Summary: The dreadful history of the Baudelaire children begins with a deadpan
narrator, a terrible fire and the ominous arrival of a distant relative.

Standing in a dimly lit underground tun-

nel, Lemony Snicket lights a match, and
informs us, the viewers, that there is no
happy ending ahead. ”In this story, not
only is there no happy ending, there is
no happy beginning, and very few happy
things in the middle.” He advises us all to
watch something more pleasant instead.
The ground trembles above him, as a
rickety trolley passes along on its track.
Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire see a
fire engine rushing by, but don’t think too
much of it. They get off at Briny Beach on
a gray and cloudy morning: the perfect
weather for such an outing.
At the beach, Violet skips rocks, and decides to invent a rock retrieval device. The device is
successful, and she briefly celebrates with Klaus.
Hearing a sudden noise, Sunny turns her head to see a mysterious figure in the distance.
Violet recognises the shadowy creature as Mr. Poe, from the bank. After a long silence, the
Baudelaire children try to make conversation. ”I have some bad news for you children,” he finally
starts, ”Your parents have perished in a terrible fire.”
Visiting the Baudelaire Mansion, ravished by the fire, the Baudelaires find it’s nearly all gone.
As Mr. Poe starts to say, ”You have nothing—”. ”We have nothing,” realizes Klaus. He finds a
spyglass in a cabinet drawer. Part of it falls apart in his hand. As Mr. Poe explains about the
Baudelaire Fortune and their future guardianship, Klaus finds that the eye-shaped end of the
spyglass opens. Mr. Poe beckons for them to leave, and the Baudelaire orphans wistfully follow.
He explains in the car that until he finds the children a new guardian, they’ll stay with his family.
The Baudelaires have dinner at Mr. Poe’s house, where everything is boiled, with his wife,
Eleanora Poe, and two children, Edgar and Albert. Eleanora presents the latest issue of The
Daily Punctilio, whose front page headline is on the Baudelaire Fire. Later, as the Baudelaires

lay together on a single bed in Edgar and Albert’s room, Mrs. Poe prods them: ”You must feel
terrible, and you must miss your parents very much.” She gets Klaus to repeat it, for the following
morning’s headline. ”We Feel Terrible, and We Miss Our Parents Very Much”. It’s daylight, and
Mr. Poe takes the children to their ”closest living relative” and their new guardian, the mysterious
Count Olaf, who is employed as an actor.
Upon arriving at his address, they encounter Justice Strauss, a kind-hearted and child-loving
judge, who has a garden full of flowers and a library full of books. But sadly the children discover
that Justice Strauss is not in any way connected to Count Olaf, whose home looms ominously
across the street.
Mr. Poe rings the doorbell, and as they wait, mentions that Count Olaf said specifically that
he was ”very eager to get his hands on you”. Olaf lets them in, and immediately the children
notice the tattoo of an eye on their new guardian’s ankle.
They enter Count Olaf’s house, and see dirt and grime in every inch and corner. Count Olaf
says he could fix it up with some of the children’s wealth, but Mr. Poe corrects him: the Baudelaire
Fortune will not be inherited until Violet comes of age. Olaf soon pushes Mr. Poe out of the house.
He presents the orphans with a list of chores, and gives them a tour of their horrid new
”home”. At the end of it, he shows them to their room. Out of all the numerous rooms in his
mansion, Count Olaf has given them the most cramped quarters, and only one bed, with com-
plementary rocks on the side.
Violet notes that first impressions are often very wrong. ”Very true. For example, your first
impression of me may be that I am a terrible person. But, in time Baudelaires, I hope you’ll come
to realize... you haven’t the faintest idea.”
While Olaf has them cleaning the bathroom with toothbrushes, Justice Strauss rings on door-
bell, and talks to Count Olaf. She’s made the Baudelaires lamb, but Olaf convinces her that
they’re violent and ungrateful spoiled monsters. He chomps on the lamb himself in front of the
children, and dismisses Justice Strauss, saying the children don’t want to see her, as the lamb
was too salty.
Meeting the orphans upstairs, he finds they completed his list, and adds that they have to
prepare dinner for his theater troupe, who are coming tonight. Violet has the idea to check
Justice Strauss’ library for cookbooks.
They decide on pasta puttanesca, and go with Justice Strauss to pick up the ingredients they
need. When they arrive back to Olaf’s house, he and his troupe put on a musical performance
entitled ”The Count”. It’s the count, it’s the count, it’s the count. It’s the count, it’s the count, it’s
the count.
As the troupe drinks ”Merlote” in the dining room, the Baudelaire children prepare dinner
in the kitchen. They prepare the sauce, Violet fixes the pasta maker to make fresh pasta, and
Sunny shreds the parsley with her teeth.
As Count Olaf gives a soliloquy to his troupe about acting, the children serve dinner, which
everyone but Olaf agrees is delicious. When Olaf finds out what they are serving, he demands to
know why they were not given roast beef, as he had supposedly requested. He holds Sunny high
up in the air, and slaps Klaus across the face, leaving a large bruise on his cheek.
As they lay in bed that night, the Baudelaires consider that this hostile environment may
not, after all, be ”better than nothing”, as their father had once said. Meanwhile, Justice Strauss
reads up on Adoption Law & You.
Walking through the tunnels, Lemony Snicket discusses his dedication to researching and
documenting the lives of the Baudelaire children, no matter what dangers it puts him in. ”Trouble
and strife can cover this world like the dark of night, or like smoke from a suspicious fire. And
when that happens... all good, true and decent people know that it’s time to volunteer.”
Somewhere, in a cell, a mother and father are worried about their children. ”What’s that thing
Einstein said?”

Summary: While Mr. Poe’s secretary works overtime, Count Olaf casts Violet and
Klaus in “The Marvelous Marriage”, a work of theater with alarming
implications.

Count Olaf arrives at Mulctuary Money

Management suspiciously after the fate-
ful Baudelaire fire. Disguised as Yessica
Haircut, he secures a meeting with Mr.
Poe. Yessica learns that whoever lives the
closest to the Baudelaire home will be-
come the children’s guardian–thus hav-
ing access to their overwhelming fortune.
There is one flaw in Olaf’s masterful plan:
the inheritance will only be acquired after
Violet comes of age.
Not a patient man, Olaf creates a mas-
terful plan that will guarantee access to
the wealth he so desires immediately. All
he has to do is marry Violet. He convinces
the children to join his play ”The Marvelous Marriage” by Al Funcoot, which is only a scam to
hide the wedding in plain sight. Olaf is cast as the leading man and Violet, obviously, is his
blushing bride. The children see through Olaf’s plan and Klaus decides that he must find a way
to put a stop to it.
He visits Justice Strausss and uses her law library to do a little research. He learns that
Violet cannot get married without the permission of her legal guardian since she is underage.
Unfortunately, her guardian is her fiancee, Count Olaf. Once she signs the marriage document
in her own hand, their union is completely valid and Olaf would’ve succeeded in getting the
Baudelaire Fortune.
The children try to confront Olaf but he threatens to harm Sunny if they don’t agree to play
along with his evil plot. Violet tries to rescue Sunny from the dangling birdcage with a grappling
hook of her own invention and Klaus desperately searches through the law books, looking for a
loophole. Both fail in their attempts and must act in the performance.
An oblivious Justice Strauss marries them and right after reveals what he’s done to the audi-
ence. He has finally won...that is until Sunny shows up having escaped from her prison. Relieved

that her sister is safe, Violet confesses to having signed the document with her left hand. She
normally writes with her right and that somehow invalidates the marriage.
The children are taken away from Olaf and Mr. Poe sets out to take them to their next closest
relative.
Imprisoned in an unknown location, Father and Mother make a plan to escape and return
home to their children.

Summary: After the Baudelaires move in with Dr. Montgomery, a renowned expert
in reptile behavior, their new guardian hires a frighteningly familiar
assistant.

The Baudelaires are taken to their origi-

nally intended guardian: Dr. Montgomery
Montgomery. They arrive at an ornate
mansion and are greeted by the doctor
with pieces of coconut cream cake. As
Montgomery or Monty gives the children
a tour of their new home, they come
across a picture of a piano with no one in
it. It’s the doctor’s only proof that he knew
their parents, explaining that the three of
them were hiding in the piano and had
unfortunately gotten locked in.
Monty shows the children his reptile
room, which is filled with various types
of reptiles. He introduces them to the In-
credibly Deadly Viper who turns out to be not as deadly as it appears. It takes an instant liking
to Sunny as it playfully curls around her. Monty encourages them to make themselves at home
and to read as many of the books as they like. It looked like the Baudelaire children’s luck was
turning...
Until Monty’s new assistant, Stephano, arrived at the front door. Stephano is really only a
poorly disguised Olaf. The children lock themselves in the Reptile Room and wait there until
Monty comes home from the running errands. Monty is possibly the only adult who believes
them when they say that Stephano is Olaf. He and the children come up with a plan to get rid
of him. They decide to go to the movies and watch a horribly named film called ”Zombies in the
Snow.” Unknown to Stephano, there is a hidden message in the subtitles that instructs Monty
to take the children to Peru on the SS Prospero.
After the movie, Monty is kidnapped by Olaf’s henchman but not for long. He manages to get
free and takes the children home so that they can plan their escape to Peru.

Summary: Klaus and Violet suspect Count Olaf and his evil cohorts when a life-
less body turns up in the reptile room. Sunny sees the inside of a
suitcase.

The Baudelaires wake up the next morn-

ing only to find that Monty has been
killed and left in the Reptile Room for
them to find. They immediately suspect
Stephano. Before they can do anything
about it, Stephano kidnaps Sunny and
promises to hurt her if Violet and Klaus
don’t go with him to Peru.
Unexpectedly, Mr. Poe appears but
doesn’t seem to recognize Stephano for
who he really is. Stephano explains
that Monty was killed the the Incredibly
Deadly Viper and that he must become
their new guardian. Mr. Poe refuses to lis-
ten to Klaus when he says that Stephano
is lying so the Baudelaires take matters into their own hands.
Klaus sneaks into the Reptile Room in search of one of Monty’s journal, convinced that there
must be notes about the viper in it. Meanwhile, Violet and Sunny go to Monty’s care and break
into Stephano’s suitcase. There they find a bunch of parts that, when assembled, become the
murder weapon. While Violet is distracted, Sunny manages to wander off and heads back to the
house with the Incredibly Deadly Viper.
The two give Mr. Poe a scare but, when he realizes that they are just playing, he comes to the
conclusion that the viper couldn’t have killed Monty. This is further cemented when Klaus reads
Monty’s notes clearly stating that the viper isn’t an aggressive reptile and when Violet puts the
murder weapon back together. Stephano is revealed to be Olaf (gasp!) but, just when Poe was
about to arrest him, the Count manages to get away. Again.
The Baudelaires follow Olaf into the garden maze, but run into Jacquelyn instead. Disguised
as a statue, she reveals that she was a friend of their parents and promises to do everything she
can to find Count Olaf. The children are taken away by Mr. Poe yet again and are shipped off to
their Aunt Josephine, who Jacquelyn said was a ”fierce and formidable woman.”

Summary: The orphans arrive at the aptly named Lake Lachrymose to meet their
widowed Aunt Josephine, a strict grammarian who’s haunted by the
past.

The Baudelaire children are left on

Damocles Dock and instructed by Mr. Poe
to take a taxi up to their Aunt Josephine’s
house. The house in question hangs off
the side of a cliff and nobody answers the
door when the children ring the doorbell.
Aunt Josephine greets them and wel-
comes them into her home. It’s a pecu-
liar home as they learn that the once
”fierce and formidable” Josephine is now
afraid of everything. She is also a stick-
ler for grammar and corrects the children
whenever they aren’t grammatically cor-
rect. She and her deceased husband Ike
were once friends with Father and Mother
and that they used to create secret codes when they would picnic together. Because of the ap-
proaching hurricane, Josephine leaves the children to go to the market and get supplies. Violet,
Sunny, and Klaus use this time to do a little snooping.
They manage to get Josephine’s safe open and find pictures of the once ”fierce” woman. Be-
neath the pictures, there is a book titled, ”The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations.” Before
they can read it Josephine returns and the children scramble to put everything back in its place.
She has come with an uninvited guest: Captain Sham aka Count Olaf. Unlike Monty, Josephine
doesn’t see through his disguise and the two go out to spend a romantic evening together.
The children are left to think of their own escape plan but are interrupted when they hear a
sound coming from downstairs. They rush down and find that Aunt Josephine has jumped to
her death. Klaus finds a suicide note that once again named Count Olaf as their guardian.
Meanwhile, Father and Mother steal a plane and escape after receiving a coded message.

Summary: Klaus and Violet look for clues in a suspicious note that passes cus-
tody to Captain Sham, a seafaring scam artist with clear ties to Count
Olaf.

The next day, Mr. Poe arrives and listens

as the Baudelaires accuse Count Olaf of
killing their Aunt. They show him the
supposedly forged note. He compares it to
one of Josephine’s grocery lists, and the
children are surprised when the hand-
writing matches.
Mr. Poe right away dismisses the idea
that this was all set up by Count Olaf. Vi-
olet and Klaus are frustrated but have no
proof to support their claims. The group
go to brunch with Mr. Poe and surpris-
ingly Captain Sham. The waiter at the
restaurant tries to help the children and
gives them some peppermints. The chil-
dren eat the candy and break out in hives as they are allergic to peppermint.
This gives them the excuse to return to Aunt Josephine’s house and more time for them to
study the note. Klaus realizes that there is a hidden message in it and they learn that she is
still alive but hiding in Curdled Cave. Suddenly the house is blown off the cliff and Klaus nearly
plummets to his death. Luckily, they manage to escape with a picture of their parents as an
unfortunate keepsake. The wide window
Violet, Klaus, and Sunny on Captain Sham’s sail boat.
The Baudelaire children ”borrow” a sailboat and set sail to find their Aunt. Once they do, they
have a hard time trying to convince her to come back with them. Josephine tells them that she’s
scared, particularly because her husband was killed by leeches from the lake. She only leaves
after Klaus points out that the cave is for sale. On their journey back, as luck would have it, their
boat is attacked by leeches. Violet and Klaus come up with the idea to light Josephine’s scarf on
fire and use it as a signal.
They are rescued by a ferry boat with Captain Sham on board. Aunt Josephine and Olaf have a
heated argument after it’s revealed that Olaf killed her husband with beef tamales. Unfortunately,

Olaf manages to push her overboard and she is eaten by the hungry leeches. When they return
to the dock, Mr. Poe is waiting for them and is ready to turn them over to Captain Sham, who is
revealed to be Count Olaf after Sunny chews through his fake peg leg.
The two argue about who gets the kids now that Captain Sham isn’t really Captain Sham.
While they are distracted, the children make a quick getaway as they hitch a ride to Lucky

Summary: The children arrive at Lucky Smells Lumbermill and unearth some
unsettling accusations about their parents. Count Olaf courts an old
flame.

The Baudelaires arrive at Lucky Smells

but they don’t receive a very warm wel-
come. According to the workers that
they meet, their parents were responsible
for burning down the surrounding town
of Paltryville, something the Baudelaires
immediately believe to be false. The Lucky
Smells Lumbermill owners, Charles and
Sir, put the children to work. Violet and
Klaus argue about staying at the mill.
Violet is curious to know why her par-
ents are believed to have burned the town
down but Klaus doesn’t feel safe at the
mill, believing that Count Olaf may find
them there.
On their first day of work, the foreman trips Klaus up with his foot and stamps on his glasses.
Against his wishes, he is encouraged to visit Dr. Georgina Orwell, the local optometrist. Klaus
doesn’t know that Georgina is an ex-girlfriend of Count Olaf’s, or that they are now reunited
and working together to destroy the children’s lives. He is therefore taken by surprise when the
doctor takes him hostage and proceeds to hypnotize him.
Violet and Sunny visit the mill’s library in search of the town’s history book. They manage to
find an extract that features their parents, but every book they initially find has had the extract
censored topping the blame for the fire of Paltryville at them. Finally, they find one book that
hasn’t had the first chapter redacted, but Sir arrives before they can read what it says. Later,
Violet is suspicious that something is wrong with Klaus. He isn’t himself and almost harms
Sunny with a wood chipper before Violet manages to snap him out of his hypnotized state with a
code word, not realizing that the word controlled his hypnotism.
The Baudelaires are caught by surprise when they are told that they have visitors. Unfortu-
nately, it isn’t the father and mother of the Baudelaires, but Dr. Orwell and Olaf, disguised as a
female receptionist. Father and Mother are subsequently revealed to be Mr. and Mrs. Quagmire,
not the children’s parents as the audience are led to believe.

Summary: Klaus just isn’t himself after seeing Dr. Orwell, an optometrist with
oddly optimistic patients. Meanwhile, Violet works to clear her parents’
names.

Upon the arrival of Dr. Orwell and

Shirley, the Baudelaire children try to
convince Sir that Shirley is really Count
Olaf in disguise. However, like all of the
other adults so far, he doesn’t listen to
their accusation.
The optometrist and her secretary
have come to put their dastardly plan into
motion. They will use a hypnotized Klaus
to stir up trouble around the Mill. This
will cause Sir to kick them out and leave
them at the mercy of the Count.
Orwell has been giving the Mill work-
ers ”free eye exams” and has been hyp-
notizing them all these years. The Baude-
laires realize that that’s why the workers are so mellow and they take it upon themselves to find a
cure. In the nick of time, Violet figures out that the words ”inordinate” and ”fire” will snap Klaus
and the workers out of their trance. By saying ”inordinate,” she manages to prevent Klaus from
sawing Charles in half.
Now aware of their poor living and working conditions, the workers begin to revolt. This causes
Orwell to trip and fall into the incinerator, while Count Olaf manages to escape with his Hook-
handed associate. Nearby, the Quagmire Mansion is burnt down by an unknown assailant, by
means of a laser aimed through the window.
Mr. Poe finds the Baudelaires after Dr. Orwell’s accident is discovered by his wife, Eleanora,
and takes them to Prufrock Preparatory School. Snicket reveals that there they will meet and
befriend the Quagmires, who are shown to be sitting just behind them. It is also revealed, by
means of an old photograph, that Lemony Snicket and Count Olaf were both former students of
the preparatory school.

Summary: The Baudelaires begin life at boarding school and meet a pair of mys-
terious siblings whose tragic lives sound eerily similar to their own.

The show starts with Violet, Klaus

and Sunny waiting at Prufrock Prepara-
tory School. The Baudelaires feel as if
they’ve been sitting on the bench for
months waiting for their appointment
with Vice Principal Nero; Klaus remarks
that Sunny looks less like a baby and
more like a toddler and Sunny wonders
”growth spurt?”, a joke to canonically ex-
plain why the Baudelaires are slightly
taller and why Klaus’ voice is suddenly lower, as a result of the time that passed between the
filming of Season 1 and Season 2.
On the back of the bench they’re sitting at are a pair of siblings: Duncan and Isadora Quag-
mire. The Baudelaires listen to their vice principal’s terrible violin playing and are then taken
by a conceited and spoiled girl, Carmelita Spats, on a school tour who then takes them by the
library.
Meanwhile, Jacquelyn and a man who works in the same organization, Larry the Waiter,
discuss how they will get an important book, The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations, to
the Baudelaires, one that will answer all of their questions. Count Olaf overhears them and tries
to sabotage the Baudelaires. Olaf and his troupe steal a school bus on its way to the school and
enter the schoolgrounds.
Back at school, the Baudelaires finish their tour with Carmelita, who asks for a tip at the
end. Nero explains that the Baudelaires will be forced to live in a shack due to technicalities. An
advanced computer system will ensure Count Olaf does not enter the school. Because Sunny is
too young to attend school, she will be Nero’s secretary.

A Series of Unfortunate Events Episode Guide

Meanwhile, while hiding behind bleachers, Olaf makes a deal with Carmelita.
After classes, the Baudelaires befriend the set of triplets, the Quagmires. They learn they have
a brother called Quigley who died in a fire, but they prefer to be called triplets instead of twins.
The Baudelaires and Quagmires realize that their spyglasses fit together and search for a book
that will answer their questions. Coincidentally, it’s the same book the man was trying to deliver,
but he dropped it and now they have no idea where it is. The five children go to the library, but
the librarian reveals she does not have it.
Meanwhile, Nero has allowed Olaf and his troupe into the school. Olaf confronts Larry in the
cafeteria and he and his white-faced women lock Larry in a freezer. Larry calls Jacquelyn for help
and she sends Jacques Snicket to rescue him.
Later, during a pep rally, Nero reveals they have a new gym teacher: Coach Genghis who is
Count Olaf.

Summary: While the Quagmires keep up the search, the Baudelaires struggle to
balance their studies with a punishing workout schedule courtesy of
Count Olaf.

Count Olaf, disguised as Coach Genghis,

is the new coach at Prufrock Prepara-
tory School. The Baudelaires try to reveal
his identity but nobody believes them.
To keep them occupied, Olaf assigns
the Baudelaires a special exercise that
they must perform at sunset, known as
S.O.R.E. Their special exercise is to run
around in circles with paint until they
create a luminous circle.
The Quagmires try to help the Baude-
laires by going to see the librarian but
she hasn’t had any luck finding the book.
They run night after night which leads to
them doing poorly in their classes. The
Baudelaires are called into Principal Nero’s office and are reprimanded because of this. Olaf
suggests that they are homeschooled by him. Nero agrees that if the Baudelaires don’t pass their
exams tomorrow then they will be homeschooled.
The Baudelaires and Quagmires band together to create a diversion so that the Baudelaires
can study and run laps. The Quagmires switch places with the Baudelaires so that they can
study while they run laps. This works for a while until the fake baby’s rope they’ve been pulling
breaks. Olaf gets suspicious so he goes to kick the ”baby” but ends up kicking a bag of flour. The
Quagmires realize that the jig is up so they run off and hide in the library.
There they find the missing book and look through it to learn more about secret organizations
and their spyglass. Unfortunately, one of Olaf’s minions finds them in the library and they are
kidnapped.
Arthur Poe shows up to come and check on the Baudelaires. He tells them that he’s brought
paperwork for their homeschooling just in case they fail. They try to tell him about Count Olaf

but he believes that the computer system would’ve recognized him. The Baudelaires are called to
the stage in the auditorium to be tested.
The librarian leaves disgusted by what’s happening. She heads to the library but finds that
it’s been ransacked. She sees on the floor the book that the kids have been looking for. The
Baudelaires manage to pass their test. Nero allows them to stay for the remaining trimester.
Suddenly, Olaf says that he must also endure a gym teacher evaluation. He challenges them to
an arm wrestling match. He takes on both Violet and Klaus at the same time. They win with the
help of Sunny. Poe realizes that it is Count Olaf after Sunny reveals his tattoo on his ankle by
taking off his shoe.
Olaf runs away but the Baudelaires give chase. He manages to escape but takes the Quag-
mires with him. Isadora tries to tell them about V.F.D but ends up knocking their half of the
spyglass to the ground. The Baudelaires watch as Olaf escapes once again.

Summary: Violet, Klaus and Sunny get new guardians in a fashionable building,
where stairs are in — and the elevator’s out. Jacques Snicket trains a
recruit.

Arthur Poe has taken the Baudelaire chil-

dren to live with a new guardian: Jerome
Squalor and Esmé Squalor at 667 Dark
Avenue, a tall apartment building. The
Squalors live at the top floor in the
penthouse. The doorman explains to the
Baudelaires how the apartment is try-
ing to be fashionable and ”in” instead of
”out”, and so the elevator can not be used
because elevators are out.
After climbing stairs for a long time,
they meet their new guardians and see
their ridiculously large penthouse. The
Baudelaires find Count Olaf is already inside and he is pretending to be Gunther, a foreigner,
while in hiding from a citywide manhunt. The Squalors do not believe the Baudelaires when
they claim Gunther is Count Olaf. Violet Baudelaire searches their new penthouse apartment for
Duncan Quagmire and Isadora Quagmire but has no such luck.
The Prufrock librarian, Olivia Caliban, visits Poe and tries to tell him about how the orphans
are being taken advantage of. She has read the annotated copy of The Incomplete History of
Secret Organizations. Poe, of course, doesn’t listen, mainly because he is about to go on a heli-
copter search for the Quagmires. Jacquelyn has Jacques Snicket pick up Olivia and recruit her
into their secret organization.
Esmé takes the Baudelaires to Café Salmonella to have a long lunch. Meanwhile, Jacques
and Olivia search 667 Dark Avenue for the Quagmires. Olaf tries and succeeds in getting them
to switch locations and head over to the Herring Houdini, his own makeshift restaurant where
he plans on drugging the Squalors in order to kidnap the children.

The Baudelaires manage to escape lunch and head back to the penthouse to join the search.
They arrive at the penthouse floor and check out the second elevator that Klaus became suspi-
cious of. What they find instead of an elevator is just a long dark shaft.
Meanwhile, Larry the Waiter has convinced a reluctant Olaf to perform a song for them in
order to buy Jacques and Olivia more time. Together, the Baudelaires build a makeshift hot air
balloon and jump down into the shaft. At the bottom of the shaft, they find the Quagmires who
have been locked up in a cage.

Summary: The Baudelaires find their friends — and lose them — at the bottom of
an elevator shaft. Count Olaf conducts an auction in disguise.

The Baudelaires find the Quagmires at

the bottom of the shaft. They have no
tools to help them escape so they go
back up the shaft. Once they’re back at
the penthouse, they run into Esmé with
an unconscious Jerome. She asks what’s
wrong and they tell her about Count Olaf
and his evil plot. She actually believes
them and says that they must go to the
police. She doesn’t like the idea of having
to take the stairs again so she suggests
the elevator, but just as the doors open,
she pushes the Baudelaires down into the
shaft. They are miraculously saved by a
net that Count Olaf installed when they
removed the Quagmires to another location. Esmé reveals that she knew all along that Gunther
was Olaf as he was her former acting coach, and she wants to ”steal” from them because Beatrice
Baudelaire once stole from her.
The Baudelaires try to figure out how to get out of the shaft which leads to Sunny Baudelaire
climbing up it and returning to the penthouse for some tools. She returns with a cloak and a
length of rope. The children shimmy down to the bottom of the shaft and find a secret tunnel.
They find a trap door to the ruins of their old home and wonder why they would have a trap door
to begin with.
They coincidentally find Poe and his wife and hitch a car ride with them to the In Auction
hosted at Veblen Hall in order to save the Quagmires, which the Poes were coincidentally plan-
ning on going to anyway.

27
A Series of Unfortunate Events Episode Guide

The group arrives too late at the auction to bid on a giant red herring statue. A mysterious
box with ”VFD” on it, large enough to fit two Quagmires, is about to be bid on. At the request of
the Baudelaires, Poe tries to bid on the ”VFD” that the children want but gets outbid by one of
Olaf’s minions. Jerome suddenly appears after a long nap and begins to bid on it leading to Olaf,
Larry the Waiter, Jacquelyn, Olivia Caliban, and Jacques Snicket to bid in on it as well. Sunny
suddenly bids 1000 dollars and wins but when they open the box they find that it’s been filled
with Very Fancy Doilies.
While twirling his sharp cane, Olaf accidentally cuts his boot and he’s revealed his true iden-
tity to the public. Everyone wants him captured but Olaf and Esmé escape through a trap door.
Klaus says that the whole auction was a red herring and suddenly they realize that the Quag-
mires were put into the large statue of a red herring.
Jerome tries to dissuade the Baudelaires from chasing after Olaf but they are adamant about
saving their friends. Poe arrives after Jerome relinquishes his guardian rights and tells them that
he’ll be taking them to a faraway town called V.F.D. Jacques and Olivia continue their pursuit of
Count Olaf.

Summary: Mr. Poe brings the Baudelaires to V.F.D., a bird-loving village with
an Old West vibe. Jacques and Olivia continue their search for the
Quagmires.

Mr. Poe drops the Baudelaires off at the

Village of Fowl Devotees, where the whole
community will care for them collectively
(in reality, they just want the children to
do all their chores for them).
The Baudelaires take up residence
with Hector, a kindly handyman prone
to fainting spells whenever his courage
is tested. He is secretly building a self-
sustaining hot-air mobile home. The
Baudelaires soon begin finding clues;
they are couplets written by the Isadora
Quagmire and are found by the Never-
more Tree when the crows migrate.
Count Olaf, Esmé Squalor, and the troupe also arrive at the village, taking up residence in
an abandoned firehouse-turned-saloon, with Esmé disguising herself as the town’s new chief of
police, Officer Luciana. Jacques Snicket and Olivia Caliban also arrive and detain Olaf at the
local jailhouse, unaware of Esmé’s new role. Off-screen, Officer Luciana detains Jacques and
Olivia and sets Olaf free.
The next day, the villagers learn of Olaf’s capture and hold a town hall meeting, where Olaf
appears in the disguise of Detective Dupin, tricking everyone into believing Jacques is Olaf. For
unknown reasons, Jacques also has a tattoo of an eye on his ankle like Olaf. Jacques is found
guilty and sentenced to death. Before being transferred to the town’s jail, he begs the Baudelaire
to somehow free him.
In jail, Olivia convinces Esmé to free her and Jacques in exchange for the location of the
Sugar Bowl, an object with ties to Esmé’s past. Jacques directs Olivia to Madame Lulu, a fellow
associate, in order to find the Sugar Bowl before Esmé and Olaf do. Jacques will stay in the village

and protect the children. After Olivia leaves, Jacques confronts Olaf in the firehouse, revealing
Olaf’s past life as a V.F.D. agent. However, Olaf is unfazed by Jacques’ offer of a truce, and he
and Esmé incapacitate and kill him.
The next morning, the Baudelaires are informed that ”Olaf” has been murdered.

Summary: The orphans find themselves under suspicion in the wake of a devas-
tating murder. But time behind bars leads to an important realization.

Count Olaf and Esmé Squalor in their

disguises of Detective Dupin and Officer
Luciana quickly convinces the town that
the Baudelaires committed the murder of
”Olaf”, using tools from their attempt to
rescue Jacques Snicket the night before
as false evidence, and claiming Sunny bit
”Olaf” to death.
The Council of Elders condemn the
Baudelaires to be burned at the stake at
the suggestion of Mr. Lesko. While in jail,
the children convince Hector to prepare
his hot-air mobile home to help them es-
cape. Klaus deduces the clues point to a crow fountain in the village square, and after breaking
out of jail, find Duncan and Isadora Quagmire were trapped inside.
The villagers, led by Olaf and Esmé, arrive to take the children. At that time, Larry the Waiter
and Jacquelyn had learned of Jacques’ murder and they arrive to distract the villagers long
enough for the children to escape via a fire truck and follow Hector. The Baudelaires cover for
the Quagmires as they use the truck’s ladder to escape.
Just then, Olaf, Esmé, and villagers arrive and Esmé shoots some of the balloons on Hector’s
home with an arrow from her harpoon gun. The Baudelaires tell Hector to escape with the Quag-
mires. In thanks, the Quagmires try to throw their friends their notes about V.F.D., but Esmé
shoots them with arrow scattering the pages, but also harming a crow. While the villagers accost
Olaf and Esmé about the crow they harmed, the Baudelaires collect as many of the note pages
as they can and escape in the fire truck.

Summary: Life on the lam leads the Baudelaires to a horrifying hospital with an
enormous library that could hold the answers to all of their questions.

Having run out of gas, the Baudelaires

are forced to enter Last Chance General
Store for help. They attempt to use a tele-
graph machine to contact Mr. Poe, how-
ever, Count Olaf suddenly appears. They
evade Olaf and his troupe by sneaking
into a van labeled VFD. They are unex-
pectedly welcomed in by a group of opti-
mists called Volunteers Fighting Disease
who are on their way to Heimlich Hospi-
tal. The Baudelaires learn from the group
that there is, supposedly, a Library of
Records in the hospital that collects es-
oteric records which could help them and
answer their questions. The Baudelaires
also think that the hospital could be a safe place to hide from Olaf.
After sneaking past the hospital’s administration head and human resources manager Babs,
the Baudelaires meet Hal who runs the Hall of Records, who welcomes their help, but he only
allows them to help sort incoming material but not to read anything already there. The children
quickly gain Hal’s trust. While being shown the ropes, a film reel labeled ”Snicket” arrives; Hal
says he has a secret process where he stores similar records.
Meanwhile, believing the Sugar Bowl is somewhere in the hospital, Olaf and his troupe take
the role of doctors and nurses, and scare Babs as to seize control of the hospital, giving Olaf time
to find the Baudelaires and Esmé to find the Sugar Bowl. The children decide to steal Hal’s keys

to access the Library, where they find the film, which contains a debriefing by Jacques Snicket
that reports someone may have survived a fire. The Baudelaires suspect this may mean one of
their parents had survived the Baudelaire Mansion fire.
However, they are interrupted by Esmé, and as they try to escape, the Library is ruined. Violet
is captured by Olaf while Klaus and Sunny hide in the air vents.

Summary: A bearded Klaus and Sunny comb the hospital’s crumbling halls for Vi-
olet, who’s being held prisoner under Count Olaf’s questionable ”care.”

Count Olaf in the alias of Mattathias

Medicalschool and Esmé Squalor hide Vi-
olet Baudelaire as a patient in Heimlich
Hospital under a false name and warn the
rest of the hospital to watch out for Klaus
and Sunny, identifying them as murder-
ers.
Klaus and Sunny hide themselves
among the Volunteers Fighting Disease
singers to try to find Violet, and then later
don a disguise of a doctor. They eventu-
ally find the patient list after Sunny steals one from Olaf. Knowing Olaf’s tendency to use ana-
grams and using alphabet pasta, they deduce Violet is ”Laura V. Bleediotie” and find her room.
Upon entering the room, they realize this was a trap laid by Olaf when Esmé appears.
Olaf forces Klaus, in his disguise, to operate on Violet within an operating theater. Klaus stalls
as long as possible, and offers to tell Olaf the location of the film reel he saw. Olaf has Esmé keep
Klaus at bay while he checks the film, and learns about the survivor. He burns the film, which
starts a film in the hospital.
Klaus uses the fire as a distraction to rescue Violet, and the Baudelaires escape the hospital
among the mass evacuation. As there are police around, the Baudelaires recognize their only
chance to escape is in the trunk of Olaf’s car, as Olaf and his troupe head towards Madame
Lulu’s, hoping to learn more about the survivor of the fire. Elsewhere, an unknown person re-
covers the Sugar Bowl from the hospital.

Summary: Come one, come all to the creepiest circus the world has ever seen, a
place where puzzling mysteries — and a familiar face — await.

In the past, there is a celebration of the

V.F.D. headquarters that is attended by
Montgomery Montgomery, Josephine and
Ike Anwhistle, Gustav, Georgina Orwell,
and Jacques Snicket.
Lemony Snicket is too late to prevent
the murder of his love Beatrice by Olaf as
Larry forwards as message from Beatrice
to him.
In the present, Olaf and his troupe ar-
rive at the Caligari Carnival to speak to
Madame Lulu about who survived the fire. Olivia had already beaten them there and is posing
as Lulu and feigns a story that they will need to wait until the next day to learn the answer. The
Baudelaires overhear this. Wanting to speak to Lulu as well, take the guise as circus freaks with
Violet and Klaus as a two-headed person and Sunny as a wolf child.
After making a call to the secret organization, Olivia is able to tell Olaf the next day that it
was one of the Baudelaire parents that survived the fire in exchange for convincing him to use
his acting skills to lead a show. When the children learn this, they know must talk to Lulu, but
are forced to first participate in a circus with Olaf running it as ringmaster.
They meet the fellow freaks Hugo the Hunchback, Colette the Contortionist, and Kevin the
Ambidextrous Man. Olaf demands Lulu to provide more answers, but she cannot give those
until the next day. He sets off to find a pack of lions to re-invigorate the circus. This gives an
opportunity for the children to sneak into Lulu’s tent and discovers films, books, and disguises

Summary: Still posing as conjoined carnival freaks, the Baudelaires brace them-
selves for a beastly fate. Will good fortune intervene. . . for once?

Olivia explains to the Baudelaires how

she came to the carnival, and that
”Madame Lulu” is a title used by the
V.F.D. agents to gather information. She
had taken over for the last V.F.D. agent
while she had gone to the hospital to re-
cover the Sugar Bowl, while Olivia tried to
stall Olaf until her return by lying about
one of the Bauladiere parents surviving
the fire, though she believes Jacques was
correct that another person survived the
fired.
She suggests that the children head to the Mortmain Mountains where the secret headquar-
ters of the V.F.D. can be found. Violet suggests they fix the roller coaster cars to use as transport
the next day, particularly after learning that Olaf will throw one of the freaks into a pit with the
lions he acquired as part of the show the next day.
Esmé convinces the other freaks to join Olaf’s troupe as long as one of them push Lulu into
the lion pit the next day.
Before the Baudelaires and Olivia can escape, Olaf starts the show which is attended by
Mr. Poe, Mr. Remora, Mrs. Bass, and some villagers from the Village of Fowl Devotees. He selects
Violet and Klaus for the pit. Olivia sacrifices herself to allow the Baudelaires to escape by throwing
herself to the lions. When the children try to collect the V.F.D. material from Lulu’s tent, Olaf
arrives and forces them to burn the tent down, along with the rest of the circus.
Placing Violet and Klaus in a towed circus trailer and taking Sunny himself, Olaf and his
troupe drive along a steep mountain path.

Olaf reveals to Violet and Klaus he knew they were the Baudelaires, and on his orders, the
other circus freaks cut the towing rope; the circus trailer rolls backwards and hangs off the edge
of a cliff.
Later, the last operative to pose as Madame Lulu arrives at the burning remains of the circus
as Lemony describes her as someone he knows.

Summary: After foiling his many dastardly plans and disguises, the young sib-
lings might finally discover the truth about their parents’ mysterious
death, while unraveling the layers of a clandestine organization, and
revealing the secrets of the coveted, missing sugar bowl.

Klaus and Violet Baudelaire were in

the Freaks’ Caravan rolling down the
Mortmain Mountains. Violet creates a
makeshift drag chute while Klaus jams
the wheels with a paddle to stop the car-
avan from rolling. They nearly die but es-
cape.
Meanwhile, Kit Snicket escapes two
V.F.D. villains, the Man with a Beard but
No Hair and the Woman with Hair but No
Beard. They demand she gives them the
Sugar Bowl, but she escapes using the
wings of a dragonfly costume. The two
summon V.F.D. eagle to chase her. She
escapes by sinking into a hole in a frozen
stream. Once the eagles leave, she takes
a break and it is revealed she is pregnant.
Olaf’s troupe settles at Mount Fraught and force Sunny Baudelaire to do their chores. The
troupe orders Hugo, Colette and Kevin to chop wood somewhere.
Meanwhile, Violet and Klaus find a fork, with one way leading to Mount Fraught and the other
leading to the Valley of Four Drafts where the V.F.D. Headquarters is. Violet desires to go to the
Mount Fraught to save Sunny immediately, while Klaus desires to go to the headquarters to get
backup, such as from one of their parents who may have survived the fire, to save Sunny. Before
they decide, they are chased back down by snow gnats and enter a cave where they discover
Carmelita Spats traveling with a group of Snow Scouts and their leader Brucie.

A Series of Unfortunate Events Episode Guide

At Mount Fraught, Esme has found a pack of Verdant Flammable Device which look like green
cigarettes. Later on, the Hook-Handed Man helps Sunny make dinner.
In the cave, Carmelita tries to force the Baudelaires to leave. When she says ”Baudelaires”,
a boy in a mask gasps. He comes closer and pressures everyone to let the Baudelaires stay and
sleep with them for the cold night.
Somewhere else, Kit finds Hugo, Colette and Kevin. She warns them there are dangerous
people on the mountain before leaving. The villainous man and woman appear and point their
bladed canes at them, implying the trio are killed by the duo.
While the Baudelaires sleep, the masked boy shows the Baudelaires a passageway called the
Vertical Flame Diversion. They climb up it.
Back at Mulctuary Money Management, Mr. Poe shows Mrs. Bass the bank. She attacks him
and opens the vault. However, she decides to play a game of Go Fish with a tied-up Poe instead
of trying to flee. The police come and take Mrs. Bass away.
At Mount Fraught, Olaf insults Sunny’s dinner. The Man and Woman come and it is revealed
they are his adopted parents and mentors.
After climbing the Vertical Flame Diversion, they find a Vernacularly Fastened Door.
Meanwhile, Kit realizes she dropped the Sugar Bowl in the hole earlier, which means it floated
away in the Stricken Stream. Poe suddenly appears, saying he lost his map and is lost. He
mentions he experienced a bank robbery and was blamed by Mr. Tamerlane for it, so he decided
to flee town and search for some orphans he misplaced.
The Baudelaires open the door and find the burned ruins of the V.F.D. headquarters. It is
revealed the Man and Woman burned it down, and that the masked boy is Quigley Quagmire,
who Violet confuses as Duncan Quagmire.

Summary: Sunny sends a signal from Count Olaf’s camp, where a sinister duo
is awakening old insecurity. A clue at V.F.D. HQ points the way to a
fateful meeting.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, the siblings

and the boy come to the V.F.D. headquar-
ters and find it burnt. The boy reveals
himself to be Quigley Quagmire, who the
Baudelaires believed to be dead. Violet,
Klaus, and Quigley see the plume of green
smoke rising from the cliff so Violet in-
vents a device to help herself and Quigley
climb up the steep cliff to find out who
signaled them. During a rest on a ledge
of the cliff, Quigley appears to express ro-
mantic interest in Violet. At this point,
Lemony Snicket explains to the reader
that the Baudelaires have had little pri-
vacy in their life and that he will allow Vi-
olet to keep some things to herself. Some
speculation says it might imply the two share a kiss, admit their love and talk. This might mean
Violet had a crush on both Quigley and Duncan. Quigley, at least, is confirmed because, before
Lemony Snicket breaks off from this scene, he lets us hear two sentences. He tells us Violet tells
Quigley it’s a lovely view, but Snicket tells us that Quigley is looking at her.
He resumes the book when Quigley and Violet finish their climb and meet Sunny at the top.
Violet wants Sunny to return with them but she refuses, telling her sister that she can spy on
Olaf and learn useful information. Violet reluctantly agrees, realizing that Sunny is no longer a
baby.
Upon meeting again, Violet, Quigley, and Klaus hatch a plan to lure Esmé to them, trap her,
and use her to bait Olaf into giving Sunny back. They dig a pit and light a Verdant Flammable

Device next to it. Esmé sees some green smoke at the bottom of the slope. She goes down it,
thinking the smoke is coming from the ”in” cigarettes that she has now run out of. When she
reaches the bottom, she runs into three masked strangers and they help her climb back up the
slope hoping to get Sunny as their reward.
As they reach the top, the Snow Scouts reach the same peak of the same slope. However,
Olaf has sprung a trap to capture all of the scouts in a huge net. Klaus, Violet, and Quigley take
off their masks to convince the scouts to run. Olaf orders the two White-Faced Women to grab
them and throw Sunny off the mountain but they refuse and formally quit Olaf’s troupe. The
Baudelaires and Quigley are too late, as the Freaks, the scouts (except for Carmelita), and the
Hook-Handed Man are taken up into the net and carried off by eagles. Carmelita is convinced to
join Olaf and Esmé in their evil schemes while the Baudelaires and Quigley grab a sled and slide
down the slope. When they reach the bottom the entire side of the slope breaks open, causing
a waterfall. The Baudelaires and Quigley are separated. Quigley tries to tell them to meet him
somewhere but he cannot be heard over the rush of water.

Summary: A young submarine captain with ties to the V.F.D reveals she’s looking
for the sugar bowl. But so is Esme Squalor, who’s on a mission to find
it first.

The episode should begin immediately

after the events of The Slippery Slope
with the Baudelaires traveling on a col-
lapsing toboggan down the stream of
the Mortmain Mountains. The fire that
they helped Count Olaf begin at Caligari
Carnival is spreading through the hin-
terlands, and the children have trouble
avoiding it, even on the stream. Just as
hope seems lost, they are caught on a
submarine which rises from the waters.
Climbing over to the hatch a voice within
asks if the orphans are friends or foes.
They declare that they are friends. The
same voice asks for the password, and Vi-
olet guesses correctly the V.F.D. motto: The world is quiet here. The children descend into the
submarine, which they discover is the Queequeg captained by Captain Widdershins, a V.F.D.
member and old friend of the Baudelaire parents. Also on board is Widdershins’ stepdaughter
Fiona and the ship’s cook, Phil, the optimist who met the children while working at the Lucky
Smells Lumbermill in Paltryville.
The Baudelaires are welcomed on board, where they discover that the crew wears uniforms
with a picture of Herman Melville on them — are searching for the mysterious sugar bowl that
was thrown downstream. They have less than a week before the meeting at the Hotel Denoue-
ment which contains certain people that could destroy the V.F.D. forever. Widdershins runs on
the moral. He who hesitates is lost and Fiona, an expert mycologist, begins to fall for Klaus, who
returns the favor. Sunny, meanwhile, helps Phil cook dinner for everyone. Violet also learns that
Fiona and Widdershins have learned of the Baudelaires’ plight via their telegram device, which
is now broken. Although she tries to fix it, she realizes that someone — likely Olaf — is disrupt-
ing V.F.D. communications, explaining why the Baudelaires’ telegram to Mr. Poe in The Hostile
Hospital went unread. (The story of this is explained in Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Au-
tobiography.)

A Series of Unfortunate Events Episode Guide

Klaus, meanwhile, has examined the tidal charts to estimate the location of the sugar bowl
given the water cycle. He suspects it to be in the Gorgonian Grotto, located near Anwhistle Aquat-
ics. Widdershins explains that that aquatics center was founded by Aunt Josephine’s brother-
in-law, Gregor Anwhistle. At this time, the group are interrupted by an approaching submarine
vessel on the sonar. It is a ship in the shape of a giant octopus with many tentacles, and inside
they can see Count Olaf. Luckily, due to quick thinking, all the engines on the Queequeg are
turned off and Olaf does not notice them. Before long, however, a third shape appears on the
sonar, a mysterious object shaped like a question mark (possibly the Bombinating Beast) that
the crew do not see, but which clearly scares off Olaf’s vessel.
Over dinner, Widdershins attempts to match make Klaus and Fiona, to everyone’s discomfort.
Fiona explains her family situation — her brother Fernald has been missing for many years.
Her real father left when Fiona was small and Widdershins claims her mother died in a manatee
accident, although this may be untrue. Widdershins mentions the Snicket siblings, who fought
on the noble side of V.F.D.: Jacques Snicket, whom the children saw murdered in the Village of
Fowl Devotees, was a researcher similar to Klaus; Kit Snicket, who helped build the Queequeg;
and briefly mentions the third sibling before being cut off by Fiona.
Fiona asks about the message Violet and Klaus found for the mysterious J.S. at the former
V.F.D. headquarters. Widdershins doubts it would be for Jacques, who is dead, which gets the
group wondering about whose initials J.S. stands for. Fiona then looks in her mycological text-
books to discover information about the Gorgonian Grotto. It is a cone-shaped cave which houses
a rare species of poisonous mushroom, the Medusoid Mycelium. They wax and wane periodically,
but when waxing — as a poet says in her text — A single spore has such grim power/That you
may die within the hour. Because the Grotto is so remote, it acts as a quarantine for the Medusoid
Mycelium which would otherwise be unstoppable, although Fiona suspects there is an antidote.
Widdershins sends the children off to get some sleep, but steadfastly refuses to tell them about
the sugar bowl’s purpose in the plot.
Later, the children wake to find the submarine has arrived abruptly at the Grotto, and has
been damaged on the journey. Widdershins and Phil are too tall to fit into the smaller areas of the
grotto so Fiona, Klaus, Violet and Sunny (who cannot fit into a diving suit but instead floats in a
diving helmet) are sent in. Inside the grotto, the children find an area without water, an undersea
cave that appears to have belonged to someone in V.F.D. It is filled with items, mostly junk and
various food items, but is also — as Fiona discovers — the breeding ground of the Medusoid
Mycelium, which send the children scurrying into the far corner where they are safe while the
mushrooms rise out of the earth. The children start fighting over what to do next, which gets the
Baudelaires remembering their parents again.
At last, Klaus finds a poetry book — Versed Furtive Disclosure — and begins going through it
to see if it relates to V.F.D. As the three older children begin researching while they wait for the
mushrooms to die down, Sunny cooks a meal—pesto lo mein. Later, over dinner, they discuss
their findings. Klaus has found partial information of a code used by V.F.D. but not enough to
figure it out. Violet has found a letter to the now deceased Gregor Anwhistle from Kit Snicket. It
seems Gregor was going to use the mushroom to poison the enemies of V.F.D. Kit was working
on a way to dilute the poison, in a factory in Lousy Lane, but Gregor insisted on cultivating them
as they were in the Grotto. The mushrooms apparently poisoned the entire Aquatics center.
The children contemplate for a while how everything links together. But when Fiona asks Violet
about the newspaper article, Violet pretends it is too blurred to read. She can read it perfectly,
and whatever is on it concerns her.

Summary: With Sunny’s fate hanging in the balance, Violet and Klaus race to find
a life-saving antidote and learn the location of the Last Safe Place.

On returning to the submarine, the chil-

dren find Phil and Widdershins gone.
In their place are three balloons tied to
chairs, with the letters ”V”, ”F” and ”D” on
them. But this is little horror compared to
what happens next, as the children dis-
cover a spore of the mushroom has infil-
trated Sunny’s helmet and she is trapped
within it. Fiona stops Klaus from open-
ing the helmet, as in order to keep them-
selves from being affected themselves, for
the moment they must keep Sunny quarantined. She goes to work on an antidote while asking
the others to fire up the engines. Violet is suspicious but Klaus obeys orders. Just as the ship
starts up, Olaf’s submarine returns and engulfs the Queequeg in its ”jaw”. Olaf comes down to
the children and tells them that he has been at the Hotel Denouement preparing for his final
scheme, but had to return to search for the sugar bowl himself, which is the only thing he needs
to complete his nefarious plans. He is overjoyed to find he has also captured Fiona, and shows
little concern for Sunny’s condition. He is also working on perfecting a villainous laugh. As he
leads the children through to the brig, he marvels at the octopus submarine, which he stole,
which can apparently be used to destroy all of V.F.D.’s armies.
As the children enter the next room they see how the ship is powered, by dozens of children
rowing the ”tentacles”. Among them are children from Prufrock Preparatory School, the Snow
Scouts, and other children the Baudelaires do not recognize. Esmé Squalor, wearing an octopus
costume, is in charge of the children. She is stunned to see the Baudelaires alive, but happy
to have another chance to celebrate their deaths. Olaf’s group wear uniforms bearing images of
Edgar Guest, whom Lemony Snicket disparages in his narration. It is here that we learn the ship
is named the Carmelita, after Carmelita Spats who is also onboard and being spoiled by Esmé.
The children are taken to the brig where they are to be interrogated by The Hook-Handed Man,
until Fiona drops a surprise on them all; he is her brother Fernald. Fiona is stunned that her
brother is working as a villain, but Fernald defends his work saying that Olaf isn’t all evil, that no
one is entirely evil. Violet confesses that the newspaper article — by Jacques Snicket — proved
that Fernald burnt down Anwhistle Aquatics, and that Gregor died in the fire. Klaus realizes
that one half of the V.F.D. schism wanted to put out fires, while the other started them. Fernald

hints that there is a good reason for why he now has two hooks instead of hands, and that there
are few differences between the Baudelaires and Olaf. Fiona begs him to help them get back to
the Queequeg, for Sunny’s sake, and Fernald finally agrees, but asks for them to take him with
them.
Violet is firmly against Fernald’s involvement but Fiona defends him, asking if Violet would
ever abandon a sibling. So, the Baudelaires, Fiona and Fernald plot their escape, aided unwit-
tingly by Carmelita, who is doing a song and dance routine that distracts Esmé and the rowing
children. The Baudelaires return to the Queequeg, but Carmelita spots Fiona and Fernald trying
to leave. Fernald, whom Esmé calls ”Hooky”, pretends that Fiona has joined the team, and they
need to borrow Esmé’s ”tagliatelle grande” — the giant wet noodle she uses to whip the children
— to torture the Baudelaires. Esmé gives in, but changes Fiona’s name to ”Triangle Eyes” be-
cause of her glasses shape. Back on the Queequeg, Sunny is close to death. Klaus and Violet
read Fiona’s texts, and Kit’s letter, and realize that the antidote being made on Lousy Lane was
horseradish. Although they have none, they discover a surprise Sunny and Phil had made —
a birthday cake for Violet who turned fifteen without even realizing it. The balloons stood for
”Violet’s Fifteenth Date”. Violet breaks down but Sunny saves her own life when she manages to
blurt out one word, the culinary equivalent of horseradish: wasabi, which she still has from their
trip into the underwater cavern.
While Sunny recovers, Klaus and Violet are stunned when the telegram machine starts back
up again. The Voluntary Factual Dispatch they receive is from Quigley Quagmire, which touches
Violet as she remembers their romantic involvement. The letter is also sent to the mysterious
J.S. Quigley needs the Baudelaires at a certain coded location by Tuesday, the very next day
and just two days before the meeting at the Hotel. The Verse Fluctations Declarations code is
similar to the one Klaus discovered in the grotto and references poems by T.S. Eliot and Lewis
Carroll. Although they haven’t read the poems, Klaus and Violet discover the secret poetry books
that Widdershins has hidden away, which he used to read with Fernald. They also find a photo
of the family, when Fiona’s mother was alive and when Fernald had hands. Violet suggests that
answering the code and finding Widdershins are more important than freeing Fiona, who likely
might not do the same kindness to them, and Klaus reluctantly agrees. Sunny, recuperated,
joins her siblings. Klaus is first to solve the riddle, when he learns that the code in the Carroll
poem asks the Baudelaries to meet Quigley at Briny Beach. As Violet begins decoding the Eliot
poem, they are interrupted by Olaf, Esmé and Carmelita, who have found them. Olaf announces
triumphantly that they are just minutes from the Hotel Denouement and, even worse, Fiona has
joined their team. The girl herself enters, with Fernald, in the uniform of the Carmelita and tells
the Baudelaires that it is true.
Olaf triumphantly tells the Baudelaires that, once they arrive at Hotel Denouement, he will
finally have won. While he, Esmé and Carmelita search the Queequeg for things to pilfer, Violet
and Klaus attempt to reason with Fiona. They offer her the mushroom sample still inside the
helmet, which she could use to research. She is clearly tempted but Olaf returns and takes it,
overjoyed with the people he could extort and murder. Fiona is horrified. Esmé finds a ruby ring
that belonged to Fiona’s mother, whom she went to school with, and decides to keep it for herself.
Suddenly, on the radar, the mysterious question mark appears again. Olaf clearly knows what
it is, as he orders everyone to battle stations to get away from it. He tells Carmelita not to tap
dance so that the octopus submarine will not show up on ”their sonar” Fiona, knowing that she
is wrong, allows the Baudelaires free access to the Queequeg to escape. But she cannot go with
them, out of loyalty to her brother. Before she rejoins Olaf, however, she kisses Klaus. Violet
powers up the Queequeg, as Klaus navigates her out of the Carmelita. Sunny, using the chewing
gum Phil brought with him from Paltryville repairs a porthole Olaf broke, and the Queequeg is
freed from Olaf’s clutches.
As the Queequeg escapes, Lemony Snicket himself provides a few more questions: he states
that Fiona was right in her suspicions that her mother did not die in a manatee incident. He
states that Widdershins believed a certain article in the Daily Punctilio that was false, which
he showed to the Baudelaire parents, the Snicket family, and Beatrice — which was possibly
the reason Beatrice refused to marry Snicket himself. He explains that, in the darkness, the
Baudelaires could scarcely see the giant monster, which was shaped like a long eyebrow, and
which vanished back into the depths of the sea as quickly as it appeared. The children sit and
eat Violet’s cake as the long Monday night passes. When Tuesday comes, they find themselves

at Briny Beach — back where all of their troubles began. Surprisingly, from the fog, comes Mr.
Poe. He received a message from J.S. — whom he naı̈vely assumes is The Daily Punctilio reporter
Geraldine Julienne — that he had to meet them at the beach. He tells the children to come with
him to the police station to resolve all of their troubles.
Violet, however, has decoded the Eliot message, which states: ”violet” ”taxi” ”waiting” and has
concluded that a taxi will be at the beach for them. The children say goodbye to the startled
Mr. Poe and walk up the beach where they find the waiting taxi. Inside is a woman they have
never seen before. Even though the children remember being instructed not to get into cars with
strangers, they decide that taxi cab drivers are different — and as the car starts off, the driver
introduces herself as Kit Snicket, and begins driving them to the Hotel Denouement.

Summary: Various parties converge at the Hotel Denouement, where the myste-
rious ”J.S.” has called the V.F.D. together – and things aren’t always
what they seem.

The story starts with the Baudelaires in

Kit Snicket’s taxi, the situation at the
end of The Grim Grotto. A distraught
and pregnant Kit drives them to the Ho-
tel Denouement, where she leaves them
with concierge uniforms and tells them to
give her a signal that she can see in the
sky if the meeting on Thursday is can-
celed. She also says that Quigley Quag-
mire, of whom Violet is very fond, is out
at sea saving his siblings. They are also
to be wary of the managers of the Hotel,
identical brothers Frank, a volunteer, and
Ernest, a villain. The hotel is designed
like a giant library, with rooms cataloged
by the Dewey Decimal System. The Baudelaires are expected to serve and help the people of the
Hotel, as a front so they can be flâneurs, and in particular learn whether the mysterious ”J.S.”
is helping V.F.D. or its enemies.
When the Baudelaires enter the lobby from the entrance in the white fog that is emitted from
the funnel, the see a lot of things like a line at the receptionists’ desk, bellboys and bellgirls are
rolling different luggage to the elevators, waiters and waitresses were bringing food and drinks to
people who are sitting in the lobby, taxi drivers ushering their passengers in to join the line, dogs
dragging their owners out for a walk, confused tourists looking quizzically at maps, rambunctious
children were playing hide and seek amongst the potted plants, a man in a tuxedo playing tunes
on the Grand Piano for anyone who cared to listen, members of the cleaning staff were polishing
the green wooden floors, an enormous fountain in one corner of the room, and a woman standing
in the opposite corner shouting a man’s name over and over again in a crazed annoyed voice.
The Baudelaires meet either Frank or Ernest who states that they are short-handed and must
figure out the hotel system. He informs them that they are to answer to the summons of the hotel
guests. One bellboy appears telling Frank or Ernest that a taxi driver dropped off some luggage

53

where he said that the guests will not arrive until Thursday. Frank or Ernest left with the bellboy
to take care of the situation leaving the Baudelaires near a large wooden bench.
The other manager that might be Frank or Ernest appears nearby with a bunch of newspapers
where he reads the article from The Daily Punctilio about the Baudelaires being sighted in The
City. After getting the opinion of the article from the disguised Baudelaires, Frank or Ernest takes
a bellgirl to the Newstand in Room 168. After a discussion of them growing up, the Baudelaires
are encountered by either Frank or Ernest as they ask how the hotel is organized. Frank or
Ernest explains that the Hotel Denouement is organized by the Dewey decimal system similar
to the way that books are organized in many libraries where he uses Room 831 where German
poets are gathered as an example and even a description of the social sciences as well as the
bells that ring being associated with each room.
Three bells ring simultaneously, and the three orphans are forced to separate on Frank or
Ernest’s suggestion, in order to carry out various errands. Frank or Ernest leave to go talk to a
banker on the phone when told about it by a bellboy.
Violet goes up to the rooftop sunbathing salon, where she finds Esmé Squalor and Carmelita
Spats. Carmelita is patrolling the rooftop pool in a large boat, complete with sails, which was
given to her as a gift from Esmé and Olaf. Geraldine Julienne, the reporter for the The Daily
Punctilio who wrote that the Baudelaires killed Count Olaf, was also present on the rooftop sun-
bathing salon. Geraldine was interviewing Esmé about the Baudelaires. Violet overhears about a
cocktail party on Thursday. Carmelita wants her to bring a harpoon gun, which Violet gets from
Frank or Ernest. He asks her if she is who he thinks she is. Violet replies that she is a concierge
and brings the gun to Carmelita.
Klaus goes to a room for people in the sawmill industry, where he finds Sir and Charles (from
The Miserable Mill). They have him take them to the sauna, which is just down the hall. He props
the door open to listen in, and overhears them talk about a party on Thursday, and someone with
the initials of J.S. However, Frank or Ernest enters and he has Klaus hang a flypaper-like roll
of sticky paper called birdpaper outside the window, in order to catch and trap any falling birds.
He asks the same question of Klaus as Frank or Ernest asked of Violet and he gets the same
response.
Sunny goes to a room for educational people, where she sees Vice Principal Nero, Mrs. Bass
and Mr. Remora, all from The Austere Academy. Mrs. Bass has in the room several bags of money
from Mulctuary Money Management. Nero was practicing for his performance on Thursday. Both
of them ask when they are going to stop for their lunch break as Nero is surprised that Esmé
invited them to the party on Thursday. She takes them to an Indian restaurant in Room 954
which is run by Hal from The Hostile Hospital who is now wearing a turban. When Hal quoted ”I
didn’t know this was a sad occasion,” Mr. Remora quoted ”it won’t be a sad occasion if you don’t
feed us.” When she is sent to fetch a napkin by Nero, Sunny hides in the kitchen and listens to
a conversation by Hal and someone that might be Frank or Ernest, also about J.S., and then
they see her. Dewey gives her a Vernacularly Fastened Door and has her put it on the lock of a
laundry room. The laundry room has a vent through which something can fall and — if the lock
is on the door — that something will be protected.
The Baudelaires get together after a long day and try to put together their stories, and wonder
how the two managers can be in three places at once. Finally, Klaus deduces that a crow will
bring the Sugar Bowl to the Hotel; it will be shot down by the harpoon gun, fall onto the flypaper,
and the sugar bowl will fall into the laundry room vent. All of a sudden, they see a man descend-
ing form the ceiling of the Hotel from it’s clock. They think it is Ernest or Frank, but it turns out
to be their third brother Dewey Denouement, also explaining how three different identical men
talked to the Baudelaires at the same time. He is helpful and tells them that there is a duplicate
of the Hotel at the bottom of the pond, containing a catalogue of all the secrets of V.F.D, which he
has spent his entire life collecting. Then Justice Strauss and Jerome Squalor, who both believe
that they are the J.S. being contacted, arrive by taxi where they have been helping Dewey. Justice
Strauss has been communicating with the High Court on helping the Baudelaires, and Jerome
— who also felt bad about how he treated the orphans — has written a book on the matter. The
High Court justices are coming to put Count Olaf and the other evil people of V.F.D. on trial and
so — on Thursday — all of the noble people will arrive to give evidence.
Re-entering the hotel at 1:00 AM, they encounter Count Olaf who says that the Hook-Handed
Man and Fiona(of whom Klaus is very fond, due to their kiss in The Grim Grotto) stole the

Carmelita (a submarine from The Grim Grotto named after Carmelita Spats). Esmé, Carmelita,
and Hugo (who posed as the Rooftop Sunbathing Salon attendant), Colette (who posed as a pass-
ing chemist that went passed Klaus near the sauna), and Kevin (who posed as a washerwoman
in the laundry room), the three carnival freaks who joined Olaf in The Carnivorous Carnival, all
arrive. While Jerome tries to get back with Esmé to no avail as she also wants the Sugar Bowl
that Beatrice Baudelaire stole from her, Olaf also hints that the Baudelaire’s own parents were
not noble, and that they had something to do with a box of poison darts. Dewey tells Olaf of the
catalogue he has made, which prompts Esmé to comment that he must already know what is
inside the sugar bowl, and why it is so important. Olaf takes the harpoon gun from Carmelita
and threatens Dewey. The Baudelaires shield him and approach Olaf as he counts to ten. How-
ever, he is interrupted by the coughing of Arthur Poe, who has come from his room to see what
is happening. Count Olaf quickly shoves the gun into the Baudelaire’s hands. The Baudelaire’s
accidentally drop the gun to the ground. It fires.

Summary: Count Olaf’s trial takes place in the hotel’s lobby and secrets about
the past are revealed to the Baudelaire children.

Many of the awoken guests have gath-

ered in the lobby and a scene of confu-
sion follows as each one comments about
the Baudelaires:
Geraldine claims that the Baudelaire
children are no ordinary murderers.
Sir claims that they caused accidents
at the Lucky Smells Lumbermill while
Charles stated that the accidents weren’t
their fault and were the fault of Count
Olaf.
Mrs. Morrow claims that Count Olaf was the Baudelaires’ victim where they claimed that he
was ”murdered” by the Baudelaires in the Village of Fowl Devotees.
Mr. Lesko thought that the man was that was killed was ”Count Omar.” Jerome claims that
the Baudelaires aren’t murderers and found them polite and kind.
Mr. Remora claims that they are good students of his.
Vice-Principal Nero mocked what Mr. Remora said and claimed that Violet and Klaus flunked
all the tests and Sunny was the worst administrative assistant he’s ever seen.
Mrs. Bass states that they are criminals that should be punished which Hugo agreed with her
on as they are too freakish to be allowed to move freely anywhere.
Hal firmly says that the Baudelaire children are not criminals.
Esmé retorted and stated that the Baudelaire children are guilty as sin as her fingers rested
on Carmelita’s shoulder as Carmelita glares at them as they are pushed passed her by Mr. Poe.
A hotel bellboy claims that they are guiltier than that as another bellboy claimed that he
thinks that they are guiltier than the other one thinks.
A person the Baudelaire children did not recognize claims that they are nice kids while another
person claims that they are vicious criminals and another thinks that they are noble volunteers.

Mr. Poe escorts the Baudelaire children to the far corner of the lobby where Frank or Ernest
was standing next to the door that is marked 121. Justice Strauss breaks it up by saying to the
assembled people that their decision for the their guilt or innocence is not for them to decide on
as this is the matter of the High Court. As Justice Strauss states that the authorities have been
notified while the other judges from the High Court are on their way. She states that they will
begin the trial in a matter of hours. A woman in a nightgown with dancing clowns on it thought
that the trial will be on Thursday. Justice Strauss claims that showing up early is the sign of
a noble person where she and the other noble judges will decide on this matter and the other
matters once and for all. Justice Strauss did give the Baudelaire children a gentle smile while
the Baudelaires smiled back.
Jerome tells the children that they don’t have to wait until tomorrow for justice to be served
while Justice Strauss states that she trusts her fellow judges. Justice Strauss then claims that
she spoke to the managers to place them in Room 121 just to keep them safe until the trial begins.
Frank or Ernest unlocked the door which showed the closet where Violet found the harpoon gun.
The murmuring crowd then parted to reveal Count Olaf who walked towards the Baudelaires
where he claims that they should be locked up to keep treacherous people from wandering the
hotel which Colette and Kevin agreed on. Justice Strauss tells Count Olaf that he has also been
accused of a great deal of treachery and that the high court is very interested in his case as well
where Count Olaf will be locked in Room 165 until the trial begins. Count Olaf reluctantly agreed
to Justice Strauss’ suggestion as Frank or Ernest took Count Olaf’s arm and escorted him to
Room 165. As the Baudelaire children go into Room 121, Jerome and Justice Strauss gave them
a little wave and Mr. Poe gave them a cough while Frank or Ernest closed the door to Room 121.
It is early Wednesday morning when the Baudelaires go to sleep, and they wake in the af-
ternoon where they are returned to the lobby for the trial by Frank and Ernest. Due to a literal
reading of the phrase ”justice is blind”, everyone except the judges is blindfolded. Even Frank and
Ernest are blindfolded. The blindfolded people had a hard time finding their seats where even
Charles had a hard time finding Sir. Anyone who peeks will be found guilty of contempt of court.
The trial begins and Justice Strauss states that they had to the trial today instead of Thursday in
light of the death of Dewey and that the guilty parties will be handed to the authorities who are
waiting outside. Count Olaf and Esmé Squalor state that there will be a cocktail party after the
trial to which Justice Strauss states that they are out of order. Olaf gives a brief speech where
he states his innocence. The Baudelaires, however, are beginning to question their own nobility
and morality and so they answer that they are ”comparatively innocent”. Justice Strauss then
asks for people to submit evidence to the judges as the blindfolded people kept stumbling over
another:
Geraldine submits the newspaper articles.
Sir submits the employment records.
Charles submits the environmental studies.
Mr. Remora submits the grade books.
Mrs. Bass submits the blueprints of banks.
Vice-Principal Nero submits the administrative records.
Hal submits some paperwork.
Mr. Poe submits some financial records while coughing.
Mr. Lesko submits some rulebooks while Mrs. Morrow submits some constitutions.
Hugo submits some carnival posters.
Colette submits some drawings.
Kevin submits some books with both his left and right hands.
Esmé Squalor submits some ruby-encrusted blank pages.
Carmelita Spats submits a book that tells how wonderful she is.
Frank and/or Ernest submit a commonplace book.
An unknown person submits his mother.
All other unknown attendees submit various items.
Jerome Squalor submits his history of injustice where the lobby filled with a mix of applause
and hissing.
Each accused is given an opportunity to say their side of the story as Count Olaf claims
that he is innocent claiming that the evidence will prove their innocence. The Baudelaires find

58
A Series of Unfortunate Events Episode Guide

themselves having a hard time claiming their side of the story like they did with Mr. Poe and the
Quagmire triplets. Violet starts to tell their story starting at Briny Beach where they heard that
their parents have perished in the fire. When Justice Strauss stops commenting in sentences
and just commented ”Hmmmm” and the other two judges started speaking, the Baudelaires get
suspicious and had no choice to remove their blindfolds to discover that the other judges are the
Man With a Beard But No Hair and the Woman With Hair But No Beard who have been working
with Olaf. Both of them claim that the Baudelaires are guilty of contempt of court as Sunny
begs for everyone to peek. When both villains tell the crowd not to do that, the Baudelaires tell
everyone else to take off their blindfolds as they do so. Though the Man With a Beard But No
Hair and the Woman With Hair But No Beard claim that the Baudelaires are tricking them and
that Justice Strauss is enjoying saltwater taffy. While Jerome claims that they might be right,
Esmé claims that the Baudelaires are liars. While Charles, Frank or Ernest, Mr. Remora, and
Hal believe them and think they are innocent, Sir, Frank or Ernest, Vice-Principal Nero, Hugo,
Colette, Kevin, and Geraldine don’t and believe they’re guilty. Mrs. Bass claims that they are
bank robbers as Mr. Poe asks ”Who said that?” Olaf flees with the gagged Justice Strauss and
the Baudelaires chase them to the elevator.
Realizing that they need to follow Olaf, both to stop him from getting away and because there
are authorities at the door of the hotel, the Baudelaires go with him and Justice Strauss in the
elevator. He goes first to the laundry room, believing the sugar bowl to be inside. Using three clues
— a literary clue, a clue about the Baudelaire’s health (their allergy to peppermints mentioned in
The Wide Window), and a clue about his own family: interestingly enough that his parents were
killed with poison darts, suggesting the involvement of the Baudelaire parents — they break
inside. The sugar bowl is not inside. Angered, Olaf declares that he is going to the roof to get
the specimen of Medusoid Mycelium which he will spread through the hotel, killing everyone. He
will then escape in a boat which he will jump in off the roof. Violet, realizing his plan is foolish,
agrees to help. Klaus is surprised that she would do this, but Violet knows that they need a way
out as well and going with Olaf may be the only way. Then, Sunny abruptly suggests that they
burn down the Hotel and Olaf agrees.
Using some laundry sheets and Jerome Squalor’s book Odious Lusting After Finance from
Justice Strauss’ hands as kindling, Count Olaf starts a fire in the laundry room and suggest that
they leave before the fire reaches the chemicals. When it comes to getting to the roof, Count Olaf
ignores the ”In case of fire, use stairs. Do not use elevator!” sign as he summons an elevator.
Violet warns everyone on the first floor of the fire where the Man With a Beard But No Hair had
his hand on Jerome Squalor’s shoulder. As the Man With a Beard But No Hair secretly praises
Count Olaf for the fire which brings a frown to Jerome’s face, Frank or Ernest ask if Olaf is here
as the other one asks where the Baudelaires are as the Woman With Hair But No Beard directs
them towards the elevator. When Violet shouts to call the fire department as the elevator doors
started to close, they could not tell if it was Frank or Ernest that said ”Which one?” While Olaf
was angered that the Man With a Beard But No Hair and the Woman With Hair But No Beard had
failed him, the Baudelaires were unable to point out that he failed them for trying to double-cross
them.
As the elevator goes up, the Baudelaires use a trick their parents taught them and press
all of the buttons so the elevator stops on every floor. This gives them and Justice Strauss an
opportunity to warn all of the guests of the fire. However, the guests are still blindfolded from the
trial and Olaf shouts that the fire warning is fake.
Esmé Squalor and Carmelita Spats were on the second floor. They do not know who to believe
and state that they can find their own way. It is also mentioned that the Baudelaires will never
encounter Esmé or Carmelita again.
On the third floor, Mr. Poe hears Sunny’s voice as Justice Strauss tries to tell him that there
is a fire. As Mr. Poe claims that he is still in charge of the Baudelaires’ affairs, the elevator door
closes before they can finish hearing what he has to say.
Mrs. Bass was seen on the third story still wearing her blonde wig with her blindfold still
stretched over her small narrow mask as she muttered something about a getaway car.
Mr. Remora was wandering around the seventh story with Vice-Principal Nero as Mr. Remora
was wondering about fried bananas while Vice-Principal Nero worries about his violin case.
The Baudelaires saw glimpses of Geraldine Julienne using her microphone as a cane while
squealing about headlines.

59
A Series of Unfortunate Events Episode Guide

Charles and Sir are holding hands so that they won’t lose one another as the bicker over the
fact about fires being good for the lumber industry or not.
Hugo, Colette, and Kevin were holding the bird paper that Klaus hung on the outside of
the sauna. Hugo asked if the plan for the horderves is still in operation, Colette talking about
plucking off the feathers of crows, and Kevin wondering if he should hold the bird paper in his
left hand or his right hand.
Mrs. Morrow was seen arguing with Mr. Lesko.
A bearded man with a guitar was seen making friends with a woman in a crow-shaped hat as
he sings her a song.
An unidentified man calls for someone named Bruce and an unidentified woman calls for her
mother.
Other unidentified people are still wandering the halls of the hotel trying to capture anyone
who is suspicious.
The narrative does not reveal which guests believed the Baudelaires, which guests believed
Count Olaf, and which guests believed Justice Strauss. Though Lemony Snicket hints that some
of them died in the fire.
On the roof, Klaus reveals that the sugar bowl fell into the pond and not into the laundry
room. Here, Violet deduces that Sunny suggested they set the Hotel on fire as a signal so that
noble people like Kit, Hector, and the Quagmires would cancel the meeting. As Sunny says ”the
last safe place is safe no more.” Violet makes a chute for the boat to safely make it off the building
and they use the giant spatulas used for flipping sunbathers as oars. Justice Strauss attempts
to stop the Baudelaires leaving on the boat, but Sunny bites her hand and makes her let go.
The boat floats safely down to the ocean, and the Baudelaires are left ”in the same boat” as
Count Olaf, where they sail away out to sea.

Summary: The final chapter takes the orphans to a deserted island: a place of
lost lives, old stories and new beginnings. It all ends here.

The episode begins with the Baudelaire

orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sunny, and
Count Olaf trapped on a boat heading
away from the Hotel Denouement and to
the sea. The Baudelaires are forced to
listen to Count Olaf brag about how he
has triumphed, how successful he is, and
how rich he will be with his hands almost
on the Baudelaire Fortune.
After a storm, the Baudelaires are
welcomed on an The Island by a girl
named Friday Caliban, while Count Olaf
is shunned. The island facilitator, Ish-
mael, introduces the Baudelaires to the islanders and their customs and cages Olaf.
Later, the Baudelaires realize Ishmael called them the Baudelaire ”orphans” during dinner,
when they never told him their parents died. They go to Olaf, giving him ceviche (fish) for dinner
so he does not starve, and ask him if he knows anything. Olaf says he will only tell them if the
Baudelaires let them out, but the Baudelaires do the sensible thing and leave him.
The Baudelaires try to find Ishmael, but find his clay boots with footprints leading to the
other side of the island, where they discover the arboretum which is basically a junkyard of
various so-called ”dangerous” objects by Ishmael. In a tree which doubles as a small house in its
hollow trunk, they discover a book with Ishmael’s writing, as well as their mother’s handwriting.
Ishmael appears and tells them their parents once lived on the Island, he used to be the principal
of Prufrock Preparatory School, and he founded V.F.D. to make the world a quieter, safer place.
However, the schism broke out, so he wanted to live in exile on a peaceful island away from
mainstream society. He offers the Baudelaires coconut cordial before leaving.

A Series of Unfortunate Events Episode Guide

On Decision Day, a day where anyone who wants to leave the island can leave can go, the
Baudelaires try to leave. Ishmael offers them the cordial again, but the Baudelaires reveal it’s an
opiate to make the islanders be easily controlled.
Just then, two Kit Snickets appear. One Kit is Olaf in a rather pathetic disguise, the other
Kit is the real Kit, unconscious on a raft. The Baudelaires run over to the real Kit. Olaf reveals
he escaped the cage by picking Everyone can see through Olaf’s disguise, and Olaf and Ishmael
argue. Olaf reveals Ishmael’s lessons that books, poetry and learning would keep him safe did
not work. Ishmael threatens to lock Olaf again, but Olaf threatens to poison the colony with
the Medusoid Mycelium. Ishmael shoots a harpoon gun at Olaf’s belly, which is actually the
Medusoid Mycelium in a helmet.
Meanwhile, Kit regains consciousness. Kit wonders where the Medusoid Mycelium is, making
the Baudelaires realize it’s how Olaf faked his pregnant. The Baudelaires run back to Olaf, but
it’s too late, as Ishmael already fired a harpoon, poisoning the colony. The Baudelaires inform
everyone that horseradish is the only known cure. Ishmael and the islanders flee using their
Decision Day outrigger to go to a horseradish factory not too far away, leaving the Baudelaires
and Olaf behind (Ishmael does not want to take the Baudelaires for causing their recent troubles),
as well as Kit.
The Baudelaires ask Kit what’s in the Sugar Bowl, and she reveals it’s a V.F.D.-developed
sugar hybrid which can acts as both cure and immunizer to the poison. They also tell her Dewey
is dead. The Baudelaires run to the arboretum in hopes of finding a cure, but find nothing.
They almost die, but the Incredibly Deadly Viper appears and saves them with an apple, which
contains horseradish in it.
The Baudelaires run to Kit and offer an apple to her, but she refuses to take it because it could
harm the baby. The tide begins to rise and they realize they need to bring Kit to the shore so she
doesn’t wash away. Because the Baudelaires are too weak from the poison, they seek extra help
from Olaf. They offer him an apple, but he refuses, preferring to die because he lost too much
to go on. In their conversation, the Baudelaires accuse him of killing their parents, but he only
replies, ”Is that what you think?” Kit moans in pain and they tell him Kit is in danger and might
die, causing him to bite it and he carries her to the shore. Olaf kisses Kit before he dies from his
wound, while Kit goes into labor.
The Baudelaires help Kit deliver her baby which turns out to be a girl. While resting at night,
Kit decides to name the baby after the mother of the Baudelaires, Beatrice. Kit violently coughs,
saying that she is too infected for the apple to work. She hands her baby to the Baudelaires,
asking them to protect the baby, then dies. The Baudelaires bury Kit and Olaf, and decide to
read the book their parents wrote in, titled ”An Incomplete History”.
The episode ends with a short epilogue called ”Chapter Fourteen” in which, one year later,
Kit’s baby and the Baudelaires sail away from the island on the boat they arrived in. They realize
it was originally called The Beatrice.
Unlike the book, this Chapter Fourteen shows the fates of Count Olaf’s original troupe, Fer-
nald and Fiona, the Quagmire triplets, the people on the island who sailed away, various other
characters, and Beatrice II.
