varnishes and coatings
- at the time of delivery for further processing in plants of the Daimler Group
- in coated condition in the body and major component area as well as for plastic
and other functional parts
The requirements for the test methods are specified in the material-specific DBL.

The paint test methods are used for

- laboratory tests, e.g. for basic examinations, initial tests, retests,
tests in the case of operational complaints
- process controls of the coating in Daimler Group plants.

4 General requirements

For safety requirements, homologation (in particular, exhaust emissions), and quality, the existing
statutory requirements and laws shall be complied with. In addition, the relevant requirements
of the Daimler Group apply.

All materials, procedures, processes, components, and systems shall conform to the current statutory
requirements regarding regulated substances and recyclability. For the relevant information with regard
to prohibited and declarable substances, refer to DBL 8585 and DBL 6714.

With regard to all coating materials, care shall be taken to ensure the lowest possible odor and smallest
possible content of volatile matter (e.g. solvents, plasticizers etc.).
Preparations/coating materials shall be marked in accordance with statutory regulations and provided
with the necessary information for transportation and use. In the event of use abroad, the regulations
and rules applicable to those countries shall also be observed.

5 General test specifications

5.1 Sampling, test panels

For sampling, pre-sampling inspection and sample preparation for testing and for the production of
test panels, the specifications of DIN EN ISO 15528, DIN EN ISO 1513 and DIN EN ISO 1514 apply.
The use of the following test panels shall be preferred unless noted or agreed otherwise:

- H-panel: steel paneling, zinc coated on both sides (zinc coat thickness 7,5-10 µm)
thickness 0,8 mm, dimensions: 500 x 200 mm, 200 x 100 mm
- F-panel: steel paneling, zinc coated on both sides (zinc coat thickness 7,5-10 µm)
thickness 0,75 mm, dimensions: 500 x 200 mm, 200 x 100 mm
- MBZE panel: steel sheet (MB test panel), zinc coated on both sides (zinc coat thickness 7,5-10 µm)
supplier: Voest from MBZE 1 (consecutive numbering of selected steel coil),
dimensions: 500 x 200 mm, 200 x 100 mm
- Aluminum paneling
AlMg 0,4 Si1,2 -B, thickness 1,15 mm, dimensions: 300 x 100 mm, 200 x 100 mm

In addition, as per agreement with the responsible department, tests shall also be carried out
on substrates which are used in the relevant part, e.g. plastics, composites, precoated materials.

5.2 Test layer thickness

The test layer thicknesses are dry-film thicknesses which are specified in the material-specific DBL.

5.3 Film thickness measurement

MBN 10483-1 applies for car body paintwork.
Otherwise the following specifications apply: DIN EN ISO 2064 and DIN EN ISO 3882.

5.3.1 Nondestructive
MBN 10483-1 applies for car body paintwork.
Otherwise the following specifications apply:
- Magnetic-induction method in accordance with DIN EN ISO 2808 Method 12A
- Eddy current method in accordance with DIN EN ISO 2808 Method 7D.

Function verification
Before the commencement of the measurement, the function of the film thickness measuring
instrument shall be verified using tested verification shims. The verification of the function shall
conform to the guidelines of the manufacturer of the measuring instrument. A ferromagnetic
standard and a verification shim shall be used for the purpose.

MBN 10494-1:2016-03, page 4

The part to be measured without coating (but with phosphating if applicable) shall be used as the zero
point. If components with different surface roughness values are measured, different memory locations
in the film thickness measuring instrument shall be allocated.
The selection of the verification shim shall be based on the film thickness (tolerance range) to be expected
in the process. For example: CDC 23 µm: calibration with film thickness shims of 13 µm (minimum film
thickness) and 25 µm (maximum film thickness). The film thickness measuring instrument shall
be calibrated using these three parameters. The verification shims shall approximate the minimum and
maximum layer thickness closely. The smaller the film thickness, the more precisely shall the verification
shim correspond to the film thickness profile.

5.3.2 Destructive/mechanical
MBN 10483-1 applies for car body paintwork.
Otherwise the following specifications apply:
- Wedge cut method in accordance with DIN 50986 and DIN EN ISO 2808 Method 6B.
- Cross-sectioning method in accordance with DIN EN ISO 2808 Method 6A.

5.4 Drying conditions

5.4.1 Oven drying

Refer to MBN 10531-1 for the drying conditions of the coating materials.
The drying time indicated includes the heating-up time of the substrate.
For drying, a heating oven shall be used which shall be monitored regularly by means of thermocouples.
Evidence of the object temperature shall be provided by means of appropriate auxiliary equipment
(documentation).

5.4.2 Air drying

The time required to reach the drying stage in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9117-5 specified
in the material-specific DBL when stored in standard atmosphere in accordance with DIN EN 23270
(23 ± 2 °C; 50 ± 5 % relative humidity) is determined. Accelerated drying by short-term heat application
at temperatures below 70 °C is indicated, where appropriate, in the material-specific DBL.

5.4.3 Heat exposure

For heat exposure, a heating oven shall be used which shall be checked at regular intervals
(documentation).
Unless specified otherwise in the material-specific DBL, the heat exposure shall be carried
out at (80 ± 3) °C for 48 hours.
For tests with thermal exposure, heating ovens in accordance with DIN 12880 shall be used.

5.5 Paint test time

The time at which the paint is tested depends upon the drying process, and should be chosen
as follows unless specified otherwise in the paint test specifications or material-specific DBL:
Air drying
48 hours after the drying stage specified in the material-specific DBL has been reached.
In the case of aqueous air-drying materials, 7 days after the drying stage specified in the
material-specific DBL has been reached.
Oven drying
No sooner than 1 hour after removal of the test panels from the heating oven.
Heat exposure
No sooner than 1 hour after removal of the test panels from the heating oven.
