El oso de anteojos.

Tremarctos ornatus
Description:

• The spectacled bear, scientifically known as

Tremarctos ornatus, is the only bear native
to South America and is considered a
"sister" species to the Andean bear.
• Apart from their distinctive patch of fur
around their eyes, spectacled bears have
excellent vision and a keen sense of smell
that helps them locate food in their
mountainous environment.
• They are solitary animals and are most
active during the day, though they can be
active at night depending on their habitat
conditions and food availability.
Habitat:

• Spectacled bears prefer remote,

mountainous areas with dense and
abundant vegetation, providing them
with shelter and a constant food
source.
• They are especially common in cloud
forests and high-altitude paramos,
where they encounter a variety of
plants such as bromeliads, orchids,
and cecropia trees.
• These habitats are also home to a
diversity of fauna, including birds,
amphibians, and other mammals,
contributing to the spectacled bear's
diet.
Where They're
Found:
• Spectacled bears are an endemic
species to the Andes of South America,
ranging from Venezuela and Colombia to
Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
• In Peru, they can be found in a variety of
mountainous regions, from the central
Andes to the Amazon rainforest of the
eastern foothills.
• Although their geographic distribution is
wide, spectacled bear populations have
decreased significantly due to habitat
loss and illegal hunting in many areas.
Average Lifespan:

• The average lifespan of spectacled

bears in the wild is around 20 to 25
years, but various factors such as
food availability and human pressure
can influence their longevity.
• In captivity, spectacled bears have
been shown to live longer, with some
individuals reaching 30 years of age or
more under appropriate care and
habitat conditions.
