Ellipse with Center at (h, k)

If the major axis is parallel to the x-axis, the equation is:

(𝑥 − ℎ)2 (𝑦 − 𝑘)2
+
𝑎2 𝑏2
If the major axis is parallel to the y-axis, the equation is:=

(𝑥 − ℎ)2 (𝑦 − 𝑘)2
+
𝑏2 𝑎2

(𝑥−3)2 (𝑦+1)2
Example Graph the ellipse + = 1.
16 4

Solution First, we know this is a horizontal ellipse because 16 > 4. Therefore, the
center is (3, −1) and 𝑎 = 4 and 𝑏 = 2. Use this information to graph the ellipse.

To graph, plot the center and then go out 4 units to the right and left and then up and down
2 units. This is also how you can find the vertices and co-vertices. The vertices are (3 ±
4, −1) or (7, −1) and (−1 − 1). The co-vertices are (3, −1 ± 2) or (3, 1) and (3, −3).

To find the foci, we need to find 𝑐 using 𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 − 𝑏2

𝑐 2 = 16 − 4 = 12

𝑐 = 2√3

Therefore, the foci are (3 ± 2√3, −1)

From this problem, we can create formulas for finding the vertices, co-vertices, and foci of
an ellipse with center (ℎ, 𝑘 ). Also, when graphing an ellipse, not centered at the origin,
make sure to plot the center.

Example Find the equation of the ellipse with foci at (4, −2) and (10, −2), and vertex at
(12, −2).

Solution The center, midway between the foci, is at (7, −2). The distance between the
foci is 6 units and the given vertex is 5 units from the center; hence 𝑐 = 3 and 𝑎 = 5. Then
𝑏2 = 𝑎2 − 𝑐 2 = 16. Since the major axis is parallel to the x-axis, we substitute in the
equation

(𝑥 − ℎ)2 (𝑦 − 𝑘)2
+ =1
𝑎2 𝑏2
(𝑥 − 7 (𝑦 + 2)2
+ =1
25 16

The graph of this ellipse is constructed below:

Example Reduce to standard form of equation

4𝑦 2 + 9𝑥 2 − 24𝑦 − 72𝑥 + 144 = 0

Solution The essential steps in the process follow.

4(𝑦 2 − 6𝑦) + 9(𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 ) = −144

4(𝑦 2 − 6𝑦 + 9) + 9(𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 + 16) = −144 + 36 + 144

4(𝑦 − 3) 2 + 9(𝑥 − 4)2 = 36

(𝑦 − 3) 2 (𝑥 − 4)2
+ =1
9 4
The coordinates of the center are (4, 3); 𝑎 = 3, 𝑏 = 2, and

𝑐 = √𝑎2 − 𝑏2 = √9 − 4 = √5

The vertices are at (4, 0) and (4, 6), and the ends of the minor axis are at (2, 3) and (6, 3).
The coordinates of the foci are (4, 3 − √5) and (4, 3 + √5). The graph is shown below.
