ABUTLI1S: Building Utilities

PLUMBING & SANITARY SYSTEMS
THE WATER TREATMENT PROCESS
WATER TREATMENT - conditions/treats water supply
to improve water quality, remove suspended solids by
filtration
KEY PROCESS: Surface Water
• Dilution: contaminants diluted to
reduced risks
• Coagulation and
• Flocculation: Chemicals
(coagulants) and/or filter added to
water, mixed in (flocculated)
• Settling: heavier items settle to the
bottom
• Filtration: granular medium (sand,
crushed anthracite coal, or activated
carbon)
• Disinfection: Disinfectants (chlorine,
chloramines ozone, ultraviolet light,
and chlorine dioxide)
KEY PROCESS: Surface Water
Other Chemical Treatments - adjust hardness or
softness, pH, and alkalinity.
•Fluoride added (dental health)
•Sodium hydroxide reduces corrosivity, extends life of
pipelines, storage tanks, plumbing systems
GROUNDWATER PROTECTION AND TREATMENT
Source Water Protection – "watershed protection”; natural
and engineered processes follow
GROUNDWATER PROTECTION AND TREATMENT
• Wellhead protection - critical
(preventing contamination of ground-
water supplies)
• Groundwater pumped out of an
aquifer; earth naturally provides
filtration of microscopic pathogens.
• Groundwater: iron and manganese
(occur naturally in the earth)
• Municipal Water Treatment (Granular
Activated Carbon - GAC) removal of
taste/odor compounds.
Water Testing
Water Quality Guideline - a water guideline level for a water constituent which does not
result in significant health risk and which ensures aesthetically acceptable water.
Standard Methods - Methods of analysis prescribed by American Public Health
Association, American Waterworks Association, Water Pollution Control Federation or
US Environmental Pollution Control Federation or USE environmental Protection
Agency; accepted by authority
Water Quality - used to define those bacteriological, chemical, physical, biological or
radiological characteristics which evaluates the acceptability of the water.
Water Testing

Minimum requirements BACTERIOLOGICAL QUALITY of drinking-water

a. All drinking water supplies (Level I, II, III, bottled water & emergency supplies).
b. Presence of E-Coli or Thermo-tolerant (fecal) coli-form bacteria - indicator of fecal
pollution
c. The detection suggests possible presence of organisms that can cause disease.
d. Water that free from E-Coli or Thermo-tolerant coli form bacteria is considered safe
