    The Merchant of Venice

    A court of justice
    (enter Duke, Antonio, Bassanio, Gratiano, Salerio and others.)

    Duke- Is Antonio here?

    Antonio- Yes sir, ready to please you.

    Duke - I feel sorry for you. You have to face a stony, and inhuman wretch who knows no mercy.

    Antonio- I have heard of his stubbornness.

    Duke- Go and call the Jew into the court.

    Salerio- He is coming my lord.

    Duke- make room and let him stand before our face. Have you no mercy Jew?

    Shylock- I have earned my purpose and I swear to have my revenge.

    Bassanio- This is no answer, thou unfeeling man to excuse the current of your cruelty.

    Shylock- I am not pleased to answer you.

    Bassanio- Do all men kill the things they do not love?

    Shylock- Is there any man who would not kill the thing that he truly hates?

    Bassanio- Every fault need not be turned into a cause for hatred.

    Shylock- Remember, you are arguing with a Jew.

    Antonio- Let's get on with it, have your will Jew.

    Bassanio- Think! here is six thousand ducats instead of three.

    Shylock- I will have none but my pound of flesh.

    Duke- How can God show mercy when you don't show mercy?

    Shylock- What mercy shall I show?

    Duke- With my power, I can dismiss this court.

    Salerio- My lord, a messenger with a letter from a doctor.

    Duke- Bring the letter and call the messenger.

    Bassanio to Antonio- Be of good courage my friend. I shall shed my blood for you.
    Antonio- You shall not die for me. Live your life.

    Duke- You come from Padua?

    Nerissa- Yes my lord.

    Bassanio- Why are you sharpening your knife Shylock?

    Shylock- To cut a pound of flesh from your friend.

    Gratiano- Criminals were hanged and noble prisoners were beheaded.

    Shylock- That's enough. Let's get on.

    Gratiano- You be dammed you dog.

    Shylock- Do not scream. You cannot erase the seal from my bond.

    Duke - This letter speaks of a young and learned doctor to our court. Where is he?

    Nerissa- Here he comes my lord.

    Clerk- The judge is sick and is unable to come, so, I send a young doctor from Rome.

    Duke- Did you understand the letter Shylock?

    Shylock- I did

    Duke- You are welcome. Take your place and are you aware of the case?

    Portia- I am thoroughly informed of the case.

    Portia- Is your name Shylock?

    Shylock- Shylock is my name.

    Portia- Do you confess the bond Antonio?

    Antonio- I do

    Shylock- My deeds upon my head, I crave the law.

    Portia- Is Antonio not able to give back the money?

    Bassanio- Here it is twice the money.

    Portia- There is no law in Venice that says you can pay twice the amount.

    Shylock- A Daniel come to judgement! yea, a Daniel!

    Portia- Let me see the bond. According to the law, the Jew may claim a pound of flesh nearest
    to the merchant's heart.

    Shylock- Oh! You are a worthy judge and wise.

    Portia- You must prepare yourself Antonio.


    Antonio- Most heartily I do.

    Portia- Is there a scale to weigh the flesh?

    Shylock- I have them already.

    Portia - Do you have a surgeon in case he bleeds to death?

    Shylock- Is it written in the bond?

    Portia- It is not written. But what if it happens?

    Shylock- I cannot find it.

    Portia- Come merchant, have you anything to say?

    Antonio- Nothing and I am ready.

    Portia- Wait a minute Shylock. The bond says only a pound of flesh, but no drop of blood must
    be shed.

    Shylock- Oh! learned judge, you make a fool out of me. Give me three times the money and let
    the Christian go.

    Portia- There's one more thing Shylock. If an alien takes Christian blood, then half of his wealth
    will go to his daughter and the other half will go to the government.

    Shylock- No, take my life and all and pardon me.
