1) Find the maximum/minimum of the the following function:

f(x,y)=9-2x+4y-4x2-6y2
Solution

First find df(x,y)/dx and df(x,y)/dy as follows

df(x,y)/dx=-2-8x and df(x,y)/dy=4-12y

Then set df(x,y)/dx=0 and df(x,y)/dy=0 as follows

-2-8x=0 implies x=-0.25

4-12y=0 implies y=0.25

Then find the second partial derivatives:

d2f(x,y)/dx2=-8<0 and d2f(x,y)/dy2=-12<0

Then the maximum occurs at (x=-0.25,y=0.25) and the maximum is

f(-0.25,0.25)=9-2(-0.25)+4(0.25)-4(-0.25)2-6(-0.25)2

First find df(x,y)/dx and df(x,y)/dy as follows

df(x,y)/dx=4x+4y-14 and df(x,y)/dy=4x+10y-24

Then set df(x,y)/dx=0 and df(x,y)/dy=0 as follows

4x+4y-14=0 implies x=11/6

4x+10y-24=0 implies y=5/3

Then find the second partial derivatives:

d2f(x,y)/dx2=4>0 and d2f(x,y)/dy2=10>0

Then the minimum occurs at (x=11/6,y=5/3) and the maximum is
