What is algebra?

Where is algebra used?

1) Algebra is used in Maths when we do not
know the exact number(s) in a calculation.

2) In algebra we use letters to represent

unknown values.

3) In algebra we use symbols to represent

unknown values.

4) Algebra can be used in business when

predicting sales, growth and profit.

An Expression Formed from letters, numbers, brackets and operation signs –

5x + 7 no equals sign.

An Equation A mathematical statement showing that 2 expressions are equal.

Solving the equation means finding the value of x for which this
5x + 7 = 22 occurs.

A Formula An equation that links sets of physical variables. In this formula, if the
P = 2l + 2w value of 2 variables are known, the third can be calculated.

An Identity The left hand side will always equal the right hand side, no matter
2l + 2w = 2(l + w) what numbers are substituted for the letters.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the vocabulary of expressions,

equations, formulae and identities
• Collect like terms, expand and simplify
algebra expressions
• Factorise algebra expressions
Expand and Simplify
• Can only add/subtract ‘like terms’

• Remember x and x² are not like terms

• Use the laws of indices to simplifying

expressions involving sums, products and
powers

Expanding Brackets

7(n +3)

7(n + 3) = 7n +21
Expanding Brackets

7a(2b-3a)

7a (2b-3a) = 14ab -21a²

2(a+5)
2(a+5)
= 2a+10
5(7a-3)
5(7a-3)
= 35a-15
a(3a-1)
a(3a-1)
2
= 3𝑎 -a
4a(2a+7b)
4a(2a+7b)
2
= 8𝑎 +28ab
