Mid Semester Exam Spring 202,2-2023
Advanced Mine Ventilation (MN 5242)
Max. Marks:30 Max Time: 2 Hours

I nstructions:
There are seven questions. Answer all the questions.
Make your valid assumption, wherever necessary.

Q.1: Write short notes on

a) Recirculation and its Detection Algorithm (Marks:2)
b) Hardy Cross lterative Procedure (Marks:2)
c) Control flow and free splitting networks (Marks:2)
d) Compressible and incompressible air flow (Marks:2)
e) Mine and Fan Characteristics curve (Marks: 2)

Q.2. What are the benefits of controlled recirculation? Derive mathematical expressions for determining
the contaminant level in intake and return side of cross-cut recirculation circuit (path).
(Marks:3)
Q.3. Given a mine with a single fan whose static pressure is 500 Pa and total pressure is 750 Pa at a

quantity of 200 m'/s. Generate the data for plotting the mine characteristic curve. (Marks: 3)

Q.4. Given the ventilation system as shown in Figure l with resistances and assigned quantities as
indicated , locate regulators where needed, specifying the amount of regulation at each. Determine the
regulator resistance. (Marks: 3)

by the fan and also determine the concentration of methane in the locations A and B marked. The intake .

fresh air has a methane content of 0.1% and the make of gas at the workplace is 0.05 m3/s' (Marks: 3)
