HOW TO
IMPROVE YOUR

THUMBNAILS

TO POWER UP
YOUR PORTFOLIO
2

The Power of
The Thumbnail
One of the most overlooked aspects
of a good portfolio is the thumbnail.
Did you know that having an Artstation portfolio
with exciting thumbnails can increase the
likelihood that someone will stay and look
through your portfolio?

This can greatly improve your chances of

employment if recruiters are willing and
motivated to dig through your work.

If you don’t take your time carefully thinking

about your thumbnail, then you risk losing your
audience to your competition.

This guide is designed to show you secrets of

creating exciting thumbnails and thus a better,
well presented portfolio.

YOUR PORTFOLIO
IS A BEAUTIFUL QUILT
You should think of your portfolio like your grandmothers quilt.

A quilt is made up of small square pieces of fabric .The more

beautiful the squares the more beautiful the overall quilt.

Likewise, your Artstation portfolio is only as beautiful as your

thumbnails, the more exciting and interesting you make them
the more appealing your overall portfolio will be.

USE LOGOS
Do a little experiment. Go onto Artstation right now and take a look
at the trending section. Notice how your eye is drawn to the
thumbnails with the logos?

People love brands and graphic logos, especially if they belong to

their favorite game, movie or television series.

Use this to your advantage to capture attention. For example, If you

are posting an Unreal Engine environment, then use the UE4 logo. If
you are a modeling a prop based on something from real life, then
use the manufacturers logo.

Logo’s can make your otherwise boring thumbnail much more

interesting

USE COMPOSITION
TECHNIQUES
As an artist you should always be aware and educated
about basic image composition.
Thumbnails that demonstrate attention to composition have higher click rates
than those that don’t. Taking time to implement some basic composition strategies
can make your thumbnails more enjoyable to look at and will get you noticed.

USE BRIGHT COLORS

OK, let’s do another little Artstation portfolio experiment. Take another look at the
artstation trending section, what other thumbnails grab your attention?

Thumbnails with vibrant, bright, electric, fun and exciting colors are another great way
for your portfolio piece to get noticed. Pull up a color wheel and see what colors vibe
together when you are planning your thumbnail.

A big mistake many junior artists make is using very boring, and drab colors in their
thumbnails.

If you are posting a grey-scale clay render, adding a bright

color as a background can really make it pop! Also consider
making the grey material a bright color instead like in this
example.>>>

SHOW ONLY PART

OF THE
ARTWORK
Another great way to increase clicks and
create a bit of mystery is to crop your
thumbnails so they only show an interesting
part of your art.

This will make your audience curious and

cause them to click the thumbnail to see
more! A great way to keep recruiters looking.

HIGH CONTRAST IMAGES

Another little trick you can implement to improve your thumbnails is cranking up the
contrast a bit. As you can see in the above examples it really helps make the image a lot
more dramatic. Dramatic images are exciting and give off a sense of mystery and
storytelling.

According to an experiment run on Polycount, Artstation thumbnails with clear contrast

have a higher chance to be clicked on than thumbnails which don’t.
