Professors at Bloomington University must follow strict guidelines when it comes to planning and
delivering course material. This is an example of low autonomy.
Types of Commitment
Low continuance commitment Chen said, “To be honest, I am completely strapped with student
loans. If another company with higher pay offered me a job, I’d
probably take it.”
Low normative commitment Hakeem said, “To be honest, I don’t really feel any obligation to
stay here. It’s a small company so I’ve generally trained myself.”
Low affective commitment Laura said, “Although there are things I like about working here, I
don’t really feel emotionally attached. I mean I wouldn’t be
devastated if I left or anything…”
High continuance commitment Maria said, “I know I’ve only been here for two years, but I’ve
worked really hard. I’m pretty sure I have a shot at managing the
new territory when Tom decides to expand—and that represents a
pretty nice promotion. I am not sure I can get that anywhere else.”
High affective commitment Amar said, “I love the laid-back atmosphere here! I can come to
work in jeans and work on my timeline. It really makes me feel at
home!”
High normative commitment Kenneth said, “I’ve been with College Ads, Inc. since I graduated
from college. They were the only place that was willing to give
me a job. I can’t leave now!”
