RESEARCH QUESTIONS

METHODOLOGY
THE REASON WHY WE CHOOSE THIS TOPIC
Oral presentations are becoming increasingly
important for students
That skill is required in almost every course and in
university environments
Students had few opportunities to practice
presentations
Second-year HUFLIT students may lack skills in
presentation
Our research will provide proper solutions to address
these problems and help second-year students
overcome their difficulties.
LITERATURE REVIEW

1. Definition of oral presentation

2. Difficulties of oral presentation
3. Causes of the difficulties
DEFINITION

Jessica Cook (2018): ''An oral presentation is similar to giving a speech but is usually not just
a person behind a lectern. Visual aids and teaching tools are used to further enhance the
spoken words. An oral presentation can be given as an individual or as part of a group. It
also might add components of technology, such as a slide show, video clip, or audio
recording. ''
Inclusive Learning Community, Nanjing Internation School: ''An oral presentation is a
method of communicating information verbally supported by images, visual aids and/or
technology. The information can be delivered as group discussions, speeches, debates and
class presentations. Presentations can be delivered individually or as part of a group.''
Patricia Williamson, Academic Writing Skill (2021): ''An oral presentation differs from a
speech in that it usually has visual aids and may involve audience interaction; ideas are
both shown and explained. A speech, on the other hand, is a formal verbal discourse
addressing an audience, without visual aids and audience participation.''.
DEFINITION

To sum up, based on the three definitions above, we can see that the
common point of oral presentations is the use of verbal communication
along with supporting tools to create an utter presentation and also help
interaction with the audience.

2. Psychological factors

Mispronunciations can result in delusion, confusion, and ineffective
communication.
Harding.G(2019): “Clear pronunciation is a must for a good
presentation. It’s important for listeners to be able to understand and
catch your message easily and clearly. Particularly is the presentation
is training related.”
Burns (2003): “Even where learners produce minor inaccuracies in
vocabulary and grammar, they are more likely to communicate
effectively when they have good pronunciation and intonation”.
DIFFICULTIES OF ORAL PRESENTATION
2. Psychological factors
2.1 Self-confidence
A person with high self-confidence will easily do anything and get
a successful outcome. Self-confidence is essential in English oral
presentations since it diminishes students’ nervousness and fear
of speaking in the target language.

difficulties with speaking often have problems with their
motivation and self-confidence.
DIFFICULTIES OF ORAL PRESENTATION
2. Psychological factors
2.2 Dearth of motivation
Zua (2008): inspiration originates from within. Whatever the
learners' motivations, according to her, it will enhance their
enthusiasm for what they are studying.
DIFFICULTIES OF ORAL PRESENTATION
2. Psychological factors
2.3 Anxiety
Anxiety is a feeling of tension, apprehension, and nervousness
associated with the situation of learning a foreign language
(Horwitz et al. cited in Nascente, 2001).
Zaremba (2006): public speaking has been ranked as one of the
human top fears. People get nervous when they have to present
something in front of an audience. Taking it into consideration will
make your presentation more complete.
CAUSES OF THE DIFFICULTIES

1. Causes of Psychological factors

2. Causes of Linguistic factors
CAUSES OF THE DIFFICULTIES
1. Causes of Psychological factors
1.1 Lack Of Preparation Or Rehearsal
Not spending enough time practicing the speech can lead to a lot of
anxiety and nervousness. Without preparation, you cannot fully grasp
the content and the flow of the speech, leading to stumbling or
forgetting important points. A lack of preparation or rehearsal not
only affects your confidence but also affects your credibility and
performance. (Janek 2024)
CAUSES OF THE DIFFICULTIES
1. Causes of Psychological factors
1.2 Other factors
Students’ lack of confidence also deals with the lack of
encouragement from the teacher (Brown,2001)
Students are afraid of looking foolish in front of other people and
they are concerned about how other will see them (Kurtus, 2001)
CAUSES OF THE DIFFICULTIES
2. CAUSES OF LINGUISTIC FACTORS
1.1 Limited language exposure
Language exposure refers to the level of the learners contact with
the target language that they are learning or attempting to learn.
The words would be more familiar to you and you can use it
effectively, pronounce it more precisely.
CAUSES OF THE DIFFICULTIES
2. CAUSES OF LINGUISTIC FACTORS
1.2 Lack of practice
The lack of opportunities to practice oral presentations in their
language classes means that most high school students, and
many university students, do not get to experience the positive
impact that these types of activities can have on their language
ability. This can have a negative effect on their language
proficiency and their overall development as active participants
in, and members of, the English language community.(Gavin
Brooks 2015)
CAUSES OF THE DIFFICULTIES
2. CAUSES OF LINGUISTIC FACTORS
1.2 Other factors
(Riken Dawud Darmansyah, 2019) The vocabularies choosing in
speech while transferring content is pretty important to make your
speech straightforward and spotless.
The dissimilarity between English’s grammar and our mother
tongue’s grammar would result a grammar mistake when using.
RESEARCH GAPS
Firstly, although many previous studies have research on English
majored students at several cities but there is no study which is
undertaken in Hue University of foreign languages and
international studies.
Furthermore, most of the studies concentrated on the difficulties
of psychological factors, knowledge in oral presentation, while
our study also focus on the causes of it.
Lastly, there is still few studies that meticulously research on
language exposure.
