1. INTRODUCTION
Storytelling is an effective teaching and learning activity to help improve the

standard of English among pupils. The interactive art of storytelling involves
revealing the details of a story while provoking the imagination of the audience.
Stories are told as a means of entertainment, cultural preservation or instilling
moral values.
2. OBJECTIVES
• To enhance pupils’ confidence in using English.
• To give pupils the opportunity to use English in an interesting, authentic and

creative manner.
• To enhance and improve listening and speaking skills.
• To instill pupils’ interest in reading and writing in English.
3. RULES AND REGULATIONS
• The competition is open to all Year 3 pupils from government- aided schools.
Each school is allowed to send a maximum of 3 participants.
• The winners from the previous year may participate in the current year but the
text and presentation must not be an exact replica.
• Stories presented can be authentic, adapted or originally written.
• Stories presented must not touch on sensitive issues such as race, religion,
stereotyping, politics, etc.
• Stories must be thematically educational.
• Props, backdrops and sound effects are not allowed. Any use of these will allow
for disqualification by the judges.
• Time allocated to present the story is 3 to 4 minutes.

4. INFRINGEMENT
4.1 A maximum of 10 marks will be deducted if a contestant:
• touches on sensitive issues such as race, religion, politics, etc. – 2 marks

• presents a story below the stipulated time – 2 marks for every minute
• presents a story above the stipulated time – 2 marks for every minute
• uses props, backdrops and electronically-aided sound effects – 2 marks
• overdramatizing – 2 marks
4.2 A contestant will be disqualified if:

• he / she reads or refers to notes / reading materials.
• he / she is prompted by another person.
5. ADJUDICATION
1. The competition for Kelantan State Level competition will be as follows:

2. The competition at the state level will be judged by a panel of 3 judges,

appointed by the Kelantan State Education Department.
3. Points will be allocated according to the scoresheet.
3. The contestant with the majority of votes will be declared the winner.
4. THE DECISION OF THE JUDGES IS FINAL. NO APPEAL IS ALLOWED.
5. Individual marks will not be disclosed.

6. PRIZES
6.1 Prizes are awarded as follows :-

• Champion
• Second Prize winner
• Third Prize winner
• Fourth Prize winner
• Fifth Prize winner
6.2 Trophies and certificates of achievement will be awarded to the winning

contestants. Certificates of participation will be awarded to all participating
contestants.
6.0 EXCEPTION
All matters not stated in the concept paper or any exclusion to the rules and
all other unexpected matters and issues on interpretation will be decided
by the organising committee of the competition.
