B. Reason
Some existing flow indicators are vulnerable to fracturing which causes parts of the indicator to
separate. If this occurs, the oxygen cannot flow to the user of the mask when needed during an
emergency.
This Service Bulletin describes the mandatory replacement of flow indicator part number 118023-02
with the improved flow indicator part number 118023-12. The improved flow indicator can be identified
by the green marking (refer to Figure 1).
The operator may purchase a replacement mask with the improved flow indicator installed as an
alternative to performing the modification covered by this Service Bulletin.

Assuming access has been obtained to the unit, the following is an estimate to accomplish the
modification:
Verification: .6 min.
Disassembly: .3 min.
Assembly: 1.2 min.
Testing: .4 min.
Cleaning: .5 min.
Tubing Stretcher Tool part number 997300-00, available from B/E Aerospace, Lenexa, KS (refer to
Figure 2).
A. Verification
(1) Make sure the part number shown on the mask data label appears in one of the lists of effective
part numbers. If the part number is not listed, no further action is required (refer to Figure 3 for
location of data label).
(2) Make sure the date of manufacture shown on the mask data label is on or after January 1, 2002
and before March 1, 2006. If the date is outside this range, no further action is required (refer to
Figure 3 for location of data label).
(3) Make sure the marking, "FLOW", on the flow indicator is in black and the letter "W" does not appear
on the right side of the mask data label (approximate location is shown in Figure 3). In the event the
marking on the flow indicator is in green and the letter "W" is on the right side of the data label, flow
indicator replacement has already been implemented. No further action is required.
WARNING: THE USE OF OIL AND OTHER PETROLEUM BASE LUBRICANTS ON OXYGEN
EQUIPMENT WILL CREATE A DANGEROUS FIRE HAZARD.
CAUTION: THE WORK AREA MUST BE CLEAN AND FREE OF HYDROCARBON RESIDUE, OIL,
OR OTHER PETROLEUM BASE LUBRICANTS.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL TO CUT OFF ONLY A MINIMUM AMOUNT OF TUBING (1, 4). CUT OFF
NO MORE THAN TWO INCHES OF TUBING FROM BOTH TUBES (1, 4) TOGETHER.
(1) Cut the supply tube (4) loose from the flow indicator (2).
(2) Cut the flow indicator (2) loose from the mask bag assembly tube (1).
NOTE: Cut each tube (1, 4) square so that the end is flat and perpendicular to the axis of the tube
(1, 4).
WARNING: THE NEW FLOW INDICATOR (3) MUST BE INSTALLED SO THAT THE FLOW
DIRECTION IS FROM THE SUPPLY TUBE (4) TOWARD THE MASK BAG
ASSEMBLY TUBE (1). THE ARROW ON THE FLOW INDICATOR (3) SHOULD POINT
TOWARDS THE BAG. IF THE NEW FLOW INDICATOR (3) IS INSTALLED
BACKWARDS, THE FLOW INDICATOR WILL NOT SHOW WHEN OXYGEN FLOWS
TO THE MASK.
CAUTION: THE SUPPLY TUBE (4) AND THE MASK BAG ASSEMBLY TUBE (1) ENDS SHOULD
ALWAYS BE FULLY INSTALLED ON THE FLOW INDICATOR (3) UP TO THE
SHOULDER OF THE FLOW INDICATOR.
CAUTION: THE TUBING STRETCHER TOOL PART NUMBER 997300-00 MUST BE SECURED
TO A BENCH TOP BEFORE USE (REFER TO FIGURE 2).
(1) Use the Tubing Stretcher Tool part number 997300-00 (refer to Figure 2) to expand the inside
diameter of the end of the mask bag assembly tube (1).
(2) Attach the prepared end of the mask bag assembly tube (1) to the clear window end of the flow
indicator (3). Slide the tubing on the open end of the flow indicator (3) until the mask bag assembly
tube (1) end meets the shoulder of the flow indicator (3).
CAUTION: WHILE PUTTING THE TUBE (1) ON THE FLOW INDICATOR (3), DO NOT USE TOO
MUCH FORCE THAT MAY DAMAGE THE FLOW INDICATOR (3).
NOTE: Momentarily dipping the tube (1) end into denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol
(commercially available) will make it easier to slide the tube (1) on the flow indicator (3).
(3) Use the Tubing Stretcher Tool part number 997300-00 (refer to Figure 2) to expand the inside
diameter of the end of the supply tube (4).
CAUTION: DO NOT MAKE THE INSIDE DIAMETER OF THE SUPPLY TUBE (4) LARGER THAN
THE DIAMETER NEEDED TO PUT THE TUBE OVER THE OUTSIDE OF THE
FITTING OF THE NEW FLOW INDICATOR (3). DO NOT MAKE THE INSIDE
DIAMETER OF THE SUPPLY TUBE (4) SO LARGE THAT THE TUBE SPLITS OR
DISCOLORATION OF THE TUBE OCCURS.
(4) Attach the prepared end of the supply tube (4) on the end of the flow indicator (3) having the green
marking. Slide the tubing on the open end of the flow indicator (3) until the supply tube (4) end meets
the shoulder of the flow indicator (3).
CAUTION: WHILE PUTTING THE TUBE (4) ON THE FLOW INDICATOR (3), DO NOT USE TOO
MUCH FORCE THAT MAY DAMAGE THE FLOW INDICATOR (3).
NOTE: Momentarily dipping the tube (4) end into denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol
(commercially available) will make it easier to slide the tube (4) on the flow indicator (3).
(5) After the tubes (1, 4) have contracted around the flow indicator (3), make sure the tubes (1, 4) are
tight on the flow indicator (3).
(6) Once the new flow indicator (3) is installed in the assembly, write on the data label on the bag
assembly with permanent ink. Write the letter “W” on the right side of the data label approximately
as shown in Figure 3.

Passenger Oxygen Mask
WARNING: IF THE NEW FLOW INDICATOR (3) IS INSTALLED BACKWARDS, THE FLOW
INDICATOR WILL NOT SHOW WHEN OXYGEN FLOWS TO THE MASK.
(1) Look for the directional arrow that has been stamped on the side of the flow indicator (3) body. The
flow directional arrow must point toward the oxygen mask bag assembly.
(2) Make sure the directional arrow and markings are in green, showing that the replacement has been
implemented.
(3) Make sure the letter "W" is on the right side of the data label (approximate location is shown in
Figure 3), showing that the replacement has been implemented.
E. Cleaning
CAUTION: DO NOT LET DENATURED ALCOHOL TOUCH THE MASK BAG AS IT MAY REMOVE
INK ON THE BAG.
(1) Use a clean lint-free cloth moistened with denatured alcohol to lightly wipe down the mask cup and
tubing. Do not allow cleaning solution to enter tube or reservoir bag.
