UNIT 11 Ethiopian Money

Unit Outcomes:
After completing this unit the students will be able to:
 Identify and distinguish Ethiopian currency.
 Explain with examples about money.
 Count notes and coins.
 Make change of the given note to another.
 Solve word problems realated to the money.

Introduction
This unit will enable you get a clear understanding of identifying and
distinguishing Ethiopian currency from others. Besides, it helps you to count
and make change with notes.
Money is very important in our day to day life. We use Birr notes and cents to
buy things such as pencil, Exercise book, food, car and so on.
The official currency of Ethiopia is the Ethiopian Birr (ETB).
The Ethiopian money is manufactured in two forms such as notes and coins.

11.1 Counting and Converting Money

Activity 1
1. List the notes that Ethiopia is using at the moment.

2. List the coins that Ethiopia is using at the moment.

3. Form groups and answer the following questions.

a) How many 1 birr notes and 5 birr note are counted in 10 Birr note?

b) How many 10 Birr notes are there in two 50 Birr notes?

The official currency of Ethiopia is the Ethiopian Birr (ETB). The Ethiopian money is
manufactured in two forms such as notes and coins.

A. Relationships among The notes

One 200 Birr note = Two 100 birr notes

One 100 Birr note = Two 50 Birr notes

One 50 Birr note = Five 10 Birr notes

One 10 Birr note = Two 5 Birr note

One 5 Birr note = Five 1 Birr Coins.


Example 1 Answer the following questions.

1. How many five Birr notes are there in one 50 Birr note?

2. How many100 Birr notes are there in four 200 Birr notes?

3. How many 1 Birr coins are counted in Three 10 Birr notes?

1) 50 = 5x10, there are 10 Five Birr note in 50 Birr note.

2) 4 x200 = 400 and 400 = 4 x 100 , Therefore there are four 100 Birr notes.

3) Three 10 Birr = 30 Birr = 30 x 1 Birr, so, there are Thirty 1 Birr coins are counted in
three 10 Birr notes.

Example 2
8 notes of hundred Birr, 5 notes of ten Birr and 2 one Birr coins =________Birr

Solution

8 notes of hundred Birr=8100=800 Birr

5 notes of ten Birr=510=50 Birr

2 one Birr coins =21= 2 Birr

Therefore, the total is 800 Birr + 50 Birr + 2Birr = 852 Birr.

Example1. How many 25 cents are there in 4 Birr?

Solution

2Birr=21 Birr

=2100 cents

= 200 cents

Example 2. How many 10 cents are there in 1 Birr and 20 cents?

1Birr= ten 10 cents = 10 x 10 = 100 cents

We add 20 cents and the total is 120 cents

Finally 120 cents = 1210 cents

The answer is 12.

Example3. How many 25 cents are counted in 2 Birr?

Solution

There for, there are eight 25 cents in 2 Birr.

Example 4. Change 760 cents to Birr and cents.

Solution

760 cents= 700 cents + 60 cents

=7100 cents + 60 cents

=71 Birr + 80 cents

=7 Birr and 80 cents

Example 1 Change 350 Birr to hundred and ten Birr notes.

Solution

350 Birr= 300 Birr+50 Birr

=3100 Birr+ 510 Birr

Example 2 Change 78 Birr to ten and one Birr notes.

Solution

78 Birr= 70 Birr+ 8 Birr

= 710 Birr +81 Birr

= 7 notes of ten Birr and 8 notes of one Birr.

11.3 Word Problems Related with Money

Example 1

Biniam has 600.25 Birr and his brother has 275.15 Birr. How much more money does
Biniam have than his brother?

Solution

Biniam has 600.25 Birr

His brother has 275.15 Birr

600.25
We subtract −275.15
325.10

Therefore, Biniam has 325.10 Birr more money than his brother.

Example 2

A father bought shirts for his 4 children. If he paid 15 Birr for each shirt, how much did
he spend?

Solution

Shirts are bought for 4 children.

Each shirt costs 15 Birr.

Therefore, the total cost of the shirts is 15 Birr  4=60 Birr.
