Social media: The appropriate age for children and young adults to make use of social media.

Introduction

According to the American Academy of child and adolescent psychiatry, two thirds of teens have
their own mobile devices with internet capabilities. On average, teens are online almost nine hours
a day, this poses a threat as social media has evolved from a place to connect with friends, to a
place where a teenager commits suicide on his Instagram live. This essay will explore the impact
of social media on the mental and emotional well-being of children and adolescents.

The world is a very busy place; parents take extra hours at work, they come back exhausted. It is
easy to give a child a phone to keep them occupied, to get some rest or catch up with work.
Social media is a busy place, information is mostly uncensored and kids have access to these
things once they have a connection to the internet.

‘A 2021 CENSIS report revealed an even progressive increment of smartphone use by adolescents,
which reached 95%. Many adolescents (59%) admitted they use smartphones even more frequently
than in the past with a daily use of more than 3h in 46% of cases. Adolescents connected Internet
alone (59%), consulting social media, mostly Instagram (72%), TikTok (62%),YouTube (58%). In this
context, social interaction over the Internet or simply social network consulting may play an
important part in the lives of many young people, influencing them and their relationship with
self-esteem and well-being. Not being guided and monitored in Internet fruition, the young may
be exposed to several risks, including cyberbullying which affects 7% of children aged 11–13 years
and 5.2% of 14–17 years adolescents or stalking which affects more than 600 minors in Italy’.
Children should not have access to social media and even for teenagers, access should be
supervised. There is hardly any way to be in control of what anyone posts on social media. There
are pornographic contents, content that are mentally triggering, uncensored videos and
exposing a child to such at a tender age is detrimental. There have been instances of pedophiles
sending messages to underage children, asking for sexual favors. You cannot control what
anyone chooses to do on social media but you can control their access to your kids.

Conclusion

The argument that social media helps young ones to be creative and stay informed is very
limited and myopic and takes away the importance of offline learning, making valuable
connections with immediate family and learning skills that can be practiced without a social
media presence. There are several ways for kids to learn and make new friends and the internet
is not the best option at a tender age.

My conclusion is this, children and young adults should have limited access to social media and
should not be allowed to use it without adequate supervision.
