Most of us think we are good listeners. Unfortunately, the truth is that we are usually too busy thinking of our next response
to really hear what others are saying. Good listeners don't assume they know or understand a situation before hearing
someone out. They listen, pay attention to the facts of the situation and analyze the emotions involved. To be actively
listening you must focus on both the words that someone is saying and the nonverbal signs that the speaker is trying to
convey.

Activity: For each skill, rate yourself: S for strength, O for OK or N for I need to work on it.

1. When I am being talked to, I make eye contact. _____

2. I watch the speaker's facial expressions and try to understand him/her. _____
3. When someone is speaking to me, I nod and say things like "OK" and "uh-huh" Occasionally, so the speaker sees
that I am paying attention. _____
4. I listen trying to understand the speaker's point of view. _____
5. I do not interrupt the speaker. _____
6. I wait for the speaker to make a pause before I ask for clarification. _____
7. I am not distracted by anything; the speaker has my full attention. _____
8. I try to remember the speaker's important points. _____
9. I repeat points back during a conversation to be sure I am understanding. _____

-What happened after adding an adverb? -It changed the initial sentence

- What is and adverb? - is a descriptive word that modifies or qualifies a

verb, adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs
express a time, place, manner, degree, or frequency.
https://www.education.com/download/lesson-plan/adverb-basics/adverb-basics.pdf

Adverbs can add more description to adjectives, verbs, or other adverbs expressing a location, time, manner, degree, or
frequency.
Location/Place
Adverbs of place illustrate where the verb is happening. It’s usually placed after the main verb or object, or at the
end of the sentence. Examples:
-
If you want to see the hot air balloon, you will have to go outside.2
- When she entered the classroom, she sat down. 2

Time
An adverb of time provides more information about when the action takes place. Adverbs of time are usually placed
at the beginning or end of a sentence. When it is very important to express when something
happened, we put it at the start of a sentence. Examples:
- We’ll go to the festival tomorrow. 2
- Yesterday, we played in the basketball tournament. 2
- She’ll eventually finish studying and go to university. 2

Manner
Adverbs of manner provide more information about how a verb is done. Adverbs of manner are probably the most
common of all adverbs. They’re easy to recognize since most of them end in –ly.
- The cat runs quickly. 2
- She plays the violin terribly. 2
- The horse moved fast. 2
- She plays the piano well. 2
Degree
Adverbs of degree tell the level or intensity of a verb, adjective, or even another adverb.
- He’s very good at playing the piano. 2
- She’s almost always late arriving at school. 2
- It’s pretty interesting to see the history of China. 2
- The English test was extremely difficult. 2
- When he wears his running shoes, he moves more quickly among everyone. 2

8
Frequency
Adverbs of frequency tell how often the verb occurs. They’re often placed directly before the main verb of
a sentence.
- I usually go to the gym on weekends. 2
- She always wake up at 7:00 am. 2
- The family rarely eat brown rice for dinner. 2
- I never take sick days. 2

- He was rather disturbed by the images of the war. (bastante)

Making an apple pie

Today I helped my grandma cook dinner. First, we made the crust and placed it cautiously on the pan. Then, we carefully
cut the apples and slowly filled the pan with the apple slices. Next, my grandma gently poured some brown sugar. I
eagerly waited for my next job, which was to gently sprinkle some ground cinnamon on the apples. But, I accidentally
poured in too much cinnamon. I quietly told my grandma my mistake, and she sweetly told me, as a child, she had
coincidently made the same mistake. After that, we patiently placed the top crust over the filling. Then, my grandma
delicately sprinkled some sugar on the crust. Finally, we put the pie into the oven.

A Very Different Summer

Last summer Kevin, his brothers and cousins had very interesting holidays. They went camping in the mountains. The
camping ground offered a wide variety of recreational activities, cooking facilities, bathrooms with bathing facilities,
and a playground for the children, as well as inspiring views of the mountains. They spent a wonderful time. They
usually woke up early in the morning with the birds singing and they got up feeling flesh. Before breakfast, they went
for a walk. During the day they played cards, they swam in the river, they played guitar or listened to music while
roasting marshmallows over the campfire. They went fishing a couple of times. They even went horseback riding
some days. They sometimes went to the village, where they bought what they needed. They had a lot of fun.

B. Read Ideas to reduce pollution

We all have heard about pollution in the air, in the water, in the land, but what do we do to reduce pollution? Here
you have some things you can do to help the place where you live.
Everything we do, or we don’t, has an effect on the environment. When we become aware
of this and choose the right things, we are part of the solutions, for example:

- Reduce, or even stop smoking. And please don’t throw your butts on the
ground because they are not biodegradable. They can remain for up to 25
years on the ground, leaking chemical into the environment.
- Keep your car in good running condition to avoid emissions and try to share a

So / Such
ride or carpool. You can even think about driving an electric or hybrid car. Whenever possible, walk or
ride a bicycle.
- Remember and practice the 3 Rs of solid waste management:
reduce, reuse and recycle.
- You can also start composting leave and clippings from your yard and food
scraps from your kitchen to reduce waste while improving your soil. You
can even pick your neighbors’ scraps and sell your own organic fertilizer.
- The sun and wind help us to dry laundry minimizing our use of gas or
electricity when we use a dryer. Open the windows instead of turning on
the air conditioner. Think about wearing warm clothes and try to avoid heaters whenever it is possible.
- Check the possible places at home where you can save or recycle water.
You can collect rain water and use it to clean your home.
- Use and buy products made with biodegradable materials. Avoid plastic
and bring a bag when you shop. Don’t ask for more plastic bags.
- If it is possible for you , plant more tree. They clean the air, provide
oxygen, and make the place where you live more harmonious. Take care
of plants near your house and pick up your pet’s waste.
- You can also start an anti-liter campaign in your community. Ask older people for help and place
trashcans in strategic places so everybody can throw garbage in the appropriated places.

C. Write and discuss 3 things you already do to reduce pollution at home, at school and in your city:

A. Read
Read this conversation and check the words in bold.

Tom: So, you are reading the news reports. What's new?
Beida: You have no idea how much information there is about world issues; global
warming, too much pollution, not enough recycling, and so on. There are so
many reports to choose from that I wouldn't finish. Pollution is getting too
dangerous for everyone, and we haven't taken enough steps to fight it.
Unluckily, I don't have enough time to read all these reports. I wish I could.
Tom: I don't like reading those reports because many of them are simply fake; they're just lies, can't you see?
Beida: How can you be so sure about it? I think too many people believe it, and they think nothing is wrong. The
truth is that there are thousands of people who are really willing to make a real change.
Tom: You sound like you are the owner of truth ... ha, ha!
Beida: You can laugh if you want to, but if you sat down for a couple of hours, you would know that there are
enough sites and enough intormation you can use to do research about every single issue in this planet. You
know I go green, and I'm making the necessary changes to contribute. There might be too many people who
don't want to change, but there are many more who want to do exactly the opposite.
Tom: You may be right, but I'm not interested enough in these issues to spend time reading when I can simply
enjoy life as it is. Accept it! There are also many people who don't want to get
involved.
Beida: I think you are too blind to see the truth in this moment, but if I give
you enough information to know what is really happening, you'll change your
mind. You can't deny Greta Thunberg is catching people's attention with her
speeches. There might not be enough people now, but with time, there will
be more than enough to help save our planet.
Tom: Cool!

Finn And sentences with enough are sometimes followed by to and a verb.
