B. Introduction choose the most effective approach or technique to get your message
across. In this lesson, we will explore techniques to help you apply
them in informative, persuasive, and argumentative writing.
C. Development
Collaborative
Approach
You learned that argumentative writing aims to change the reader’s mind by
convincing him or her to agree with your point of view or consider your stand or
argument on an issue. The main argument presented is elaborated and explained
through the presentation of its pros (in favor of) and cons (against) of your position
in an issue or topic. It begins with an introduction and ends with a conclusion. In
between are the body paragraphs where you must do three things: support your
opinion, present the opposing point of view, and tell why that viewpoint is wrong.
When you write an argument, you are trying to convince your reader that your
opinion is correct. A strong argument has five (5) key parts
Learning Task 1
Below is a mixed-up informative text. Arrange it in a way that shows the
structure (I+MID+C) of the ideas with topic, details, and big idea.
How to Travel Solo Successfully
· The first way to travel solo successfully is to arrive well-informed on the area.
· Use money belt as a purse not for storage. Keep your passport, extra stores of
money, and other documents in a theft-resistant bag.
· Freya Stark once said, “To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the most
pleasant sensations in the world.”
· It may pose perils here and there but a little preparation and common sense can
get you through the rough spots
· In terms of fun, pack for your lack of companionship. Bring a blank journal to
record your adventures. Pack a paperback to enjoy while you wait out a
rainstorm in a coffee shop.
· As solo travel can be the ultimate in self-indulgence, learning how to do it is
each one’s innate ability, and something that can be learned today.
· Traveling alone is an achievable feat.
· You will be surprised that you absorb new surroundings, make new
acquaintances, and encounter self- discovery.
· Also, in line with safety, you must have to carry good identification in more than
one place.
· Your security is at risk when you are trapped in a busy street scanning frequently
the GPS on your phone while looking for a place to eat or stay. It also matters
if you booked for your accommodation in advance and are in the know of
public transport system
Learning Task 2
Persuasive writing states and supports an opinion. Based on the given
statements, write your own persuasive text using the structure (I+3BR+C).
Some people think recesses in school should be longer. They believe kids might
learn better if they had a longer break in the middle of the day. However, the extra
class time after recess would make the school day longer. Therefore, kids would
get out of school later in the day. What do you think? Support your opinion with
persuasive writing.
Learning Task 3
Write an essay arguing for or against the topic, “Young people nowadays
should decide to take a gap year before they start university.” Consider the following:
· Outline the value of education.
· Decide whether one decision is more beneficial than the other
· Suggest how the issue should be treated in the future.
· Develop a five- paragraph argumentative essay of 100-200 words. Be guided
by the following outline/structure: (I-C/T + B-PCR + C)
E. Assimilation Instructions: Read the statements carefully. On your paper, write AGREE if the
Constructivist statement expresses truth about argumentative, informative, and persuasive
Approach writing; and DISAGREE if it says otherwise.
Reflective __________1. The main objective of an argumentative essay is to tell a story.
Approach __________2. Persuasive text combines facts with emotions to convince the reader
that the author is “right”.
__________3. In developing body paragraphs in an argumentative essay, you must
state your opinion, expand the claims, give reasons to support your
opinion, and argue against the opposite opinion.
__________4. Informative writing aims to give the readers a new understanding or
appreciation of some topics with which you might be familiar with.
__________5. There is no need to present the pros and cons arguments in an issue
of an argumentative text.
