Lesson 15
Structural Analysis

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
1. determine the meaning of a word through structural analysis;
2. list down other known prefixes and provide examples;
3. add a suffix to the given base word to form a new word;
4. appraise the value of analyzing word parts in improving one’s vocabulary.

II. Preliminaries.
Take a look at the illustration below. How many words can you form for the given root -
port using the prefixes and suffixes?

re – gain

trans – across able – able to

PORT
ful – full of im – out of

III. Content
The breaking of parts of a word to determine its meaning is referred to as structural
analysis. Analyzing the word parts is helpful in improving one’s vocabulary. This practice
involves a knowledge of AFFIXATION. Affixation necessitates the use of prefixes and
suffixes, and the study of roots. Prefixes, suffixes, and roots are derived mainly from the Latin
and Greek languages.
Prefixes are word parts added at the beginning of a root, while suffixes are those that
are added at the end.
Prefixes may indicate numbers. Tri, for example. Means three. If attached to the –
angle, the word triangle (a shape with three angles) is formed. Prefixes may also indicate the
opposite of the base word. Dis is a prefix that means NOT. Therefore, if it precedes the word
obedient and becomes DISOBEDIENT, it implies that the person being described is NOT obeying.
Some commonly used prefixes are the following:
Prefix Meaning Example
Hyper Over Hyperactive
Circum Around Circumnavigate
Bene Good Benevolent
Mal Bad Malnutrition

1
Prefix Meaning Example
de Remove Deactivate
intra Within Intramurals
macro Large Macro-management
auto Self Autobiography
multi Many Multi-awarded
semi Half Semi-finals

Suffixes may determine the function or the tense of a given word.

Suffixes like -ance, -ence, -dom, -hood, -ment, -ship, and -ness are noun endings.
Instant (adj) - instance (noun)
Brilliant (adj) - brilliance (noun)
Free (adj) - freedom (noun)
