questions. Write your answer in a ½ sheet of paper.

PROCESSING QUESTIONS:
1. What did you feel while doing the activity?
2. What was the most interesting argument presented?
3. How did you come up with those kinds of reasons?
4. If there will be a debate again, what would you
recommend as next topic?

What is an Assertion?
3.ABSTRACTION  An assertion is a statement used to make a
declaration or to express as strong belief on a
particular topic, often without evidence.

Forming Assertions
 Before writing an assertion in literature, the
author must comprehensively read or watch the
literary work.
 He must take down the part he is for, or he is
opposed to, followed by his explanation of it.

What is the Purpose of Writing an Assertion?

 The purpose of writing an assertion is for the writer
to convey directly an idea or feeling and to
convince the reader to accept the writer’s
interpretation of a particular literary work.
 Let readers feel that they should not disagree or
dispute what they read or hear; rather, they should
accept the idea or notion as an indisputable fact.
 It has proved to be one of the best approaches for
writers to express their personal feelings, beliefs,
and ideas directly.
 By using this technique, writers can defend others’
feelings and rights if violated.

Different Types of Assertion can be used in formal or

informal writing.

1. Basic Assertion
 Is a statement used to express the writer’s feelings,
beliefs, and opinions directly.
 This type of assertion is usually used in writing
formal papers like thesis and dissertation.

Example:
 “I wish I could have expressed this idea earlier,
because now someone else has taken the credit”.
 “Excuse me, first I want to finish my work, then I
shall go with you”.

2. Emphatic Assertion
 Is a statement used to express empathy or on how a
person understands the feelings and emotions of the
literary author.
 This can be used on writing a formal or informal
paper.

Examples:
 “I understand you are busy, and me too, but it is
difficult for me to finish this project on my own. So, I
want you to help me complete this project”.

 “I know this is making you angry and frustrated

because you have not gotten a response yet. But I
can help you by giving you estimate of how long it
might take”.

3. Escalating Assertion
 It occurs when someone is not able to give a
response to a person’s basic assertions, and
therefore that person becomes frim about him or her
such as:
 “If you do not finish this work by 6:00 tonight, I
will engage the service to another worker”.
 “I really want to finish this point before you start
yours”.

Four Types of Assertion

 FACT- a statement that can be proven objectively

by proofs or evidences.
Example: The roots of Sampaguita are used for
medicinal purposes, such as an anesthetic and a
sedative.

 CONVENTION – a statement that can be verified

by references to historical precedent, laws, rules,
usage, and customs.
Example: The Sampaguita belongs to the genus,
Jasminum of the family Oleaceae.

 OPINION – a statement that is based on facts but

difficult to objectively verify because of the
uncertainty of producing satisfactory proofs.
Example: The popularity of Sampaguita flowers is
most evident in places of worship.
 PREFERENCE – a statement that is based on
personal choice; therefore, they are subjective
and cannot be objectively proven.

What is Counterclaim?
 When you make evaluative statement that express
how you oppose with claims in a text, you are
formulating counterclaims.
 Counterclaims are statements that oppose the
claims of the writer in the text.
 This counterclaim denies the validity of claim. It’s
important to address counterclaims in your writing.
 Counterclaims are also provable and supportable by
reasons and evidence.

PROCESS:
1. Acknowledge the counterclaim
2. Give reasons or explain the counterclaim
3. Weaken the counterclaim with a rebuttal.

Example:
There are those who claim that technology is
making people less creative. They say that computers
and cell phones make people lazy that they don’t have
to think or create something for themselves. However,
computers and cell phones offer multiple creative
outlets. Using technology, one can design a webpage,
create art, write short story or even a novel (Compute,
2015).
4.APPLICATION
Instruction: The teacher will ask the learners about a
question.

1. How will you apply the assertions and counterclaims in

your daily life?

IV.EVALUATION
Instruction: Classify the following assertion into
statements of FACT, CONVENTION, OPINION, or
PREFERENCE.

1. Facebook is the cooler social media platform than

Twitter.
2. Social media is defined as the internet and mobile-based
tools and devices that facilitate the integration of
technology, telecommunications, and social interaction.
3. In 2012, there were 1.4 billion users of social media
worldwide.
4. Many teenagers’ present obsession with taking selfies.
This shoes that they are the most narcissistic generation.
5. The rose belongs to the genus Rosa of the family
Rosaceous.

V.ASSIGNMENT In 1 whole sheet of paper.
