Exercise 1: PERT CHART
The following table shows the tasks, dependencies, and estimated times (in days) a project manager might input
to a PERT chart for a software development project.
Project start date: 12th September 2023 (weekend days are excluded i.e. Saturdays and Sundays)
Activity Optimistic time Most likely time Pessimistic time
1-2 3 6 9
1-6 2 5 8
2-3 6 12 18
2-4 4 5 6
3-5 8 11 14
4-5 3 7 11
6-7 3 9 15
5-8 2 4 6
7-8 8 16 18

i) Calculate the expected duration for each of the activities (2 marks)

ii) Draw the network diagram and deduce the critical path (3 marks)
iii) With the help of a PERT Chart, calculate the earliest start time and latest finish time for each of the activities.
Hence deduce the earliest date the project can be realized. (5 marks)
iv) Due to recurrent ghost towns, activity 5 was delayed by 7 days. Will this delay affect the overall duration of
the project? If yes, when can this project be completed? (2 marks)
v) Draw a Gantt chart for this project (3 marks)
vi) Calculate the variance of the critical activities (3 marks)
vii) Calculate the probability of completing this project on the 23rd of October 2023. (2 marks)
Exercise 2: Case study
Activity 1: Project Charter (5 marks)
In this activity, you will be writing the project charter of your project as discussed in this course. Keep in mind

3. Power (H/M/L): Is their power over your project high, medium or low
4. Interest (H/M/L): Is their interest in your project high, medium or low
5. Key notes
Take your assessment from the Stakeholder Analysis and propose a power-interest grid

Activity 3: Project Plan (5marks)

As a project manager starting a new project, one of your main responsibilities is to identify all project tasks.
Review your project charter and write at least five tasks for your project. Order your tasks and identify milestones.
Ensure that there are at least three milestones.
Give time estimates for your ordered tasks (make use of the three-point estimating technique)

Activity 4: Quality Standards (2 marks)

Identify the primary quality standards for your team and give five criteria to support these quality standards
(Quality standards are the requirements and specifications that the final project must meet in order to be
considered successful)

Activity 5: Executive summary (2 marks)
