I- INTRODUCTION
Synonyms play an important role in both English and Vietnamese meanings by
providing a linguistic alternative that conveys similar meanings. Although these
languages have different structures and cultural contexts, they share the common
characteristics of using synonyms to enhance communication and expression. This
introduction focuses on the similarities and differences in the application and cultural
nuances of synonyms used in English and Vietnamese semantics.
Synonyms in both English and Vietnamese semantics serve a similar purpose, providing
alternatives that convey similar meanings but may differ in nuances. Here's a

SEMANTICS
2.1.English Semantics:
Synonyms in English offer variation in vocabulary, allowing speakers and writers to
choose words based on tone, formality, context, and specificity.
English synonyms can be found in various contexts, including literature, academic
writing, everyday conversation, and specialized fields like science or law.
Examples of English synonyms include "big" and "large," "happy" and "joyful," "begin"
and "commence."
2.2.Vietnamese Semantics:
Synonyms in Vietnamese also provide alternatives for expressing similar ideas, though
the language may offer more nuanced distinctions based on tone, formality, and regional
dialects.
Vietnamese synonyms can be found in literature, journalism, informal communication,
and professional settings.
Examples of Vietnamese synonyms include "lớn" and "to," "vui" and "vui vẻ," "bắt đầu"
and "khởi đầu."
Synonyms play a crucial role in both English and Vietnamese semantics, although there
are notable differences in how they function and are utilized in each language. Here's a
comparison between synonyms in English and Vietnamese semantics:

III-DISTINCTION BETWEEN TRUE SYNONYMY AND PARTIAL


SYNONYMY
The distinction between true synonymy and partial synonymy lies in the degree of
overlap in meaning between words.
True synonymy refers to a relationship between words where they have exactly the same
meaning in all contexts and can be freely substituted for each other without any change
in meaning. In other words, true synonyms are identical in meaning in all contexts and
are interchangeable without altering the sense of the sentence. However, true synonyms
are relatively rare in natural language, and many words that are considered synonyms
may have subtle differences in meaning or connotation.
On the other hand, partial synonymy refers to a relationship between words where they
share some aspects of meaning but also have differences in meaning or usage in certain
contexts. Partial synonyms may overlap in meaning in some contexts but not in others.
They can be used interchangeably in some situations, but there may be nuances or shades
of meaning that distinguish one word from another. Partial synonymy allows for greater
flexibility in language use and offers speakers a range of options to express themselves
more precisely or emphatically.

VIETNAMESE SEMANTICS

Both English and Vietnamese languages have synonyms, which are words or phrases

Vietnamese, while having a rich linguistic heritage, may have a more limited vocabulary
compared to English, resulting in fewer synonyms for certain concepts.

In English, synonyms may have subtle differences in meaning, connotation, or usage,
allowing speakers to choose words that best fit the context or tone of their
communication.
Vietnamese synonyms may also exhibit nuanced differences in meaning or usage,
although the semantic range may be narrower compared to English due to the linguistic
structure and cultural influences.
3.4.Cultural and Contextual Differences:
Synonyms in English and Vietnamese may reflect cultural values, social norms, and
historical contexts unique to each language and culture.
The selection and usage of synonyms may vary depending on the social setting,
formality, audience, and regional dialects in both languages.

Learning synonyms is essential for language learners in both English and Vietnamese
