Objectives of the Course

1. Explain environment science and its allied problems.

2. Acquaintance of the norms of environmental protection and conservation.

3. Explain the need for environmental awareness.

4. Impart tools of environmental study.

UNIT I Introduction to Environmental Sciences, Ecosystem and Climate Change:


(Total Topics -8 and Hrs.- 10):

Environment Science- Definition, scope, and importance (the multidisciplinary nature of


Environmental Sciences), Components of Environment (Atmosphere, Lithosphere, and
Hydrosphere, Biosphere); Environmental Communication and public awareness;
Environmental Ethics: Role of Indian and other religions and cultures in environmental
conservation; Ecosystem- Definition, Structure and functions of an ecosystem, Energy flow,
Food chain, Food web, Ecological succession; Case studies (Forest ecosystem, Grassland
ecosystem, Desert ecosystem, Aquatic ecosystem (pond, streams, lakes, rivers, ocean,
estuaries); Concept of sustainability and sustainable development
UNIT II Natural Resources (Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources): (Total Topics
- 7 and Hrs.- 10):

Land Resources and land-use change; Land degradation, Soil erosion, and Desertification;
Deforestation: Causes and impacts due to mining, Impact of dam building on the
environment, forests, biodiversity, and tribal population; Water: use and over-exploitation of
surface and groundwater, floods, drought; Conflicts over water (international & inter-state);
Heating of earth and circulation of air; air mass formation and precipitation; Energy
resources: Renewable and non-renewable energy sources, Use of alternate energy sources,
Growing energy needs, Case studies.

UNIT III (Total Topics - 5 and Hrs.-10): Environmental Pollution, Disasters and
Human Communities and the Environment

Environmental Pollution- Types, causes, effects, and control; Air, water, soil, chemical and
noise pollution; Nuclear hazards and human health risks; Solid waste management: control
measures of urban and industrial waste; Pollution case studies; Climate change, Global
warming, Ozone layer depletion, acid rain and impacts on human communities and
agriculture. Disaster management: floods, earthquakes, cyclones, and landslides;
Environmental movements: Chipko, Silent Valley, Bishnoi’s of Rajasthan; Human population
