ESP PROFESSOR PAPA DIOP. 2021

Dear learners,

My intention in providing this document is to humbly

contribute to your use of English which is mandatory
to whoever aims at communicating in the world of
scientific research and medicine
Applying Dewey’s teaching when he advocates his
“learning by doing” motto, I am inviting each and every
one to definitely know that they are at the kernel of the
learning processes.
The approach here is totally communicative in the
sense that learners are put in different contexts of
communication and after prompts have been given,
they are invited to practice their English in different
kinds of exercises.
Reading, writing, listening and speaking are the focal
skills here and involvement of every one is absolutely
welcomed.
From ESL to Medical English , the eclectic learning
material (texts, videos etc..) is distributed in 4
sequences within which there are challenging
exercises for you to enjoy.
With the promise to take into account your
suggestions after using this document I should thank
you all and sundry for your kind attention and our
shared love for English.

WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN MEDICINE?

IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH?

DIFFICULTIES?

ENGLISH AND MEDICAL STUDIES

READING
Medicine has two basic meanings, it refers to 1. The Science of Healing; the practice of the
diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease, and the promotion of health. 2. Medications,
drugs, substances used to treat and cure diseases, and to promote health. This collection of
articles focuses on the science of healing, its history from prehistoric times until today, and the
medications and healing methods used.

Some people might call medicine a regulated patient-focused health profession which is devoted
to the health and well-being of patients.

Whichever way medicine is described, the thrust of the meaning is the same - diagnosis,
treatment and prevention of disease, caring for patients and a dedication to their health and well-
being.

TEXT1

PASSIVE SMOKERS MAY DEVELOP EYE DISEASE

1. Passive smoking doubles the risk of developing a disease that can leave
sufferers partially blind , according to new research. In turn , for a
smoker, the risk of developing the disease is three times as great as that
of a non-smoker.
2. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of
partial blindness in characterised by degeneration and loss of
photoreceptor cell in the retina at the back of the eye, particularly in the
central, densely-packed section that detects detail in a scene .The result
of the disease is a blind spot in the centre of the visual field.

A._Vocab Elucidation : underline the most salient words- try to explain

them in English using your own words- find their equivalents in French. _
Use them in various contexts.
B. Summarize each chosen paragraph in French insisting on the
key ideas- Then translate the summary into English

3. John Sayer, a medical geneticist from Cambridge University, was studying

the genetic factors behind AMD when his team found the link with
smoking.
4. Looking at a group of 435 people suffering from AMD and 280 people
who leaved with them, Pr. Sayer’s team found that the more people
smoked, the greater their chances of developing the eye disease.
5. Smocking a packet of 20 cigarettes a day for more than 40 years tripled
the risk of developing AMD compared with no-smokers . Passive
smokers, defined as those who had lived with someone who smoked for
five years or more, were found to double their risk .The team did not find
any difference between men and women.
6. The researchers said that the mechanisms at work behind the increase in
risk are related to oxidative damage of the cells at the back of eye. This
build-up leads to damage to the membranes in the eyes, allowing the
growth of new blood vessels. Additional damage may also be caused by
the direct effect of the nicotine in tobacco.
