3.4 Rack mounting the server

This section describes how to rack mount your server. There are two types of rack
mounting configurations:

• Four-post slide rail mount

• Two- or four-post hard mount

3.4.1 Four-post slide rail mount

Use this type of rack mount if you are placing your server in a data center cabinet rack. Lift and
carefully place your server onto a stable work surface. Then, using the parts from your server
box, follow these general steps.

NOTE: Two people are required to carry the server and place it into the rack rails.

To rail mount the server:

1. Find the rail kit, which contains two slide rails, and attach slides to the server.

Figure 1: Attach slides to server

2. Attach the rails to the rack post by either clipping them in or screwing them in. If holes
in the rack posts are square, clip in the rails. If the holes are round or too small for clips,
remove the clips from the rails and screw them (rails) into the rack posts.

Powering on and initial configuration Powering on
Getting Started

3.8 Powering on and initial configuration

This section describes the steps needed to power on your QUANTiX SBC Q21 server(s), and
to configure IP addresses and host names, after physical setup is complete.

3.8.1 Powering on
To power on the server:

1. Plug in monitor (if using) to the power supply and into the primary Q21 server.
2. Press the power button on the front panel to turn on the server. Startup takes
approximately five minutes.
3. For the secondary HA server, repeat the previous steps.

When the server (or servers) have been powered on, the physical setup is complete.

3.8.2 Connecting to the server

Use a terminal emulator such as PuTTY to connect to the serial monitor port on the server.
Set the following parameters within the emulator to enable communication with the server: 8
data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, 9600 baud and no flow control.

Once connected login as “root” using the password for your system given to you by
GENBAND.

3.8.3 Assigning IP addresses

The server is typically connected to several different kinds of networks:

• Management—A private network used for administrative control and provisioning.

• Control—A dedicated network used with high-availability (HA) configurations for
exchanging synchronization and failover data.
• Signaling—One or two protected service networks used for the exchange of call setup
data. Signaling networks may consist of many virtual networks or VLANs layered on
top of a single link.
• Media—One or two distinct service networks used for the exchange of voice data. Like
signaling networks, VLAN layering can be used.
• Remote Management—An optional private network used for administrative
monitoring.

Consider your specific network environment to determine the appropriate IP addresses to use
for the server’s ethernet interfaces. This must be done for both servers in an HA configuration.

Powering on and initial configuration Assigning IP addresses
Getting Started

3.8.3.1 Configuring the RMM4 remote management port (optional)

The server comes equipped with the Intel RMM4 module. Accessing this module provides
capabilities such as system information, server health, configuration and remote control.

To configure the RMM4 IP address for the optional use of remote management support use
the following command:

ipmiutil lan -L 3 -e -f 3 -I <RMM4-ip-address> -S <mask> -G <gateway>

-u <account> -p <password>
where: <RMM4-ip-address>, <mask> and <gateway> respectively specify the port
IP address and netmask, and the IP gateway.
<account> and <password> specify the account user name and password.
For example, this command configures the RMM4 with the following network settings:
• Network address = 10.255.255.2
• Netmask = 255.255.255.252
• IP gateway = 10.255.255.1
• Account = “acctname”
• Password = “$temp” (If special characters are used in the password, it must be
enclosed in single quotes.)
ipmiutil lan -L 3 -e -f 3 -I 10.255.255.2 -S 255.255.255.252
-G 10.255.255.1 -u acctname -p ‘$temp’

To configure a VLAN, use the -h option in the command line.

A user guide for the module is available by searching “RMM4” on the Intel website. Onboard
help can be obtained with the following command:

ipmiutil lan -L 3 -?

To display the current settings of the RMM4 use the following command:

ipmiutil lan -L 3 -r

CAUTION
Use care when executing the ipmi command line and parameters. Errors
in the command format or parameters can result in unpredictable or
undesirable results.

3.8.3.2 Configuring the management, signaling and control interfaces

When configuring the management port (eth0) use the addresses and netmasks you recorded
in Table 4. For the control ports (eth1 and eth4) used in HA system configuration and signaling
ports (eth2 and eth3), the internal IP addresses listed in the table below are suggested.

Table 7 Suggested control and signaling IP addresses

Primary server port Secondary server port
Port
address address

eth1 169.254.200.1 /30 169.254.200.2 /30

eth2 127.0.1.1 /32 127.0.1.2 /32

eth3 127.0.2.1 /32 127.0.2.2 /32

eth4 (optional) 169.254.201.1 /30 169.254.201.2 /30

NOTE: Do not use 127.0.0.1, which is reserved for local loopback. If you are using GENView-
RSM in your network, the server’s signaling interfaces should not be on the same
network with the GENView-RSM management IP address.

You can configure bonded control links by connecting the two systems with two cables
connected to eth1 and eth4 and bonding the interfaces. The single bond0 interface can then
be assigned to an IP address.

When using bonded control links, the IP address for the combined interface is defined during
installation. Set up the bonded control interface during initial server installation. If you try to
add a bonded control interface after initial installation, it will fail.

NOTE: Do not use the Linux command ifconfig eth1 down to terminate the primary interface.
Using this command will cause both systems in a bonded interface to become active.

To configure the IP addresses you must use YaST. Once you are logged in, start YaST using
this command:

yast lan

CAUTION
Do not use Linux commands such as ifconfig to set up IP addresses
because the addresses will not persist when the system is restarted.
Use YaST to assign the necessary IP addresses to the server interfaces.

Use the TAB key to move forward and the Shift+TAB keys to move backward between
selectable items in modules. The arrow keys allow you to move up and down or left and right
within lists. Selectable modules and actions are displayed with a single highlighted letter.
Pressing ALT+highlighted letter together will execute the action or activate a menu item.

3.8.3.2.2 Assigning the management interface and internal IP address

Assign a static management network IP address (eth0). This is usually an address on a secure
LAN that is used to manage and configure the server. This connection is used for SSH,
GENView-RSM, DNS, and other internal network services. Both management interfaces in an
HA configuration must be on the same LAN and sub-network.

The configuration of the server from the factory will be similar to the one shown on the
Overview module of the Network Settings page in Figure 7.

Figure 7: Factory configuration

The server comes pre-configured with an IP address. You must first change the pre-configured
IP address and assign a static management network IP address to the management port
(eth0).

From the Overview module of the Network Settings page follow these steps to configure the
IP address for the management network port.

1. Navigate to the eth0 interface. The description of each interface, including the interface
name, is displayed in the gray information box when an interface is selected.
2. Press the ALT+i keys to select EDIT and configure the interface.
3. In the Network Card Setup dialog verify that Statically assigned IP Address is
selected with an “x” as shown in Figure 8.

3.8.4 Domain Name System (DNS)

The base GBLinux installation includes a pre-configured DNS server. To reduce the number
of name lookups generated by the server, the DNS server is configured as a forwarder, also
known as a name caching server. This means that DNS requests are first handled by the local
server (listening at 127.0.0.1 on the loopback interface). If the resolved address is cached, an
immediate response will be generated. If the request cannot be satisfied locally, it is forwarded
to an external DNS server.
