Lab Report # 3

Objective:
To find the deformation in a simply supported beam with a central point load application, numerically
and analytically

Problem Statement:
To calculate the maximum deflection of 1.5 m long simply supported beam which has fixed support at
one end and roller at the other end. If this beam is loaded with uniformly distributed load of 5000N and
Young’s modulus of the material is 110000 N/mm2 while cross section of beam is square 50mm, do
simulation on ANSYS and compare results with hand calculations

Numerical Approach
Finite Element Analysis (FEA): You can use software like ANSYS to perform finite
element analysis. In FEA, you divide the beam into small elements, apply the load, and solve for
the deflection numerically using the principles of mechanics and numerical methods.

 Geometry Definition: Define the geometry of the beam (length, cross-sectional

dimensions).
 Material Properties: Specify material properties (modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio).
 Mesh Generation: Create a mesh of elements to discretize the beam geometry.
 Apply Boundary Conditions: Define supports at both ends of the beam and apply the
point load at the center.
 Solve: Use the finite element method to solve for the deflection of the beam.
 Post-Processing: Analyze the results to find the maximum deflection and stress
distribution.
