Exploring "Animal Fair"

Grade Level: First Grade Time Required: 30 minutes

California Music Standard:


1.MU:Pr4.1: With limited guidance, demonstrate and discuss personal interest in, knowledge
about, and purpose of varied musical selections.

Objective: Students will listen to the song "Animal Fair" and identify different animals
mentioned in the lyrics. They will then have the opportunity to sing along with the song and use
their creativity to color pictures of the animals they hear in the song. This activity will help
students connect music with their personal interests and develop a deeper understanding of
animals through a fun and interactive experience.

Final assessment: Students' participation in the listening and creative coloring activities, as well
as their ability to express their thoughts about the song and their chosen animal.

Materials:
● "Animal Fair" song audio
● Whiteboard and markers
● Paper and crayons
● Visuals of animals

Opening Activity: "Animal Fair" Discussion


1. Display visuals of animals or describe various animals (e.g., lion, elephant, monkey).
2. Ask students what animals they would expect to see at an "Animal Fair."
3. Encourage creative responses and engage in a brief discussion.

Lesson Steps:
Step 1: Introduction to "Animal Fair"
1. Play a short segment of the "Animal Fair" song.
2. Ask students to listen attentively to the music and the lyrics.
3. Discuss what they hear in the song and any initial thoughts or feelings it evokes.
Step 2: Singing the "Animal Fair" Song
1. Provide the lyrics of the "Animal Fair" song on the whiteboard or printed handouts.
2. Play the song and encourage students to sing along.
3. Guide them by paying attention to the melody.
Step 3: Creative Coloring and Animal Research
1. Instruct students to choose an animal from the song (e.g., lion, elephant, monkey) and
draw a picture of it.
2. Encourage them to use their imagination and creativity in their coloring.
3. After drawing, ask students to write a short sentence about their chosen animal or share
an interesting fact they know about it.
Step 4: Sharing and Discussion

Assessment: Observe how involved the students are in singing the song, how creative they are

song and the animal they chose. During the lesson, evaluate how engaged and involved they
were.
The purpose of this first-grade lesson plan is to give our young students a chance to learn more
about animals, music, imagination, and creativity. As they learn this lesson, they will have the
chance to sing, listen, draw, and do research. They will also have the opportunity to explore
different animal sounds and movements.
