The Six Ethical Lenses

1. The Right Lense
 Write here what you have understood as the essence of this lense:
 The right lens is an ethical approach that exercises a person’s right to choose
freely what they want to do in their life. When making an ethical decision, the
right lens is taking a part in an ethical framework of decision making because it
helps an individual to analyze a moral dilemma and evaluate the actions based on
whether they respect or violate the moral rights of the people affected. This
ethical lens helps an individual to decide while protecting and giving importance
to the moral rights of the people involved in a decision. Additionally, it helps an
individual to assess the potential effect or consequences of our action. In essence,
it is about making a decision that does not infringe in the rights of others.

 Write here a question or questions it triggered or a situation, an issue you could relate
with it:
 In relation to our reproductive rights, do we have the right to make decisions
about our own bodies or reproductive choices (contraception, abortion,
surrogacy)?

2. The Justice Lense

 Write here what you have understood as the essence of this lense:
 Justice lens focuses on equality and fairness treatment for others. It is making a
decision that treats others fairly and equally, emphasizing the importance of
giving each person their due or the rightful treatment based on how worthy or
how much they need the rightful treatment. This is because this lens implies that
it is also not necessary to treat everyone in the same way in every respect we
give. For example, if a person has a problem coping with the school activities, it
is fair to give him extra time to explain the instructions thoroughly and help him
do the activities even if the others are not given the equal time.

 Write here a question or questions it triggered or a situation, an issue you could relate
with it:
 Is a decision still considered fair if it has more impact/benefits on one party?
 Situation: the large gap between the wealthy and the poor
o Is it fair for wealthy individuals to receive a free education in state
universities compared to those with lower incomes?

3. The Utilitarian Lense

 Write here what you have understood as the essence of this lense:
 In this ethical lens, it analyzes the possible consequences of an action or decision
made and how it could impact stakeholders. The utilitarian lens particularly
strives for happiness while avoiding unhappiness. This means that the decision
should do more good over harm for those involved. Additionally, applying
utilitarian approach decision making helps an individual to evaluate the
alternatives or options and weigh the potential consequences, may it be positive
or negative. In this way, individuals can produce the greatest amount of
happiness or well-being for the largest number of people.

 Write here a question or questions it triggered or a situation, an issue you could relate
with it:
 Situation: Donating blood when you’re scared of needles just to help and save
people’s lives.

4. The Common Good Lense

 Write here what you have understood as the essence of this lense:
 From the word itself “Common Good”, this lens emphasizes the value of mutual
concerns of the community rather than yourself only. It prioritizes the well-being
of the community. With this lens, an individual is acknowledging his actions have
an impact not only on himself but also on others. The common good lens
encourages an individual to consider how his/her decisions can positively impact
on society. In decision making, an individual is considering the broader social
context that contributes to the flourishing of the community.
 Write here a question or questions it triggered or a situation, an issue you could relate
with it:
 Situation: Voting and campaigning for a great leader during the elections. Issue:
Voting for Leni Robredo during the elections

5. The Virtue Lense

 Write here what you have understood as the essence of this lense:
 Virtue lens is an approach that emphasizes our moral character or virtues. Our
duties or the consequences of our actions do not guide our choices/actions. It
doesn’t deal with the rightness or wrongness of our actions but rather on our
cultivation of virtue such as honesty, courage, compassion, and justice. It focuses
on the character traits of an individual, his/her habits that allow him/her to act in
ways that develop their humanity.
 Write here a question or questions it triggered or a situation, an issue you could relate
with it:
 How does one make a habit of being virtuous in every decision-making?

6. The Care Ethics Lense

 Write here what you have understood as the essence of this lense:
 In contrary to virtue lens that focuses on the development of character of an
individual, care ethics lens is more of caring relationship with others. Not just a
relationship itself, but what lies between those relationships. It underlines the
value of building relationships, the generality of human dependence on others,
the relevance of emotions and reality, and the specific to the situation morality of
ethical argument that goes beyond fixed dedication to impersonal ethical
principles. In essence, it is an idea of empathy, it involves understanding others in
terms of interest, feelings, and their point of view. Our moral decision-making is
influenced by our bodies and emotions such as compassion and empathy.
 Write here a question or questions it triggered or a situation, an issue you could relate
with it:
 The Gaza situation. A lot of people are boycotting Zionist organizations because
of Palestine.
