1. What do you think of this song (on a scale 1-10)? How has it made you feel? Say why.
Had you ever listened to it before or is this the first time?
I really like this song, I had heard it a long time ago since it became very well-known
and it is a quite famous song; however, it had been a long time since I had heard it and I
just remembered how much I liked it, personally it is a 10/10. I love the voices of both
singers, the piano, the lyrics... I think it's a beautiful song that, sometimes, makes me
feel melancholic for some reason.
2. What do you think I'M GIVING UP ON YOU means? Why was this phrase (SAY
SOMETHING +) chosen as the song title? What is it that the song wants us to say?
What inspires you this song? Have you ever given up on someone? Because
I think the term "I'm giving up on you" refers to when you have to let someone go for
various reasons even though you love them. I think the song is dedicated to those
people who leave your life even though it's hard for you to accept it or you don't really
want them to leave, but you know it's what has to happen. That "something" that the
song talks about, from my point of view, is what you hope the other person will say to
tell you that they will continue being in your life; I mean, once you have accepted that
the other person is going to leave, deep down, you wait for them to say that "something"
that tells you that they are staying or that makes you think that you shouldn't cut them
out of your life. Personally, I have never had to give up on anyone in my life that I can
remember, but I understand that it is a very difficult thing to do.
3. Two of the hardest and toughest lines could be “I’m sorry that I couldn’t get to you” and
“And I will swallow my pride, you’re the one that I love, and I’m saying goodbye”. What
do they mean within the context of the song?
“I'm sorry I couldn't get to you" means that the person regret not having been able to
make the other person stay, for me, it shows a feeling of sadness because, despite
having tried everything, they have not managed to get everything working well and that
is why they should be separated.
“I'll swallow my pride, you're the one I love and I'm saying goodbye." The person who
says goodbye says that will swallow her pride, perhaps after having tried to make things
work but seeing that they were not going well and since it’s someone loved, they must
say goodbye because they know it is the best thing they can do at that moment.
4. In the VIDEO you can see and feel the following “human relationships”. Watch them
and describe the scenes briefly. Write what they talk about (your interpretation)
and how they relate to the song title:
 A young couple on their bed: this situation may be the one that first comes to mind
while listening to the song. This is a couple who have probably not being good time for
a long time and who have reached a point where they are hurting each other more
than giving them happiness. For this reason, the girl believes that they should let each
other go at that point, even though she hopes that the boy will tell her that "something"
that will make her turn around and think that they should stay together because she
still loves him.
 A little girl in and under her bed + her parent: from my point of view, the girl is going
through a bad time due to her parents' constant fights. She loves both of them very
much and can't stand the situation, so she tries to hide when it happens. She hopes
that someone, especially her parents, will tell her that "something" that gives her
hope that everything will be okay and that soon they will be a happy family again
where there is no shouting or fighting.
 An old couple in a hospital room: this situation is especially hard since it seems like an
old couple who have been together their entire lives and who have loved each other
since they were young. Sadly, the woman gets ill and the chances of her surviving are
quite low. However, the man hasn’t lost hope yet, because he doesn’t want to believe
that he is going to lose the love of his life. Anyway, he is aware of reality and knows
that sooner or later the time will come so he begins to give up.
5. Why do you think the teacher has chosen this song as the final task of this course?
This song invites you to think about possible situations that could occur in your life, so
I think it is a very good option if you want your students to consider some topics.
