Youniversity Ventures. It is a shopping website that helps people find products in stores near their homes.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, c, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
You can usually tell when your friends are happy or angry by the looks on their faces or by their actions.
This is useful because reading their emotional expressions helps you to know how to respond to them.
Emotions have evolved to help us respond to important situations and to convey our intentions to others. But
does raising the eyebrows and rounding the mouth say the same thing in Minneapolis as it does in Madagascar?
Much research on emotional expressions has centered on such questions.
According to Paul Ekman, the leading researcher in this area, people speak and understand substantially
the same “facial language”. Studies by Ekman’s group have demonstrated that humans share a set of universal
emotional expressions that testify to the common biological heritage of the human species. Smiles, for example,
signal happiness and frowns indicate sadness on the faces of people in such far- flung places as Argentina,
Japan, Spain, Hungary, Poland, Sumatra, the United States, Vietnam, the jungles of New Guinea, and the
Eskimo villages north of Artic Circle. Ekman and his colleagues claim that people everywhere can recognize at
least seven basic emotions: sadness, fear, anger, disgust, contempt, happiness, and surprise. There are, however,
huge differences across cultures in both the context and intensity of emotional displays - the so called display
rules. In many Asian cultures, for example, children are taught to control emotional responses - especially
negative ones- while many American children are encouraged to express their feelings more openly. Regardless
of culture, however, emotions usually show themselves, to some degree, in people’s behavior. From their first
days of life, babies produce facial expressions that communicate their feelings.
The ability to read facial expressions develops early, too. Very young children pay close attention to
facial expressions, and by age five, they nearly equal adults in their skill at reading emotions on people’s faces.
This evidence all points to a biological underpinning for our abilities to express and interpret a basic set of
human emotions. Moreover, as Charles Darwin pointed out over a century ago, some emotional expressions
seem to appear across species boundaries. Cross - cultural psychologists tell us that certain emotional responses
carry different meanings in different cultures. For example, what emotion do you suppose might be conveyed
by sticking out your tongue? For Americans, this might indicate disgust, while in China it can signify surprise.
Likewise, a grin on an American face may indicate joy, while on a Japanese face it may just as easily mean
embarrassment. Clearly, culture influences emotional expressions.

Marcel Bich, a French manufacturer of traditional ink pens, was the man turning the ballpoint pen into an item
that today almost anyone can afford. Bich was shocked at the poor quality of theballpoint pens that were
available, and also at their high cost. However, he recognised that the ballpoint was a firmly established
invention, and he decided to design a cheap pen that worked well and would be commercially successful.
Bich went to the Biro brothers and asked them if he could use the design of their original invention in one of
his own pens. In return, he offered to pay them every time he sold a pen. Then, for two years, Bich studied the
detailed construction of every ballpoint pen that was being sold, often working with a microscope.
By 1950, he was ready to introduce his new wonder: a plastic pen with a clear barrel that wrote smoothly, did
not leak and only cost a few cents. He called it the ‘Bic Cristal’. The ballpoint pen had finally become a
practical writing instrument. The public liked it immediately, and today it is as common as the pencil. In
Britain, they are still called Biros, and many Bic models also say ‘Biro’ on the side of the pen, to remind people
of their original inventors.
Bich became extremely wealthy thanks to his invention, which had worldwide appeal. Over the next 60 years
his company, Societe Bic, opened factories all over the world and expanded its range of inexpensive products.
Today, Bic is as famous for its lighters and razors as it is for its pens, and you can even buy a Bic mobile
phone.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
A study was set up to examine the old marriage advice about whether it’s more important to be happy or to be
right. Couples therapists sometimes suggest that in an attempt to avoid constant arguments, spouses weigh up
whether pressing the point is worth the misery of marital discord. The researchers from the University of
Auckland noticed that many of their patients were adding stress to their lives by insisting on being right, even
when it worked against their well-being.
The researchers then found a couple who were willing to record their quality of life on a scale of 1 to 10. They
told the man, who wanted to be happy more than right, about the purpose of the study and asked him to agree
with every opinion and request his wife had without complaint, even when he profoundly didn’t agree. The
wife was not informed of the purpose of the study and just
asked to record her quality of life.
Things went rapidly downhill for the couple. The man’s quality-of-life scores fell, from 7 to 3, over the course
of the experiment. The wife’s scores rose modestly, from 8 to 8.5, before she became hostile to the idea of
recording the scores. Rather than creating harmony, the husband’s agreeableness led to the wife becoming
increasingly critical of what he did and said (in the husband’s opinion). After 12 days he broke down, and the
study was called off because of “severe adverse outcomes.”
The researchers concluded, shockingly, that humans need to be right and acknowledged as right, at least some
of the time, to be happy. They also noted this was further proof that if given too much power, humans tend to
“assume the alpha position and, as with chimpanzees, they become very aggressive and dangerous.” It is often
said that there can be no peace without justice, and that’s true of domestic sphere.
Obviously the results are to be taken with extreme caution, since this was just one couple with who-knows-
what underlying issues beforehand. But the study’s chief author, Dr. Bruce Arroll, maintains that the question
of happiness vs. rightness, theoretically, could be settled by scientific inquiry with a wider sample. “This would
include a randomized controlled trial,” he says. “However, we would be reluctant to do the definitive study
because of the concern about divorce.”

Satoru Iwata was made the CEO of Nintendo in 2002. At that time, the video game market was
suffering, and Nintendo was having trouble with its sales. Iwata thought that a change in strategy was due.
Previously, the strategy in the game industry was to keep making the same kinds of games and consoles but just
improve their power and complexity. However, Iwata didn’t just want to attract dedicated gamers. He wanted to
bring in new kinds of players to video gaming. How was he going to do that? He decided to change the very
concept of video games.
Iwata wanted to make video games easier to pick up and more relevant to peoples lives. Out of this idea
came the Nintendo DS. People interacted more directly with the game by using a touch screen instead of just a
set of buttons. Iwata took this idea to the extreme with the motion-based Wii. Now, just by using natural body
movements, players can enjoy playing all sorts of games.
The kinds of games produced changed as well. Along with the regular role-playing game (RPG), action,
and sport games, new kinds of “games” were designed. Some of these new games, like Brain Age, improved
thinking abilities. Others, like Wii Fit, improved fitness. This has brought in a new age of gaming. Everyone
from grandparents to their grandchildren seems to be playing Nintendo products. With all that we have seen so
far, we can only wonder what is next for Iwata. Surely it will be something groundbreaking.

There are many mistakes that people make when writing their resume (CV) or completing a job
application. Here are some of the most common and most serious.
The biggest problem is perhaps listing the duties for which you were responsible in a past position, all
this tells your potential employers is what you were supposed to do. They do not necessarily know the specific
skills you used in executing them, nor do they know what results you achieved - both of which are essential. In
short, they won’t know if you were the best, the worst or just average in your position.
The more concrete information you can include, the better. As far as possible, provide measurements of
what you accomplished. If any innovations you introduced saved the organization money, how much did they
save? If you found a way of increasing productivity, by what percentage did you increase it?
Writing what you are trying to achieve in life - your objective - is a waste of space. It tells the employer
what you are interested in. Do you really think that employers care what you want? No, they are interested in
what they want! Instead, use that space for a career summary. A good one is brief - three to four sentences long.
A good one will make the person reviewing your application want to read further.
Many resumes list “hard” job-specific skills, almost to the exclusion of transferable, or “soft”, skills.
However, your ability to negotiate effectively, for example, can be just as important as your technical skills.
All information you give should be relevant, so carefully consider the job for which you are applying. If
you are applying for a job that is somewhat different than your current job, it is up to you to draw a connection
for the resume reviewer, so that they will understand how your skills will fit in their organization. The person
who reviews your paperwork will not be a mind reader.
If you are modest about the skills you can offer, or the results you have achieved, a resume reader may
take what you write literally, and be left with a low opinion of your ability, you need to say exactly how good
you are. On the other hand, of course, never stretch the truth or lie.
Question 44. What topic does the passage mainly discuss?

The Earth's Energy Budget
The way the Earth interacts (26) the sun's energy can be displayed in a
diagram called the Earth’s energy budget. It displays the sun's energy that reaches us and how
much of that energy absorbed and reflected is by the earth and its atmosphere. Solar energy reaches
earth as electromagnetic radiation. Once the energy reaches earth, some of it is absorbed by the
atmosphere, (27) _ clouds.
Some of it makes it to the earth's surface, and is absorbed by land and oceans. The (28) of
energy absorbed affects temperature. The energy (29) is not
absorbed by the earth or its atmosphere is reflected back out to space in the same wavelengths in
which it came to earth. On average, the amount of energy coming in is equal to the amount of
energy going out. Therefore, we say the earth's energy budget is balanced. (30) more energy
was coming in than was going out, the earth's temperature would increase. On the other hand, if too
much energy is reflected, and not absorbed, we'll see a decrease in the earth's temperatures. Of all of
the sun's energy that hits the Earth, about 70% is absorbed by the land, ocean, atmosphere and
clouds and about 30% is reflected back into space.

Today’s cars are smaller, safer, cleaner and more economical than their predecessors but the car of
the future will be far more pollution –free than those on road today. Several new types of
automobile engines have already been developed than run on alternative sources of power, such as
electricity, compressed natural gas, methanol, steam, hydrogen and propane. Electricity, however,
is the only zero-emission option presently available.
Although electric vehicles will not be truly practical until a powerful, compact battery or other
dependable source of current is available, transport experts foresee a new assortment of electric
vehicles entering everyday life: shorter-range commuter electric cars, three-wheeled neighborhood
cars, electric delivery vans, bikes and trolleys.
As automakers work to develop practical vehicles, urban planners and utility engineers are
focusing on infrastructure systems to support and make the best use of the new cars. Public
charging facilities will need to be as common as today’s gas stations. Public parking spots on the
street or in commercial lots will need to be equipped with devices that allow drivers to charge their
batteries while they stop, dine or attend a concert. To encourage the use of electric vehicles, the
most convenient parking in transportation centres might be reserved for electric cars.
Planners foresee electric shuttle buses, trains, buses and neighborhood vehicles all meeting at
transit centres that would have facilities for charging and renting. Commuters will be able to rent a
variety of electric cars to suit their needs: light trucks, one-person three-wheelers, small cars or
electric gasoline hybrid cars for longer trips, which will no doubt take place on automated
freeways capable of handling five times the number of vehicles that can be carried by freeway
today.

Vietnam’s population is ageing quickly. In 2017, more than 10 per cent of the population will be 60 and
older, and in 15-20 years the elderly will account for one third of the total population. This raises concerns
about healthcare, welfare and pensions for the elderly at a time when Vietnam is focusing on economic
integration and requires a large labor force. So far two solutions have been proposed: to loosen the two-child
policy and to increase the retirement age to 58 for women and 62 for men. By ending the two-child policy the
government expects to make up for the ageing population within the next 20 years. But its effect could be
creating an uncontrollable boom in the Vietnamese population. When the government loosened the two-child
policy in 2015 in a trial period, in the first 6 months of 2016 the third child birth rate increased remarkably by
7.5 per cent
Raising the retirement age has been proposed by the Ministry of Labor pending parliamentary evaluation
in May 2017. While the policy is beneficial in utilizing the work experience of the elderly while creating
savings in the pension budget, it also means fewer job prospects and promotion opportunities for younger
generations. It is also not in the interest of all the elderly, especially the 70 per cent of Vietnam's labor force
working in manual labor-intensive sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and construction where working
above the age of 50 can be dangerous and unproductive. Despite these drawbacks, raising the retirement age is
still considered by policymakers as one of the key solutions to the ageing population problem in Vietnam.
However, these are only temporary solutions.
Question 39: The best title for this passage could be ________.
A. Vietnam struggling with ageing population B. Stopping the two-child policy in Vietnam
C. Raising the retirement age in Vietnam D. How to solve the aging population in Vietnam

A. In 2017, the elderly take up for one third of the total population, this leads to more concerns about
healthcare, welfare and pensions for the elderly.
B. In 2015, the two-child policy has been officially tightened and succeeded.
C. The government would promote families to have two children to compensate for the ageing population
within the next 20 years.
D. In the next 15-17 years, Vietnam's economy will need a large labor force to integrate with global
economy.
Question 41: The word “its" in paragraph 1 refers to ________?
A. two-Child policy B. aging population C. retirement age D. economic integration

Volunteering offers many of the same social benefits, with the added bonus of helping others and
developing useful skills to put on your CV. Plus, students are in a unique position to help, suggests Tom Fox.
"They can take their enthusiasm and excitement for opportunities and share their passions, subject knowledge
and experience with people." The idea of giving up time for nothing might seem impractical at first, especially
once the pressures of study and coursework or exams begin to mount up. However, Michelle Wright, CEO of
charity support organization Cause4, suggests seeing volunteering as a two-way street. "I think it is fine for
undergraduates to approach volunteering as a symbiotic relationship where doing good is just one part of the
motivation for reaching personal and professional goals."
Katerina Rudiger, head of skills and policy campaigns at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and
Development (CIPD), says: "Volunteering can be a valuable way of gaining that experience, as well as
building confidence, broadening your horizons, becoming a better team player and developing those all-
important 'employ ability skills' such as communication and decision making." Amanda Haig, graduate HR
manager, agrees that volunteering can help your employment prospects. "Volunteering can demonstrate
positive personality traits and skill sets, such as proactivity, and teamwork," she says.
A positive side-effect of volunteering is improving your time at university by getting involved in the
local community. Leaving the student bubble can make your time as an undergraduate much more varied. At
Bath Spa University, more than 1,000 students volunteered over the past year, doing everything from working
on local environmental projects to helping in schools or assisting the elderly. ”Quite often there can be a divide
between students and permanent residents," says students' union president Amy Dawson, "but if students
invest a little time now, they will be giving something back to the local community and will reap the benefits
in the future."
“You might also find that volunteering helps your studies if you choose the right program. At Lancaster,
volunteering is linked into academic modules in some cases", explains Fox. "This has multiple wins. Students
get to apply their learning in the classroom and share their interests with children in local schools or
community organizations, while schools gain skilled students with a passion for a subject that enthuses their
pupils."

Successful students often do the followings while studying. First, they have an overview before reading.
Next, they look for important information and pay greater attention to it (which often needs jumping forward or
backward to process information). They also relate important points to one another. Also, they activate and use
their prior knowledge. When they realize that their understanding is not good, they do not wait to change
strategies. Last, they can monitor understanding and take action to correct or “fix up” mistakes in
comprehension.
Conversely, students with low academic achievement often demonstrate ineffective study skills. They
tend to assume a passive role, in learning and rely on others (e.g., teachers, parents) to monitor their studying,
for example, low-achieving students often do not monitor their understanding of content; they may not be
aware of the purpose of studying; and they show little evidence of looking back, or employing “fix-up”
strategies to fix understanding problems. Students who struggle with learning new information seem to be
unaware that they must extent effort beyond simply reading the content to understand and remember it.
Children with learning disabilities do not plan and judge the quality of their studying. Their studying may
be disorganized. Students with learning problems face challenges with personal organization as well. They
often have difficulty keeping track of materials and assignments, following directions, and completing work on
time. Unlike good studiers who employ a variety of study skills in a flexible yet purposeful manner, low-
achieving students use a restricted range of study skills. They cannot explain why good study strategies are
important for learning; and they tend to use the same, often ineffective study approach for all learning tasks,
ignoring task content, structure or difficulty.

Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
We get great pleasure from reading. The more advanced a man is, the greater delight he will find in
reading. The ordinary man may think that subjects like philosophy or science are very difficult and that if
philosophers and scientists read these subjects, it is not for pleasure.
But this is not true. The mathematician finds the same pleasure in his mathematics as the school boy in an
adventure story. For both, it is a play of the imagination, a mental recreation and exercise. The
leasure derived from this activity is common to all kinds of reading. But different types of books give us
different types of pleasure. First in order of popularity is novel-reading. Novels contain pictures of imaginary
people in imaginary situations, and give us an opportunity of escaping into a new world very much like our
world and yet different from it. Here we seem to live a new life, and the experience of this new life gives us a
thrill of pleasure. Next in order of popularity are travel books, biographies and memoirs. These tell us tales of
places we have not seen and of great men in whom we are interested.
Some of these books are as wonderful as novels, and they have an added value that they are true. Such
books give us knowledge, and we also find immense pleasure in knowing details of lands we have not seen and
of great men we have only heard of. Reading is one of the greatest enjoyments of life. To book-lovers, nothing
is more fascinating than a favorite book. And, the ordinary educated man who is interested and absorbed in his
daily occupation wants to occasionally escape from his drudgery into the wonderland of books for recreation
and refreshment.

Ostriches
Ostriches are the largest and heaviest birds on earth. They can grow to be as tall as 9 feet and can weigh
as much as 250 pounds. Even though they have wings, they cannot fly. Instead, ostriches have long, powerful
legs that help them to run very fast when they feel threatened. Ostriches use their wings to move themselves
forward and to help them change direction.
Ostriches are native to Africa, where they still live in desert areas and dry, open grasslands called
savannahs. Ostriches can also be found in zoos all over the world. Humans have domesticated ostriches, so now
ostriches live on farms in over a dozen countries, including the United States, China, India, Japan, Brazil and
Costa Rica. They are raised for their meat, skin, and feathers.
Ostriches like to live in small groups called herds. The male ostrich is called a rooster; the female, a hen.
Baby ostriches are called chicks. The female ostrich lays the eggs, but both the male and the female take turns

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the answer to each of the question.
The green building movement, started in the 1970s as a way to reduce environmental destruction, is
changing the way buildings are constructed. In the early years, green builders were a small minority, and their
goals of reducing the environmental impact of buildings were considered unrealistic. Now, however, the
movement is growing, as builders have been able to take advantage of new technology.
Green builders try to make use of recycled materials, which means less waste in dumps. Also, they reduce
environmental impact by reducing the energy requirements of a building. One way is to provide an alternative,
non-polluting source of energy. First, with solar panels, it is possible to produce electricity from the rays of the
sun. Once installed, they provide energy at no they cost and with no pollution.
Another solution is to reduce the amount of energy required in a building. It is possible to cut electricity
use noticeably by improving natural lighting and installing low-energy light bulbs. To reduce the amount of
fuel needed for heating or cooling, builders also add insulation to the walls so that the building stays warmer in
winter and cooler in summer.
One example of this advanced design is the Genzyme Center of Cambridge, the most environmentally
responsible office building in America. Every aspect of the design and building had to consider two things: the
need for a safe and pleasant workplace for employees and the need to lessen the negative environmental impact.
75 percent of the building materials were recycled materials, and the energy use has been reduced by 43 percent
and water use by 32 percent, compared with other buildings of the same size.
In other parts of the world, several large-scale projects have recently been developed according to green
building principles. One of these is in Vauban, Germany, in an area that was once the site of army housing. The
site has been completely rebuilt with houses requiring 30 percent less energy than conventional ones. These
houses, heated by special non-polluting systems, are also equipped with solar panels.
A larger project is under way in China. The first phase of this project will include houses for 400 families
built with solar power, non-polluting bricks, and recycled wall insulation. In a second phase, entire
neighborhoods in six cities will be built. If all goes well, the Chinese government plans to copy these ideas in
new neighborhoods across China.
Green building ideas, on a small or large scale, are spreading. Individuals, companies, and governments
are beginning to see their benefits. Not only are they environmentally friendly, green buildings improve living
and working conditions and also save money in the long run.

Australians place a high value on independence and personal choice. This means that a teacher or
course tutor will not tell students what to do, but will give them a number of options and suggest they work out
which one is the best in their circumstances. It also means that they are expected to take action if something
goes wrong and seek out resources and support for themselves.
Australians are also prepared to accept a range of opinions rather than believing there is one truth.
This means that in an educational setting, students will be expected to form their own opinions and defend the
reasons for that point of view and the evidence for it.
Australians are uncomfortable with differences in status and hence idealise the idea of treating
everyone equally. An illustration of this is that most adult Australians call each other by their first names. This
concern with equality means that Australians are uncomfortable taking anything too seriously and are even
ready to joke about themselves.
Australians believe that life should have a balance between work and leisure time. As a consequence,
some students may be critical of others who they perceive as doing nothing but study. Australian notions of
privacy mean that areas such as financial matters, appearance and relationships are only discussed with close
friends. While people may volunteer such information, they may resent someone actually asking them unless
the friendship is firmly established. Even then, it is considered very impolite to ask someone what they earn.

There have been many famous detectives in literature. But one of the first-and certainly the most
famous is Sherlock Holmes. Holmes was created by the British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the late
nineteenth century.
Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in the work A Study in Scarlet, which was published in
1887. Holmes instantly became a popular literary figure with the general populace, who demanded that Doyle
write more stories involving him. Doyle compiled and eventually wound up writing fifty-six short stories and
four novels that featured Holmes. While he took a break of several years from creating stories about Holmes,
Doyle continued to write Holmes stories until 1927. Among the most famous of all the works featuring Holmes
are The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Blue Carbuncle, and A Scandal in Bohemia
One of the reasons that Sherlock Holmes was so popular concerns the method he employs to solve his
cases: logic. Together with his partner, Dr. Watson, Holmes uses his powers of observation to detect clues that
can help him solve the cases he accepts. Holmes has an incredibly sharp mind that enables him to determine
who the guilty party is or what the problem is. Holmes also is a master of disguise, which he proves many
times, and he is skilled at boxing as well as sword fighting.
While Holmes often solves cases that are unrelated to one another, he has a nemesis with whom he
comes into both direct and indirect conflict in several stories. That person is Professor Moriarty, the leader of a
crime ring in London. In one of the stories, The Final Problem, Holmes and Moriarty fight one another and fall
to their deaths by plunging down a steep cliff near a waterfall. When he wrote that story, Doyle had tired of
Holmes and wanted to kill off the character. He then refrained from writing about Holmes for many years but
public demand for more detective stories induced him to bring Holmes back from the dead and to continue
writing.
