Examination July 2021 21038

Common to IT A, IT B, Civil
EIR2C4 Electrical Engineering
Time 3 Hours Max. Marks: 60
Note: Attempt any two parts from each question.

Q.1 a) Discuss about Series and Parallel resonance in detail. A resistance of 24 ohm, a 3+3
capacitance of 150 micro farad and an inductance of 0.16 H are connected in series with
each other. A supply at 240 V, 50Hz, is applied to the ends of the combination.
Calculate (a) the current in the circuit (b) the potential difference across each element of
the circuit (C) the frequency to which the supply would need to be changed so that the
current would be at unity power factor and find the current at this frequency.
b) Explain the two-wattmeter method in detail for a balanced 3 phase star or delta 3+3
connected load along with its necessary circuit, derivation and phasor diagrams. A 3
phase, 440 V, delta connected system has the loads: branch RY, 20KW at power factor
unity: branch YB, 30KVA at power factor 0.8 lagging: branch BR, 20 KVA at power
factor 0.6 leading. Find the line currents and readings on wattmeters whose currents in
phases R and B.
c) Using Norton’s theorem, Find RN and IN of the circuit at terminal a-b. 6

Q.2 a) Explain Maximum power transfer theorem in detail with an example. In the 3+3
circuit shown, what is the value of RL that maximizes the power delivered to RL
and also calculate power delivered ?
b Explain Norton’s Theorem in detail with an example. For the circuit shown in Fig, the 3+3
Norton equivalent source current value is _________ A and its resistance is
___________ Ohms

c) Explain Thevenins Theorem in detail with an example Find the Thevenins equivalent 3+3
about AB for the circuit shown in Figure.

Q.3 a) Explain Ampere’s circuital law? Derive relation for magneto motive force along a long 2+4
straight conductor.

b) Discuss about Electromagnetic induction, Induced EMF and its types in detail? 3+3
A coil consists of 1000 turns of wire uniformly wound on a non magnetic ring of mean
diameter 40 cm and cross sectional area 20 cm2. Calculate (a) the inductance of the coil
(b) the energy stored in the magnetic field when the coil is carrying current of 15 A (c)
the emf induced in the coil if this current is completely interrupted in 0.01 second.

c) Explain B-H curve in detail with its significance. A coil of 500 turns and resistance of 20 3+3
ohm is wound uniformly on an iron ring of mean circumference 50 cm and Cross-
sectional area of 4 cm2. It is connected to a 24-v d.c. supply. Under this Condition, the
relative permeability of iron is 800. Calculate: 1) MMF of coil and magnetizing force. 2)
Total flux in the iron 3) reluctance of the ring.
Q.4 a) The O.C. and S.C. test data are given below for a single phase, 5 KVA, 200 V/400V, 6
50Hz transformer
O.C. test – 200V, 1.25 A, 150W.
S.C. test – 20V, 12.5 A, 175W
Draw the equivalent circuit of transformer
(1) Referred to L.V. side and
(2) Referred to H.V. side inserting all the parameter values.

b) A 400 KVA, 11000/220 V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer gave the following test 6
result:
No load test: at rated voltage, Wo = 1600W
Short circuit test: at rated current Wsc = 2600W
Calculate all day efficiency if the transformer is loaded as follows in a day:
200 KVA, 0.8 pf, 10 hours
100 KVA, 0.6 pf, 8 hours
No load – 6 hours
c) Answer in short, Why: 6
1) Transformer core is laminated and cut into thin sheets.
2) LV winding is kept near to the core
3) Transformer oil is filled in the tank
4) Advantage of OC and SC test over other test carried on a transformer
5) Function of conservator tank, bushings, breather
6) Transformer not operated on DC

Q.5 a) Discuss working of a 3 phase synchronous motor in detail along with their starting 3+3
methods.
b) Explain different characteristics of DC Motor and DC Generator in detail with suitable 4+2
characteristic graphs. A four-pole generator with wave wound armature has 51 slots, each
having 24 conductors per slot. The flux per pole is 0.01 wb. At what speed must the
armature rotate to give an induced emf of 250V? what will be the voltage developed, if the
winding is lap connected and the armature rotates at the same speed.
