Tutorial 5: Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

1. Research has shown that in the fast-paced world of electronics, the key factor that
separates the winners from the losers is actually how slow a firm is in making
decisions: The most successful firms take longer to arrive at strategic decisions
on product development, adopting new technologies, or developing new products.
The summary of the number of months to arrive at a decision for firms ranked
high, medium, and low in terms of performance are shown below.
SUMMARY
Groups Count Sum Average Variance
High 15 90.3 6.02 4.763143
Medium 14 69 4.928571 3.456044
Low 14 35.8 2.557143 2.491868

a. Complete the ANOVA table.

b. Assumed that populations have equal variances and are normally distributed,
is there evidence of a different in the average decision making time among the
firms with various performance at the 5% significance level?

2. The chemists from a local pharmaceutical manufacturer have been researching

new formulas to provide quicker relief of minor pains. They have produced three
different formulas, which they wanted to test. Fifteen people who complained of
minor pains were recruited for an experiment. Each was asked to take the
medicine and report the length of time until some relief was felt. The results have
been collected and analysed as below.

(i) Complete the ANOVA table given above.

(ii) Test at the 5% significance level to check whether there is significant
difference in the time of relief exist among the three formulas.

3. A pharmaceutical manufacturer has been researching new medications formulas

to provide quicker relief of arthritis pain. Their laboratories have produced three
different medications and they want to determine if the different medications
produce different responses. Eighteen people who complained of arthritis pains
were recruited for an experiment; six were randomly assigned to each medication.
Each person was asked to take the medicine and report the length of time until
some relief was felt (minutes). The summary of the results are shown below.
(Assume normal distributions with equal variances.)

i. Complete the ANOVA table.

ii. Do these data provide sufficient evidence to indicate that differences in the
average time of relief exist among the three medications? Use  = 0.10.

4. Management of the refrigerator space in a grocery store requires knowledge of the

average amount of items sold. The store manager wishes to determine whether to
allocate the same shelf space for the three flavors of yogurt that sold, which are
apple, peach, and lemon. The sales data for each flavour has been recorded during
the selected five randomly weeks.

(i) What is your conclusion if the level of significance is 0.05?
(ii) What is your conclusion if the level of significance changes to 0.01?
