Anoa, also known as midget buffalo and saplutan, are a subgenus of Bubalus comprising two species
endemic to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia: the mountain anoa (Bubalus quarlesi) and the lowland
anoa (Bubalus depressicornis). Both live in undisturbed rainforest and are essentially miniature water
buffalo. They are similar in appearance to a deer, weighing 150 – 300 kg.
The key difference between the two species is the areas of habitat that is utilized on the islands. The
mountain anoa is found at higher elevations than its lowland counterpart and is found in the forested
mountainuous regions. The lowland anoa spends its time in the lower elevation areas and is also found in
core habitat of forested area. The habitat needs of both species can have some overlap and oftentimes the
two species are found in the same area. The key factor to where theay are found is core forested habitat
away from humans.
Both species of anoa have been classified as endangered since the 1960s and the populations continue to
decrease. Fewer than 5,000 animals of each species likely remain. Reasons for their decline include
hunting for hides, horns and meat by the local people and loss of habitat due to the advanceent of
settlement. Currently, hunting is the more serious factore in most areas.
The leading cause of their population decline is, in fact, hunting by th local villagers and not having
restrictions or proper management strategies. The one benefit is that villagers are open to communication
with researchers on their harvests and hunting practices. The second leading cause of population decline
is habitat loss. Illegal logging is a large issue due to the fact that both species prefer core forested habitat
that is far away from humans and the influences that come with them. By loging, humans create much
more frgamanted habitat and, therefore, a decrease in the area where the anoa can breed and live.

Long ago, there lived a woodcutter in a small village. He was sincere in his work and very honest. Every day, he
set out into the nearby forest to cut trees. He brought the woods back into the village and sold them out to a
merchant and earn his money. He earned just about enough to make a living, but he was satisfied with his simple
living.
One day, while cutting a tree near a river, his axe slipped out of his hand and fell into the river. The river was so
deep, he could not even think to retrieve it on his own. He only had one axe which was gone into the river. He
became a very worried thinking how he would be able to earn his living then! He was very sad and prayed to the
Goddess. He prayed sincerely so the Goddess appeared in front of him and asked, “What is the problem, my son?”
The woodcutter explained the problem and requested the Goddess to get his axe back.
The Goddess put her hand deep into the river and took out a silver axe and asked, “Is this your axe?” The
Woodcutter looked at the axe and said “No”. So the Goddess put her hand back deep into the water again and
showed a golden axe and asked, “Is this your axe?” The woodcutter looked at the axe and said “No”. The Goddess
said, “Take a look again Son, this is a very valuable golden axe, are you sure this is not yours?” The woodcutter
said, “No, It’s not mine. I can’t cut the trees with a golden axe. It’s not useful for me”.
The Goddess smiled and finally put her hand into the water again and took out his iron axe and asked, “Is this your
axe?” To this, the woodcutter said, “Yes! This is mine! Thank you!” The Goddess was very impressed with his
honesty so she gave him his iron axe and also other two axes as a reward for his honesty.
