questions that follow.
Jack lived with his widowed mother in a small iron-sheet house at the edge
of a hill. The hill had many thick trees that formed a fairly large forest. Many
birds and animals lived there. Jack and his mother were very poor and had
to sell all their possessions in order to buy food. Then time came when all
they had to sell was a cow. Jack was told to drive the cow to the market and
sell it at the highest price possible.
He set off but he had gone very far when he met a man who wanted to buy
the cow. The man did not offer money. He gave him two buckets full of
beans and Jack accepted them in exchange for the cow.
When he reached home, his mother was very angry with him. She was so
annoyed that she grabbed the buckets of beans and threw them out of the
window. The beans scattered all over the courtyard as Jack watched
