This helps you develop the senses most important to a rounded musician. Make a brief note in each box explaining what has been done
during practice to develop these different areas. It will be an ongoing project lasting from your first introduction to a new piece to the
point where you are ready to perform it. For ideas you can read the practice checklist completed for you, however, there can never be
a definitive list so feel free to let your imagination run wild and be creative. There will probably be some overlaps between the boxes.
This is important, the boxes are not listed in order of priority or importance. You don’t need to go through them left to right, top to
bottom. Rather, pick an order relevant to you and be creative. This will make your learning multi-dimensional and interesting.

READING
Developing Sight-reading skills takes time and effort. It often appears that it ‘just happens’ for some people but this is seldom the case.
These people are just really fast at observing the important information. This sight-reading checklist will take you through the stages of
preparation and help you gain experience in deciphering new music. At first it will take you some time to complete but like everything
else speed will come with practice. Go through this process with each sight-reading piece you do.

Whilst learning you will do well make these your mind set, they remove anxiety from the process and give you space to LEARN!

Value rhythmic fluency over all else! The natural tendency is to prioritise note accuracy but this often comes at a price. First get good
at presenting an overview of the piece with accurate rhythm and steady pulse then you can begin to work on the note details within.
Concern yourself with a steady pulse NOT speed! At a comfortable/slow speed you will have far more time to practise looking ahead
and responding, reading fingering, dynamics & articulation, planning shifts in hand position and when necessary leaving out what you just
can’t get to on this occasion. In short you will be developing your skills, once they are in place you can look to increase the rate at which
you read.
