ARTS AND CRAFTS

PART 3

WHO ARE THE ARTISTS?

GUERRILLA GIRLS: Art for the Social Conscience

They are a group of feminist activist artists. They
assume the names of dead women artists and wear
gorilla masks in public. They use facts, humor and
visuals to complain about gender and ethnic
discrimination as well as corruption in politics, art,
film, and pop culture. They believe in a feminism
that fights discrimination and supports human
rights for all people and all genders. They have worked on hundreds of projects (billboards, posters, actions,
books, videos, stickers) all over the world. They have also done interventions and exhibitions at museums
attacking them for their discriminatory practices. They have been doing this since 1985. They are
anonymous because they want to focus on the issues and not on their personalities. It doesn’t matter who
they are. They could be anyone. They are everywhere. What’s next? More creative complaining!’
The Guerrilla Girls’s Guide to Behaving Badly:

Be a loser. Join the world of artistic

cooperation and collaboration. This is not a
competition.

Be impatient. Don’t sit around waiting!

Create your own projects now!

Be crazy. Create art that is strange and

funny to change people’s minds.

Be anonymous. Focus on the issues.

Don’t make only expensive art. Make

some cheap art that everyone can get (like
books or movies).

Complain, complain, complain. But be

creative about it.

Use the F word. Be a feminist.

FINAL TASK
WRITING

• WHAT IS AN ARTICLE?
An article is a piece of writing usually intended for publication in a newspaper, magazine or journal.
It is written for an audience, so it is essential to attract your readers’ attention. It can describe an
experience, an event, person or place; it can present an opinion or provide information. It must
include an eye-catching title that attracts the readers’ attention and suggests the theme of the
article.

2) Choose an artist who challenges the art world in some way. Find out information about them and
then write an article focusing on their art. Include the following information:

• Their name
• Where they are from
• Their art form
• The tools or material they use to work on their art
• What makes them different

Use Present Perfect Simple, Present Perfect Continuous and vocabulary connected with art. Add a title
and pictures.

You will have to present the article in front of the whole class. For your presentation include pictures, a
PowerPoint presentation or some type of visual representation of the artist’s artwork.
