DESCRIPTION
PCUs come in two versions: Select 100 and Select 200. The Select
100 is just a smaller version of the Select 200.
Either of the Select 100 or the Select 200 PCUs can control the
entire Ovation Select system through the use of their touchscreens.
The touch-sensitive screens let the user display and activate various
control options for the associated equipment by touching the screen.
NOTE: Each PCU is configured with the applicable control
functions/screens based on its location in the aircraft.

CAUTION: Use only a finger or soft, dull

instrument to push the touchscreen. Do not use sharp
objects (such as a pen or stylus like those used with
electronic organizers) to push the touchscreen as this
can cause damage and may void the warranty.

OPERATION
The Select 100 PCU has a 4 in. by 1 in. display area. The Select 200
PCU has a 4 in. by 2 in. display area.
Representative touchscreen control functions for the Select 100/200
PCUs are shown below. Not all controls/screens are shown.
Different PCUs on the aircraft have access to different screens
based on their location in the aircraft.
After the PCU´s are turned on, a welcome screen appears as shown
below:

11. JETMAP HD

Figure 11-1: Jetmap HD Screen

INTRODUCTION
JETMAP HD allows passengers to continuously monitor the
progress of their flight with high definition, worldwide terrain maps
combined with the U.S. national highway/street database for viewing
detailed street-level data on the aircraft entertainment video system.
JetMap HD also has modes which allow viewing of flight parameters
such as time to destination, present position, etc., along with other
information as a means of keeping passengers up to date on the
progress of the flight.
The system provides quick and accurate tracking of flight path, time
to destination, altitude, speed, heading, and more. Passenger
interaction includes simple panning across the entire globe
regardless of aircraft position and quick navigation through zoom
levels. Additional features include sun maps that show areas of
sunlight and darkness across the globe, a Relative Location Indicator
(RLI) that shows nearby cities and points of interest, and a night
graphics setting for darkened cabins.

Note: Graphics may change slightly from aircraft to aircraft.

8 Arrival Time MIU Time of arrival at destination.
Calculated as current time at
destination + time to destination.
Time to destination from following
sources is used in this order of
priority based on availability:
1. AV Briefer: AV/B input overrides
FMS data.
1.a) If ICAO & TTD both are entered
from AV/B, both will be used as is.
1.b) If only ICAO is entered from
AV/B then calculated TTD is used.
In this case calculated TTD is time
to destination determined from ICAO
entered in AV/B. In both of these
cases (1.a & 1.b), FMS data is
overridden since data was entered
in AV/B.
2. FMS (See [Note 2] to give priority

Menu Settings
Use the LEFT/RIGHT Configuration Control to scroll through the
possible settings on this page. When the desired setting is shown,
scroll down to the next item.
Connection Enable – This setting allows the user to select the
hardware source for satellite connection to the Internet. Content files
from the Internet connection provide the information to display;
News, Weather, Sports, Business, tickers and News reader panels.
The selection of the connection medium should consider the
available equipment on the aircraft. Selecting a connection medium
which is not installed on the aircraft will prevent content from being
downloaded. Content download can be disabled by selecting the
Fetch Disabled option in the sub menu.
Content related buttons include News, Wx, Sports, Biz, or Reader.
The selection of the type of content to be downloaded can be
customized (see Configuration menu in Content Configuration
submenu in System Setting 2). Content downloads are automatically
periodically refreshed. Download progress is displayed in any of the
content views and the news reader screen. (See Content Mode
Section for description of progress bar messages that may be
presented and a screenshot of a content download screen)
Selecting this setting enables the Content to be turned on for use
with the many sources available to the JetMap HD.
The Connection Enable submenu has the 6 options that follow:
1. Ethernet – Selecting this setting enables JetMap HD to use
a High Speed Data SATCOM Ethernet connection, if
available on the aircraft. This allows JetMap HD to access
the Content ground station through the Internet. Refer to the
Media Interface Unit (MIU) Installation Manual PN 762-5164-
001 for details.
2. ICG – Utilizes an external Iridium based International
Communications Group (ICG) voice/data unit over the
JetMap HD RS232 port.
3. Aircell – Utilizes an external Iridium based Aircell unit such
as the Aircell Axxess II.
4. AirSat II – Utilizes an external Iridium based Airsat II unit.

5. Fetch Disabled – Blocks any content from being

downloaded.
6. Iridium – Factory test use only.
Master Storage – Indicates the storage space available to every
PCU.
Local Storage – Indicates Local storage space available to the PCU
that stored it.
MIU Volume – Allows the volume level of the briefings broadcast
through the aircraft public address (PA) system to be turned down at
the source. The level selection bar represents the lowest to the
greatest output volume setting.
Refresh Content – This selection executes a one-time forced
update to the Content which will force a check for updated files on
the content servers before the selected refresh period has expired.
Files which have been previously downloaded and are still fresh with
regard to the refresh period will not be re-downloaded unless there is
a new file on the server. Set to "On" and select "Save and Exit" from
the main configuration window. An active connection to the Internet
will be initiated when Refresh Content is selected or the refresh
period has expired. The Refresh Content setting will be returned to
the off state after the setting is saved to allow for the next forced
refresh. Any newly downloaded content will be saved by the system
automatically based on the Content Configuration selections. Refer
to the System Settings 2 Configuration section to configure the
content configuration settings.
Note: Use this setting as a way to ensure you are not viewing
outdated data. Otherwise, you will need to pay attention to
the time stamps mentioned elsewhere in the Operator’s
Manual.
Demo Mode – Set to “On” and use “Save & Exit” from the main
configuration window to play back a previous flight. Use this as a
demonstration to show what JetMap HD looks like in actual
operation. This demonstration uses aircraft (ARINC 429) flight data
that was previously recorded onboard an actual airplane. Other
demonstration flights can be installed at the factory to replace the
currently installed demo.

What the Screen Displays

This screen has important JetMap HD information and controls for
selecting the on-board Flight Management System (FMS), viewing
the actual ARINC flight data, and specifying when to save ARINC
data to a log file. This log file can be returned to Honeywell for
troubleshooting information.

Select FMS – It is critical that the correct FMS is chosen so that

correct calculations are performed on the ARINC 429 flight data
coming from the aircraft. If you do not see your FMS listed or you are
not sure it is the correct FMS, check the MIU Installation Manual PN
762-5164-001 for more details or contact the Customer Care Center.
It is important that JetMap HD be connected to the proper bus or
busses. Some aircraft require three or more busses to provide all the
necessary data.
Capture Input Data - Set to a value of On to save ARINC data to
the Solid State Drive (SSD) in the primary SSD bay located behind
the Maintenance Access Panel on the MIU. Use a USB key with the
correct instruction files to remove the ARINC log files. These files
can be sent to Honeywell for analysis of problems that may have
been experienced with the displayed flight data.
ARINC Monitor - Use this sub-screen to view the hexadecimal
ARINC flight data. The hexadecimal data is used by maintenance
personnel to verify that correct ARINC labels are being received by
JetMap HD. The data can be used as a troubleshooting aid when
speaking to Honeywell engineers about problems with the displayed
flight data. The ARINC labels are the three-digit numbers in front of
the colon. The actual hex data follows. See Figure 11-48.

Input Select - Only Enables or Disables Content downloading.

Content can also be completely disabled by selecting "Fetch
Disabled" from the "Connection Enable" option of System Settings 1
page which is also where the hardware source for satellite
connection to the Internet is chosen.
Content Configuration- Allows the user to select each item of the
Content download to Off or a periodic refresh period of 1:00 hr to
10:00 hrs in 10 minute increments by selecting the right or left Setup
Menu selection. Content modes are: Business, News, Sports, and
Weather overlay (cloud coverage). Setting the Satellite Weather
refresh period applies to all regions selected as On only. Specific
regions can be selected to Off as well. If an item is selected as Off
and a view is selected for display that uses that data then it will be
identified as "No Content Available" on the affected views with the
exception of Satellite overlay. Setting Satellite Weather to Off omits
the grayscale cloud overlay data and applies to all regions
regardless of their on/off state.
The Weather Source setting is used to select the source of the flight
deck video output of WINN Weather and for downloading the
grayscale cloud data for the Cabin Map Weather Overlay view.
• GDC utilizes an internet connection for data provided over
either an Iridium channel 1 device or an Ethernet connection
through a High Speed Data SATCOM system.
• XM utilizes an XM Weather receiver and antenna. (XM
requires an external XM receiver connected to the MIU RS-
422 input). For selecting the Connection Enable source see
System Settings 1 Configuration section on page 11-72.

SPARES OR “ALIEN” DEVICES

Installation of a non native device to the system initiates a “Master
Load” of the device. The Master Device contains the Master Loader
software and is the OST or Select 200 PCU that is functional and
has the lowest numerical value location ID. The Master Load can
take from 15 minutes up to one hour to complete depending on how
many files are uploaded.

Figure 12-6: Configuration Missing

Master Devices are identified by the 720-xxxx-xxx and lowest ID

number of that device. The Ovation Select system has a redundant
Master Loader in the event of a Master being removed.

CAUTION: Bringing in a master device with a

master loader from another aircraft will cause it to load
the current aircraft with its configuration if the device is
connected at initial power up. This is only recovered by
downloading an aircraft specific Master Loader software
package and uploading it to the Master Device.

An alien device that includes an HD-AVI, HD-AVO, Blu-ray or

monitors WILL require a system security event and issuance of a
security key to the alien. Displays are void of video during the
system security event. The system security event can take up to 15
minutes to complete. Command and control of the Ovation Select
system remains unaffected during the system security event.

15. AV BRIEFER

Figure 15-1: AV Briefer Controller

DESCRIPTION
The Audio Visual Briefer (AV Briefer) Controller, HPN 990-5750-xxx,
is one component of the Honeywell Ovation Select environment. It is
a hard-mount accessory designed to manage the operation of the
audio/video (A/V) briefing functionality embedded in the Honeywell
MIU moving map system.
Operation of the AV Briefer Controller is primarily governed by
cockpit personnel via the user interface. Additionally, the cockpit
personal can update the time to destination and destination for
display on the moving map if FMS Aeronautical Radio Incorporated
(ARINC) 429 labels are not available for these data items.
AV BRIEFER CONTROLLER POWER
The A/V Briefer Controller (see Figure 15-1) is hardwired into the
aircraft power system and has no independent on/off switch. It is
automatically turned on whenever the aircraft electrical system is
turned on, and it is automatically turned off whenever the aircraft
electrical system is turned off.
Dimming of the display is controlled by a variable voltage input
provided by the aircraft on one of several available input pins on the
AV Briefer Controller. The AV Briefer Controller is programmed to
respond to this variable voltage according to a configurable scaling.
Under normal circumstances, the user has no need to manually shut
down the AV Briefer Controller separate from the electrical system;
but should that need arise, the unit can be shut down by pulling the
appropriate circuit breaker. Manually shutting down the AV Briefer
Controller in this manner should only be accomplished by a crew
member.
Note: Graphics may change slightly from aircraft to aircraft.

AV BRIEFER CONTROLLER CONTROLS

LED Display
The AV Briefer Controller provides a 16-character LED display which
provides a scroll-through menu to select available features.
Selection Knob
A selection knob is mounted on the front panel of the AV Briefer. The
selection knob allows the cockpit crew to select:
• Passenger briefings
• Moving map display items.
To make a selection, rotate the selection knob left or right until the
required menu or briefing shows on the LED display.
Push the selection knob to select the displayed briefing or sub
menu.
Push the selection knob a second time to cancel or stop a briefing
that is in progress.

AV BRIEFER CONTROLLER OPERATION

Initiating a Passenger Briefing
Initiate a passenger briefing from the Select Briefing menu as
follows:
1. Rotate the selection knob in either direction until SELECT
BRIEFING is displayed on the LED display as shown in the
figure below.
2. Push the selection knob to select the menu option.
3. Rotate the selection knob in either direction until the desired
briefing shows on the LED Display.
4. Push the selection knob to select and start the briefing. The
name of the briefing flashes on the LED display during
presentation of the briefing.

Figure 15-3: Select Briefings Menu

When a passenger briefing is initiated, the following events typically

occur (however, the exact sequence and nature of events depend on
the programming of the MIU and other devices, and may not follow
the example below):
1. Cabin chimes are activated to call passenger attention to the
briefing.
2. The entertainment system audio and video is interrupted.
3. The briefing starts.
4. Upon completion of the briefing, audio and video are
restored.
NOTE: It is also possible to have audio-only briefings in which only
the audio is interrupted.

Note: Graphics may change slightly from aircraft to aircraft.

Setting the Destination City

This functionality is intended for aircraft with a Flight Management
Computer (FMC) which does not transmit the flight plan on the
ARINC 429 Bus, or for situations when the pilot wants to display a
destination city other than the one that was entered into the FMC as
the end point of the flight plan.
The destination city is entered from the Destination menu as follows.
1. Rotate the selection knob in either direction until
DESTINATION is displayed on the LED display as shown
below.

Figure 15-5: Select Destination

2. Push the selection knob to select the menu option. A four

character field shows to the right of the word DESTINATION
with a cursor blinking at the first position as shown below.

Note: Graphics may change slightly from aircraft to aircraft.

Figure 15-6: Enter ICAO Destination

3. Rotate the selection knob in either direction to select the first

letter of the four character International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO) destination identifier.
4. Push the selection knob to select the letter.
5. Repeat the process for each letter.
After the fourth letter is entered, “SEND DEST ?” is displayed for ten
seconds as shown below.

Figure 15-7: Send Dest to MIU

If you push the selection knob within ten seconds, the ICAO
destination is sent to the MIU and the Destination Menu shows the
ICAO. The MIU draws a route line on the maps to the new
destination.
If there is no FMS route received by the MIU then the route will be a
straight line from aircraft to the ICAO entered. If there is a route
already being displayed then the new route will add a route segment
from the destination coming from the FMS to the destination entered
on the AV Briefer.
The city name associated with the ICAO identifier will be displayed
on the information page if "Destination City (AV Briefer)" has been
configured for display.
Setting the Destination ICAO has no effect on the "Destination City"
Info Item because that ONLY comes from the FMS. The ICAO
entered on the AV Briefer will be shown if "Destination Airport ICAO"

Note: Graphics may change slightly from aircraft to aircraft.

has been configured as an info item to be displayed and there is no

FMS data being received over labels 304 and 305. Also, if
"Destination Airport Name" is selected for display on the information
pages, the name of the airport will be displayed that is associated
with the ICAO entered.
Note: The "Arrival Time" info page item is affected by other
combinations of sources of Time To Destination and ICAO.
Please See Table 11-2 in the MIU section for details.
Once a destination is entered and there is no flashing cursor over
one of the four ICAO characters, further rotation of the selector knob
selects among the other main menu items.

Setting the Time to Destination

Enter the destination city from the TM TO DEST 00:00 menu (see
Figure 15-8).
1. Rotate the selection knob in either direction until TM TO DEST
00:00 is displayed on the LED display as shown below. Push the
selection knob. The cursor flashes on the first zero which is for tens
of hours.

Figure 15-8: Time to Destination Menu

2. Rotate the selection knob in either direction to select the desired

number.
3. Push the selection knob to select the number.
4. Repeat the procedure for hours, tens of minutes, and minutes,
respectively.
Once a time is entered, further rotation of the selector knob selects
among the other main menu items. The time to destination that was
entered by the pilot, counts down on the LED display according to an
internal clock.
The AV Briefer Controller entered time is available on one of the
information pages if it was selected on the MIU configuration menus.
Note: Graphics may change slightly from aircraft to aircraft.

Ovation Select Cabin Management System Operating Instructions

This manually-entered time does not interact with any information

coming from the aircraft FMC. There are two other selectable MIU
Info page items for displaying time to destination. The first one
displays the value of the actual time to destination ARINC 429 label
coming from the FMC, and the second one is calculated based on
speed and distance ARINC 429 information from the FMC. Although
all three could be configured to be displayed, the intent is that only
one of the three is used.
Three options are necessary because some FMCs do not output the
necessary ARINC 429 data, so it must either be calculated by the
MIU or manually entered.
The AV Briefer Controller entered time does NOT override FMC
Time to Destination display options.

Note: Graphics may change slightly from aircraft to aircraft.
