Notes for the teacher.

1. The Diagnostic Assessment can be administered one-on-one or to a group of at least 6


learners at a time.
2. Prepare well for the Diagnostic Assessment i.e. study the questions and make sure that
you have the required apparatus readily available i.e. counters, buttons, bottle tops,
etc. for the learner to use. Pack out the concrete counters for the learner to see and
manipulate.
3. Allow the learner to demonstrate, draw, talk about his/her thinking and to answer
optimally.
4. Write comments/ make notes of the learner’s verbal responses.
5. Make sure that the learner does not copy.
6. Give clear instructions always. Ask the learner to:
1. Tick (√) the box below the boy who is in between. (1)

2. Circle the box that shows the same number of stars as the number on the
number line. (1)

3. Draw 2 less bottle tops on the right hand side. (1)

4. How many?
Draw a triangle above the number that comes after 3 on the number line. (1)
