Concrete Foundation
Concrete Foundation
• Composite Material
• Water, Aggregate (rock, sand,
gravel) and Portland Cement
• Cement binds with water and
aggregate
Concrete Mixing
Concrete Mixing
• Thorough mixing is essential
• Production is time-sensitive
• Mixing can take place both off and
on site
Concrete Slump
Concrete Slump
• A measure of consistency
• Indicates concrete ‘workability’
• Factors that affect slump:
Materials, Mixing Methods, Dosage,
etc.
Concrete Slump Results
Concrete Curing
Concrete Curing Methods
• Burlap or cotton mats & soaked with
water & sprinkled regularly
• Spraying and fogging operations
• Covering concrete with impervious
paper or plastic sheeting
Concrete Break Tests
Concrete Break Tests
• Performed in a laboratory
• Cylinders will be cast from same
mixture as field application
• Tested at 7 day intervals
• Provides strong indicator of
structural properties
Concrete Takeoff
• Unit of Measurement: Cubic Yards
• Calculation: L x W x H
• Conversion: ft3 to yd3
• Tip: Be sure to check your scale.

2 0.250 Inch 0.167 Lbs.
3 0.375 Inch 0.376 Lbs.
4 0.500 Inch 0.668 Lbs.
5 0.625 Inch 1.043 Lbs.
6 0.750 Inch 1.502 Lbs.
7 0.875 Inch 2.044 Lbs.
8 1.000 Inch 2.670 Lbs.
9 1.128 Inch 3.400 Lbs.
10 1.27 Inch 4.303 Lbs.
Rebar Takeoff
• Unit of Measurement: Lbs. / Foot
• Calculation: Linear Foot x Weight by Rebar
Type
• Conversion: None
• Tip: Verify what type of standard of rebar
you are measuring to ensure you
reference the correct table.

• Unit of Measurement: Square Foot
• Calculation: Length x Width
• Conversion: None
• Tip: The surface area of the
concrete will quantify the amount of
formwork required.
Concrete Takeoff Example #1
You are a Client Representative, and have
been asked to quantify how much Concrete
would be required to place a slab on grade
for a future parking lot.
Slab-on-grade will need to be 50 feet wide by
75 feet long by 8 inches thick.
The slab will be reinforced with #5 Rebar, laid
lengthwise 16” OC.
Concrete Takeoff Example #1

First, quantify the area of the slab.

75 x 50 = 3,750 Ft2
Next, convert inches to feet.
8/12 = 0.67
Next, solve for a cubic dimension.
3750 x 0.67 = 2,500 Ft3
Concrete Takeoff Example #1
REMEMBER to convert Ft3 to CY
2500 / 27 = 92.59 CY
Concrete Takeoff Example #1

Next, Quantify the length, quantities &

weights the of rebar.
75 Linear Feet
50 Feet Wide x 12 Inches = 600
Inches
Concrete Takeoff Example #1
600 Inches / 17” OC Placement = 38.5 ≈ 39 Total Rebar

39 Rebar x 75 Linear Feet = 2925 Total Linear Feet of

Rebar

2925 Total Linear Feet of Rebar x 1.043 Lbs. per Foot =

3050.76 Lbs. of Rebar

Clarification: Numbers of Rebars in one side = Dimension of

Opposite side/spacing + 1, rounded to the nearest integer.
Concrete Takeoff Example #1

Finally, quantify the surface area of the

concrete to determine the formwork.
(0.67 x 50) 2 = 67 Square Feet
(0.67 x 75) 2 = 100.5 Square Feet
Total of 167.5 Square Feet of Formwork
Example #1

SLAB Rebar
92.59cy 50’ x 12 inch = 600 Inches
600 / 26 = 37.5 Rebar
37.5 x 75 = 2,812.5 Ft
2,812.5 x 1.043 = 2,933.44 lbs
Concrete Takeoff Example #1
Description Qty. Unit
Bulk Concrete 92.59 CY
No. 5 Rebar 2,933.44 Lbs.
Formwork 167.5 SF
Concrete Takeoff Example #2

You are a contractor, and have been asked to

calculate how much concrete will be required for
25 Concrete Footings for a 48 Story Sky Scraper.,
covering a footprint of 200 x 400 feet.
The footings will be 2’L x 2’W x 12 inches deep.
Additionally, a foundation wall that is 8” Thick and
2’ tall will be placed continuously on each pad,
with No. 6 Rebar placed vertically 48” OC.
(4) No. 4 Rebar will be placed in each footing.
Concrete Takeoff Example #2
First, quantify the cubic feet of the footings.
2 x 2 x 1 = 4 Ft3
Next, multiply by the total quantity of footings.
4 Ft3 x 25 = 100 Ft3
Next, solve for a cubic dimension of the foundation
wall.
200 + 200 + 400 + 400 = 1200’ Foundation Wall
2’ x 0.67 x 1200 = 1,608 Ft3
Concrete Takeoff Example #2
REMEMBER to convert Ft3 to CY
(100 + 1608) / 27 = 63.26 CY
Concrete Takeoff Example #2
Next, quantify the length, quantities & weights the of
rebar.
(4) Total No. 4 Rebar Per Footing
= 100 Total No. 4 Rebar
2 x 100 Total No. 4 Rebar = 200 Linear Feet No. 4
Rebar
200 x 0.668 Lbs = 133.6 Lbs of No. 4 Rebar
Concrete Takeoff Example #2
1200 Linear Feet of Foundation Wall
1200 x 12 = 14,400 Inches
14,400” / 48” OC Placement = 300 Total No.6
Rebar
300 Rebar x 2 Linear Height = 600 Total
Linear Feet of No.6 Rebar
600 Total Linear Feet of No.6 Rebar x 1.502
Lbs. per Foot = 901.2 Lbs. of No.6 Rebar
Concrete Takeoff Example #2
Formwork for interior perimeter of the wall:
Footings: =(400’ - 8” x 2 (Thickness of foundation wall
(2’L x 1’H x 4) 25 = 200 Square removed)) x 2’ x 2 (Number of sides) +
Feet (200’ - 8” x 2 (Thickness of foundation wall
removed)) x 2’ x 2 (Number of sides)
Exterior Perimeter:
(200’L x 2’H) 2 = 800 Square Feet
(400’L x 2’H) 2 = 1,600 Square Converting feet to inches:
Feet = (4800” - 16”) x 24” x 2 + (2400” - 16”) x 24” x2
= 229,632 + 114,432
Total of 2,400 Square Feet of = 344,064 sq. inch
Formwork = 2389.3 sqft
Hint: For Formwork calculation of
Foundation Wall, we should also
Formwork for Foundation:
consider the formwork required for the = Exterior Perimeter + Interior Perimeter
interior perimeter of the wall. = 2400 + 2389.3
= 4789.3 sqft
