Name: ________________________________ Date: _____________________________
FACTS / TIPS:

DEFINITION:A machine is a device that is created by people to make work easier.

Machines help us to do things such as lifting and moving objects from one place to
another.

Simple Machines
The most basic machines are
called simple machines.
Simple machines change the
strength or direction of a force,
such as a push or pull.
The six types of simple
machines are:
 The inclined plane
 The wedge
 The lever
 The wheel and axle
 The screw
 The pulley.

Complex machinesare also

called compound machines. Two
or more simple machines work
together to form a complex
machine.
Examples of complex machine
are:
 Wheelbarrows
 Pencil sharpeners
 Crane
 Bulldozer
 Clippers
 Escalators

ON YOUR OWN:

1. A _______________ is a device that is created by people to make work easier.

2. Define the term “simple machine.”

4. Machines help us to do things such as _______________ and __________________
objects from one place to another.
5. A ________________________ machine is made up of two or more simple machines.
6. Another name for complex machines is ______________________ machines.
7. Two examples of complex machines are:

Parts of a pulley
A pulley consists of a grooved wheel mounted on a shaft and a rope or belt that runs
within the groove.

Parts of a wheel and axle

This simple machine consists of two basic parts. The large rounded part (the wheel)
and a smaller rounded rod (the axle). The wheel spins around the axle.

FACTS / TIPS:

DEFINITION:
Pulley
A pulley has grooved wheels and ropes or chains to raise, lower,
or move a load. The pulley changes the direction of the force
applied to one end of the rope e.g., by pulling down on one end
of the rope, a person can lift an object attached to the other end.

Examples of pulleys

 Wells use the pulley system to

hoist the bucket out of the well.
 Flagpoles use pulleys in order to
hoist the flag up or to bring it
down. You pull the string on the
pulley and the flag runs up or
down the pole.
 Blinds on windows operate using
a pulley system to move the blinds up and down. You pull the
cord on the blinds and the pulley system causes the blinds to
open or close.
 A crane is a type of pulley that is used in construction.
 Clothes lines also have pulleys.

ON YOUR OWN:

1. A pulley has grooved wheels and ropes or chains to

___________________ a load.

Study the picture on the right, then answer questions

2 and 3.
2. What will happen if the boy pulls on the end of
the rope he‟s holding?

3. The simple machine shown in the picture above can be found on

______________________ and ____________________.
MAKING A PULLEY
Materials needed
1. Wire hanger
2. Wire cutter
3. Empty thread spool
4. Thread
5. Paper puncher
6. Sanitary cup half filled with rice.

Procedure
1. Using a wire cutter, cut the bottom of a wire hanger directly in
the centre.
2. Place the empty thread spool onto one end of the wire, then
slide the other end into the spool from the opposite direction.
3. When the spool is secure on both sides of the wire hanger,
bend the ends down so that the spool stays in place.
4. Suspend the hanger from a hook or on a wall.
5. Using the paper puncher, punch holes into the sides of the cup.
6. Tie one end of a piece of string onto the cup, and thread the
other end of the string over the spool. (The string should be
around twice as long as the distance from the hanger to the
floor)
7. Pull the loose end of the string to lift the weight
