THE SAFARI RALLY.
School was closing for the holidays. The standard Four teacher was telling the
children about the safari Rally.
“Every year there is a Safari Rally,” he said. “Many cars take part in it. The cars drive
through many different towns and villages in our country. This year the cars will pass very
near our school. If you go to watch them, be very careful and do not go too close to the
road. Also, you must never throw stones at them.”
The next Thursday, the Safari Rally began. Kiprotich and Kibet agreed to meet near
the school. Kiprotich arrived later than Kibet. “Have any rally cars passed yet?” Kiprotich
asked. “No,” said Kibet, “and I have been waiting since early in the morning. The first cars
will pass here very soon now.”
“When they pass, we will cheer,” said Kiprotich.
“I want to see them speeding along the road,” said Kibet. “If they drive too fast,
they’ll spin and overtun. I also want to watch the cars climbing up the hill.”
“They may slip and slide because it’s very muddy. It’s been raining for the last three
days.” said Kiprotich.
“Here they come!” someone shouted. The two boys ran to the side of the road.
“Hey!” said Kiprotich. “We shouldn’t be too near the road when the cars drive past. Don’t
forget what the teacher said. It isn’t safe.” The first car came speeding down the road and
began to slide.
6
“Oh, Oh! I hope there won’t be an accident,” said Kibet. “I don’t think so,” said
Kiprotich, “but I think the car is stuck in the mud. Do you want to help push it?” “Yes, let’s
go,” said Kibet.
The two boys ran down the road towards the car. The driver tried to move it but the
wheels kept on spinning. Just then another rally car came speeding along. It got stuck in
the mud too. Both drivers jumped out of their cars to see how deep the mud was.
