Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe
their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your
story.

All my life, I have always been obsessed with computers, especially during my elementary school
days. I would sit beside my father (a graphic arts designer at the time) inside his small office in our
home and watch him use CorelDraw and Adobe Photoshop to design flyers for some of his clients
during the weekend, especially on Saturdays. However, my interest and curiosity about how the
CorelDraw application was created to design images grew, and it became obvious to me that I had
to study software engineering to achieve my dreams of creating apps.

Later in high school, my passion was to build apps and websites, and I started off by enrolling in
my school's coding club. Thereafter, I started using my own laptop to self-study by watching
YouTube videos of how to write codes after school since my high school was a boarding school.
From then onwards, I have made it my lifelong ambition to pursue a career in Software
Engineering. I am particularly inspired and motivated to become a Software Engineer after reading
extensively about how Mark Zuckerberg built Facebook from his dorm room at Harvard University
to connect Harvard students with one another using his skill as a Software Engineer/Computer
Programmer. Hence, Mark Zuckerberg is a motivational factor for me in the world of Software
Engineering, but my greatest role model has always been my father as he is a firm believer in my
dreams of becoming a successful Software Engineer.

However, aside from pursuing a degree in Software Engineering, my other interest is acting and
producing movies. My acting journey began when I was in elementary school. During my
elementary school days, I was given several roles to act, in which I interpreted well to the best of
my abilities. My parents were extremely proud of me because they felt I was taking a huge step in
the right direction. When I got to High school, I joined the Drama club and I auditioned to play
many important roles such as a Prince in one of my school's greatest performances (Moremi
Ajasoro). It was a stage performance and I was able to interpret my role perfectly to the best of
my ability.

Aside from academics and acting, I am an eloquent speaker and I have spoken in front of wide
audiences, including several assemblies and at Atlantic Hall Muslim Community Mosque where I
regularly lead the Juma'at Service Prayer. I was also the Library Prefect and the leader of the A-
Hall Book Club. As the Library Prefect, I helped to make the school library more technologically
advanced and encouraged the use of more E-books by students. I was also the Coordinator of the
Muslim community at my school.

My name is Adetomiwa Farouk Makanjuola. I am 15 years old, and I would like to apply to this
prestigious institution to study Computer Science/Software Engineering. I graduated High School
in July 2023 with a 3.65 CGPA out of 4.0. I love playing football, volleyball, and table tennis. I also
love playing Chess and Monopoly during my leisure time because it helps me keep calm and
focused.

However, in a bid to kick-start my journey in Software Engineering, I am currently enrolled at New


Horizons Systems Solutions (an information technology training provider) here in Lagos Nigeria
for a "Full Stack Software and Web Development". My coursework entails the use of HTML, CSS,
JavaScript, C++, PHP, and Java. Presently, I can confidently use all of these languages to design or
create a website.

In public, I am a very tolerant person who respect other people's views and opinions. I firmly
believe that anyone can achieve any feat in life irrespective of their status or background. I aim to
be an inspiration and an outstanding role model to every young person around the world.

Campus Statement

When I was in elementary school, I remembered vividly that I am used to sitting beside my father
(a graphic arts designer at the time) inside his small office in our home and watch him use
CorelDraw and Adobe Photoshop to design flyers for some of his clients during the weekend,
especially on Saturdays. From then onwards, my interest and curiosity about how the CorelDraw
application was created to design was born, and it became obvious to me that I had to study
software engineering to achieve my dreams.

progress in many other disciplines and ultimately to changes in human society, which will allow
me to solve complex and challenging problems in many fields due to the increasing centrality of
computer science in academic disciplines and society such as data science, artificial intelligence,
programming languages, theoretical computer science, machine learning, and cybersecurity. This
will help me further build my communication skills, teamwork, and problem-solving skills and
acquire the necessary technical skills for positions in computing throughout society.

Consequently, UW-Madison has a dynamic combination of fundamental courses and enthralling


electives such as ‘Introduction to Software Security’, allowing me to apply my software security
proficiency to resolve complex global issues such as technological disparity. By exploring the
COMP SCI/E C E 506 — Software Engineering - UW-Madison Course, I will put my programming
and problem-solving skills to use, tackling complex and challenging technical problems, and
pushing my intellectual abilities to higher stakes.

Furthermore, I will gain first-hand experience in other courses that include graphics and animation,
web programming, competitive programming, cryptography and security, networks, software
engineering, distributed systems, information systems, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics,
which will help broaden my knowledge and prepare me to better solve complex and challenging

problems in many fields.

I am particularly intrigued by UW-Madison's 'Introduction to Artificial Intelligence' course, which I


believe will enhance my abilities to apply machine learning techniques to gain insight from large
data sets. I am drawn to this course because I enjoy creating applications. During my high school
days, I worked on various small projects using HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, PYTHON, and other
programming languages. By majoring in computer science, I hope to build a foundation in
Software Security, Mobile Systems and Applications, Artificial Intelligence and Software
Engineering, which will help bring a change into the digital landscape. I aim to create a life-
changing application someday, and I believe that UW-Madison is the best institution to help me
achieve this dream!
