Lathyrus sativus, also known as grass pea, cicerchia, blue sweet pea, chickling
pea, chickling vetch, Indian pea,[2] white pea[3] and white vetch,[4] is
a legume (family Fabaceae) commonly grown for human consumption
and livestock feed in Asia and East Africa.[5] It is a particularly important crop in areas
that are prone to drought and famine, and is thought of as an 'insurance crop' as it
produces reliable yields when all other crops fail. The seeds contain a neurotoxin that
causes lathyrism, a neurodegenerative disease, if eaten as a primary protein source for
a prolonged period.
LEGUM
Legume
A legume is a
plant in the family
Fabaceae, or the
fruit or seed of
such a plant. When used as a dry grain, the seed is also called a pulse. Legumes are grown
agriculturally, primarily for human consumption, for livestock forage and silage, and as soil-
enhancing green manure. Well-known legumes include beans, soybeans, chickpeas, peanuts,
lentils, lupins, grass peas, mesquite, carob, tamarind, alfalfa, and clover. Legumes produce a
botanically unique type of fruit – a simple dry fruit that develops from a simple carpel and
usually dehisces on two sides.
Bean
A bean is the seed of several plants in the family Fabaceae, which are used
as vegetables for human or animal food. They can be cooked in many different ways,
including boiling, frying, and baking, and are used in many traditional dishes throughout
the world.
Peanut
The peanut belongs to the botanical family (or Leguminosae), commonly known as the
legume, bean, or pea family. Like most other legumes, peanuts
harbor symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria in root nodules. The capacity to fix nitrogen
means peanuts require less nitrogen-containing fertilizer and improve soil fertility,
making them valuable in crop rotations.
