bore.
A teflon pole is suggested to prevent scratching. Once the clean
rags are tied to the pole, saturate them with cleaning solvent then
insert the pole into the bore of the cylinder.

4. With a circular motion, move the swab back and forth in the bore
until the bore is clean. Be sure to change the rags and re-wet them
with solvent until the bore is clean. Use dry clean rags to dry the bore.
This is a critical step! Any contamination left in the cylinder can
adversely affect the seal life and possibly damage the accumulator.
Figure 3
6. After a thorough cleaning, inspect the bore for any scratches Figure 3
or imperfections. Light scratches can be removed with a clean
scotchbrite pad or flap wheel, micro finish should be 16 RMS
or less. Light scratches may be visible but should not be able
to be felt by dragging a fingernail across them. If polishing the
bore is necessary, repeat steps 3 and 4 to ensure the bore is
clean. If there are deep scratches that cannot be removed by
these methods, contact Tobul.

7. Clean the retaining rings, piston and heads using clean rags and
clean solvent. After the components are thoroughly cleaned, inspect
them closely for scratches, burrs or other imperfections. If there
are minor defects, they can be cleaned up with scotchbrite or fine
grade sandpaper. If this is necessary, clean the component again.
Cover the cleaned components until they are ready for assembly.
Figure 5
If the scratches or imperfections are more severe, contact a Tobul
representative for further instructions.
8. After the piston is cleaned and inspected, a 1"-8 eye bolt can be used
to lift it and help with seal installation.

9. Inspect the two (2) lip seals for cuts and nicks that may cause
leakage.
Figure 8
10. One lip seal should be installed in each large groove on either end
of the piston. Remove the loader ring (o-ring) from the lip seal to be
used on the fluid end of the piston. Make sure the lip (larger side of
the seal) is facing outward. *If the seal is installed backwards, it will Figure 8
not function properly. Slide the seal over the first lip of the piston
into the groove and push it down until it is against the seal gland wall.

15. Inspect the piston assembly sleeve for damage and make sure it is
free from any scratches or debris before proceeding. The threads on
the OD should also be inspected and free of burrs and debris. The
sleeve covers the threads and protects the piston and seals from
damage during installation. It also compresses the seals as the piston
passes through to give a smooth transition into the bore of the
accumulator. Figure 13
16. Using disposable gloves, coat the inside of the piston sleeve with
Oceanic ACL Grease (p/n 174930) or equivalent. To avoid
contamination, do not attempt to put excess grease back into the Figure 13
container. Do not re-use the glove.

17. Again inspect the piston for cleanliness. Using clean disposable
gloves, coat the piston and installed seals with Oceanic ACL Grease.
When doing this, make sure the seals stay in place.
18. Lubricate the cylinder bore on the fluid end of the accumulator
approximately 12" inside using water based grease (ACL mixed with
water)
19. Lift the piston using the 1"-8 eye bolt and slowly lower it into the
sleeve. Care must be taken to insure the piston goes in straight
rather than at an angle. When all the weight of the piston Figure 15
is supported by the sleeve, the lifting device may be disconnected.
Drive the piston into the sleeve using a large dead blow sledge
hammer. Make sure the hammer is clean before coming into contact
with the piston.
Figure 15
20. When driving the piston into the sleeve, make sure the seals compress
and do not come out of place. Use caution when handling the sleeve.
The walls are very thin and can be easily damaged.

21. Once the piston is seated in the installation sleeve, clean off the face
of the piston and check for contamination.
22. Lift the piston installation sleeve by the handles. Have an operator
guide and steady the sleeve while moving it into the cylinder.
Check the bottom edge of the sleeve (thinnest part) for burrs or
debris. If the edge of the sleeve is damaged or dirty, this can damage
the piston/seals and contaminate the cylinder bore.

27. Slowly turn the assembly sleeve into the fluid end of the cylinder.
thread the sleeve in until it bottoms out, then back out 1/4 turn.
Do not use excessive force when the sleeve bottoms out as it can
cause damage to the sleeve, piston and seals.

Preparing and Installing Fluid Head
31. Inspect the fluid head for cleanliness and scratches or burrs.
A. Install the teflon back up ring by stretching the ring over the
lip of the fluid head and into the seal groove. Slide the ring
to the back wall of the groove. Make sure it is flat against
the wall and not twisted.
B. Install the O-ring by stretching it over the lip of the fluid
head into the seal groove. The O-ring should be outboard
of the back up.
Figure 21 A & B
32. Using clean disposable gloves, coat the fluid head seals with Oceanic
ACL Grease.

33. Check the bore of the cylinder for cleanliness. Re-coat the first 2"-3"
of the bore with Oceanic grease. Move the fluid head to the
fluid end of the cylinder. Slide a piece of steel tubing over the end
of the bolt screwed into the fluid head for leverage to position the
head and guide into the cylinder. Make sure everything is aligned.
Do not let the seals contact the threads. Push the head in making
sure it is centered. Once it is in the bore and bottomed out, the
deadblow hammer can be used to drive the head in the rest of the
way.
Figure 22
34. Check the threads in the cylinder for burrs and contamination. Coat Figure 22
the threads with teflon based anti-seize.

35. Check the fluid head retaining ring again for cleanliness. Coat the
threads of the retaining ring with Teflon anti-seize. Support the
retaining ring from the inside or the bottom to help with installation.
Line up the threads and slowly turn the retaining ring clockwise.
Once at least 1" of the ring is threaded into the cylinder, the support
can be removed.
Figure 24
36. Using a steel bar as shown, screw the retaining ring in until it bottoms Figure 24 Figure 25
out against the fluid head. The fluid retaining ring should be flush
(+/- 1/8") with the face of the cylinder. If the fluid retaining ring
is touching the fluid head and protruding further than 1/8" from the
cylinder, the dead blow hammer can be used to drive the head
further into the bore. If this is necessary, make sure the
retaining ring is screwed in the rest of the way.
