Answer all questions.

1. For a bronze alloy, the stress at which plastic deformation begins is 275 MPa,
and the modulus of elasticity is 115 GPa.
a) What maximum load may be applied to a specimen with a cross-
sectional area of 325 mm2 without plastic deformation?
b) If the original specimen length is 115 mm, what is the maximum length
to which it may be stretched without causing plastic deformation?

2. Figure 1 shows the stress-strain curve of a cylindrical steel alloy specimen.

Consider a cylindrical specimen of a steel alloy 10.0 mm in diameter and 75
mm long that is pulled in tension. Determine its elongation when a load of
20,000 N is applied.

3. Consider a cylindrical specimen of some metal alloy that has a diameter of 8
mm. A tensile force of 1000 N produces an elastic reduction in diameter of
2.8 x 10-4 mm. Compute the modulus of elasticity for this alloy, given that
Poisson’s ratio is 0.30.

4. A cylindrical aluminium specimen with an original diameter of 12.8 mm and a

gauge length of 50.80 mm is pulled in tension until a fracture occurs. The
diameter at the point of fracture is 10.11 mm and the fractured gauge length is
55.75 mm. Calculate the ductility in terms of percent reduction in area and
percent elongation.

5. A force of 100,000 N is applied to a 10 mm × 20 mm iron bar having a yield

strength of 400 MPa and a tensile strength of 480 MPa. Determine whether the
bar will plastically deform and whether the bar will experience necking.

6. As a material scientist, you are required to propose a possible material to be

applied for your new project. The material must be in a cylindrical rod with a
diameter of 10 mm and 100 mm long. This material will be deformed using a
tensile test for a maximum load of 27,500 N. The most important criteria need
to be taken in your consideration is the material must not experience either
plastic deformation or a diameter reduction of more than 9 × 10−3 mm. Based
on materials listed in Table 1, which are possible candidates? Justify your
choice(s).

Alloy Modulus of Yield Strength Poisson Ratio
Elasticity (GPa) (MPa)
A 70 200 0.33
B 150 300 0.34
C 207 400 0.30
D 107 650 0.34

7. Determine the density of BCC tantalum, which has a lattice parameter of

0.2866 nm. Given that Avogadro’s number is 6.0231023 atoms/mol.
8. What length of an alloy wire of resistivity and diameter 0.50 mm
is required to make a standard 6.0 resistor?

9. The heating element of a hairdryer is made of coiled nichrome wire. The

diameter of the wire is 0.46 mm and the length of the wire is 7.3 m. Calculate
the resistance of the element at 0°C. The resistivity of nichrome is

10. The copper track on a printed circuit board is made from copper foil 35 mm
thick. The width of the track is 0.16 cm and the resistivity of copper is
. What is the resistance of 1 cm of track?

11. Iridium has an atomic radius of 136 pm, an FCC structure, and an atomic
weight of 192.22 g/mol.
a) Determine the lattice parameter of FCC iridium.
b) Determine the theoretical density of iridium.

following in Figure 2.

13. BCC Mo is placed in an X-ray diffractometer using an X-ray with λ = 0.1789

nm. Diffraction from {110} planes was obtained at 2θ = 50.126°. Calculate the
lattice constant, a.

14. Table 2 shows the electrical characteristics that have been determined for both
intrinsic and p-type extrinsic Gallium Antimonide (GaSb) at room
temperature. Calculate the electron and hole mobilities of Gallium
Antimonide.
