Imaginera Architecture

Hardware and Software required to support the Imaginera Architecture

The following hardware specifications define the minimum configuration for the Database
Server, Background Server and Client workstations recommended by Amtech and Futura
Services. To insure Futura Services’ ability to support an Imaginera installation, any deviation
from the following requirements should be discussed, in detail, with Amtech and Futura
Services. These requirements are based on technology available on the date that this
document was published and are subject to change without notice. Amtech and Futura
Services offer no guarantee that the hardware listed has been tested with Imaginera Software.
These requirements are based on performance data collected from Amtech / Futura Services
test configurations.

Note: The Database Server should be a dedicated server and not the domain controller.

Imaginera Requires the Following Hardware Components

 One Microsoft SQL database server dedicated to database processing.

 One Application / Background server dedicated to batch database application processing

with internet access for remote support by Amtech and Futura Services.

 One or more Windows based client workstations for user application processing.

 One or more Postscript Printer or a better compatible printer is recommended

Microsoft Windows Configuration & Licenses

User Licensing

Per Seat
With Per Seat mode, a Client Access License applies to a specific client computer (that is, a
"seat"). Using this option, an unlimited number of client computers may access the Server
Software, provided that each client computer has its own dedicated Client Access License.
Once a Client Computer has been licensed in this mode, it has permission to access the
services of any server running the Server Software. Once you choose the Per Seat mode, your
choice is permanent.

Please note that a Client Access License is required whether you use client software
supplied by Microsoft or software from a third-party vendor to utilize the services of Server
Software. For example, if the computer or workstation is running Windows for Workgroups,
Windows NT Workstation, or any of the other client software that Windows NT Server
supports, a separate Client Access License for Windows NT Server is required.

Per Server
You may elect to use Microsoft SQL Server, Windows Server, SNA Server, or Microsoft
Exchange Server in "Per Server" mode. With Per Server licensing, a Client Access License
is dedicated for use with a particular server. This alternative allows concurrent-use
licensing; that is, the number of computers or workstations entitled to use a specific server at
any point in time is equal to the number of Client Access Licenses that have been
designated for use with that specific server. Under this option, you designate the number of
Client Access Licenses that apply to this server during setup of the Server Software.

Active Directory Domain Services

Forest Root Domain

The first domain deployed in an Active Directory forest is called the forest root domain. This
domain remains the forest root domain for the life cycle of the Active Directory deployment. It
cannot be changed without redeploying the entire forest.

The forest root domain contains the Enterprise Admins and Schema Admins groups. These
administrator groups are used to manage forest-level operations, such as the addition and
removal of domains and changes to the schema.

Domain Controllers
A minimum of two domain controllers is needed to provide fault tolerance for a domain.
Domain controllers can be placed in physical locations to provide local authentication.
Additional domain controllers may be required based on user authentication and application
requirements.

Stand-Alone Server
A stand-alone server is a server that doesn’t run Active Directory services.

Application / Background Server Hardware Requirements

The Application / background server hardware configuration is independent of the number of

Imaginera users. It hosts batch and background application processing as well as providing
remote access capabilities for support and training.

Typical Application / Background Server Set-Up

Application Server for Locally Connected Imaginera Users

Users 2 to 5 6 to 10 1 to 25 26 to 35 36 to 70
Processor N/A Optional Dual Core 2.33 (2) Dual Core Xeon 2.0 (2) Dual Core Xeon 2.66

Terminal Server(s) Hardware Requirements

Terminal Server Licensing is the client license management service for the operating systems
in the Windows Server 2003 family. The Terminal Server Licensing service works with Terminal
Server to provide, catalog, and enforce license policy among Terminal Server clients.

Typical Application Server Set-Up

Application Server for Terminal Servers

Users 1 – 10 11 to 20 20 to 40 41 to 60

Database Server Hardware Requirements
The database server hardware configuration changes with the number of users supported.
Amtech clients are encouraged to purchase hardware necessary to support the total number of
anticipated users for the database server, as no guarantees can be made regarding scalability
of memory and disk configurations. Listed are the recommended minimums.

Typical Database Server Set-Up

Single Database Server dedicated to Imaginera’s SQL Database

Users 2 to 5 6 to 10 11 to 25 26 to 35 36 to 70

Database Server Software

Amtech recommends that the following software be installed on the Database server.

 Microsoft Server 2003, or higher, with appropriate user licenses

 SQL Server 2005 or higher with appropriate user licenses. (Provided through Amtech)

 Symantec Backup Exec.

Equipment Recommendations

Uninterruptible Power Supplies

The Uninterruptible Power Supplies will protect your data in case of a power surge or outage
and Amtech highly recommends that all critical units be protected by an UPS. At a minimum,
the server that contains the database should be protected.
