The Conduction Rate Equation

General form of Fourier’s Law:

Heat flux Thermal conductivity Temperature gradient

W/m2 W/m  K °C/m or K/m

dT T −T
qx = −k = −k 2 1
dx L

T1 − T2
qx = k

Heat rate (W): qx = qx  A

The Conduction Rate Equation

 Recognizing that the heat flux is a vector quantity,

we can write a more general statement of the
conduction rate equation (Fourier’s Law) as
follows:
The Thermal Properties of Matter

 Thermal Conductivity:
A measure of a material’s ability to transfer thermal
energy by conduction. Ksolids > Kliquid >Kgases
Thermal Diffusivity: A measure of a material’s ability
to respond to changes in its thermal environment.
