Unveiling Wonders at the Punjab Zoology Museum and Honey Bee Garden

Our one-day expedition on June 4th, 2024, wasn’t your typical field trip. It was a portal to a world
where history whispered from preserved forms and the secrets of nature buzzed on the wings of
industrious bees.

Introduction
Punjab University, Lahore, Pakistan, boasts a rich history of education. Within its walls lies a
vibrant hub dedicated to the biological sciences – the School of Biological Sciences. Established
in 2002, the school fosters a stimulating environment for students seeking to unravel the
complexities of the living world.
Department of Botany: Explores the fascinating realm of plants, from their intricate cellular
structures to their ecological roles.
Department of Zoology: Delves into the animal kingdom, studying behavior, physiology, and
evolution of diverse creatures.
Department of Biochemistry: Uncovers the chemical dance within living organisms,
understanding how molecules orchestrate life’s processes.
Department of Microbiology: Peers into the unseen world of microbes, exploring their impact on
health, disease, and the environment.
Molecular Biology Labs: Students gain hands-on experience in manipulating DNA, the blueprint
of life itself.
Biotechnology Labs: Here, they learn to harness the power of living organisms for medical and
industrial applications.
Physiology Labs: Students probe the inner workings of cells and tissues in plants and animals.

The inside journey of One Day Study Trip

Our adventure began at the Punjab Zoology Museum. Stepping through the grand entrance, we
were greeted by a hushed reverence, a testament to the creatures that had transcended time within
these walls. Here, the art of taxidermy wasn’t just preservation; it was a spell that captured the
essence of each magnificent being.

S
A taxidermized lizard, once a master of camouflage, now shimmered with an otherworldly
emerald glow, its scales whispering tales of sun-baked deserts. Coiled serpents, both venomous
and harmless, held their silent vigil, their scales glinting like obsidian under the museum lights.
We even encountered a mischievous monkey, forever frozen in a mid-air leap, its mischievous
grin hinting at the jungle spirit it once embodied.

But the true spectacle awaited us – a Bird of Paradise, its feathers a kaleidoscope of colors that
seemed to defy the boundaries of the natural world. Was it a creature from a mythical land, or a
living jewel forever trapped in time? Even the penguin, with its tuxedoed grace, seemed to
waddle with an air of penguin royalty.
A young lion cub, forever frozen in a playful pounce, emanated a raw power that sent shivers
down our spines. Nearby, a crocodile, its jaws agape, revealed a forest of teeth – a chilling
reminder of the prehistoric predators that ruled the Earth.

As we continued our exploration, we encountered the magnificent skull and tusks of an elephant,
a silent giant that spoke volumes about the majesty of the natural world. Even creatures from the
deep the of the ocean, like the spiky sea urchin and the eight-armed wonder, the octopus, held a
strange allure, whispering tales of unexplored watery realms.
A peculiar sight – a delicate shell nestled within a fan-like structure – sparked our curiosity. Was

it a seashell preserved within a coral formation, a testament to the intricate dance of life beneath
the waves? Or perhaps, a relic of a forgotten civilization, imbued with the magic of the sea?
We marveled at the glistening pearl shell, a testament to the beauty hidden within the ordinary.
Even the lowly cockroach, often reviled, took on a new fascination as we examined its intricate
form, a tiny marvel of nature’s engineering.
The majestic rose pelican, with its impressive wingspan and distinctive pouch, seemed like a
mythical creature straight out of a legend. And the bats, the only true flying mammals, with their
leathery wings outstretched, fueled our imaginations of fantastical creatures soaring through the
night.
Finally, the ostrich, the largest living bird, stood tall, a symbol of resilience and raw power.

Our final stop was the Honey Bee Garden, a haven of buzzing activity. Here, the magic wasn’t in
the preserved specimens, but in the vibrant dance of life. Donning safety hats, we felt a thrill of
anticipation as we were introduced to the queen bee, the heart of this industrious colony. The
concept of an “artificial” honey bee farm isn’t quite accurate. Honey bees are already a
domesticated species, and beekeeping, the traditional practice of raising bees in hives, is the
standard method for honey production.

 Bee Hives: Beekeepers use hives designed to provide a safe and productive environment
for honey bees. These hives can be man-made or mimic natural structures.
 Beekeeping Practices: Beekeepers maintain the hives, manage bee health, and harvest
honey at specific times.
 Importance of Honey Bees: Honey bees play a vital role in pollination, which is crucial
for plant reproduction and food security.
The beekeepers, with their gentle touch and specialized tools, unveiled the intricate world of
these essential pollinators. We learned about their vital role in maintaining the delicate balance of
nature, a reminder that even the smallest creatures can hold immense power.
As we left the Honey Bee Garden, the world seemed a little brighter, a little richer, imbued with
the magic of discovery and the wonder of the natural world. This wasn’t just a field trip; it was
an adventure that sparked curiosity, ignited imaginations, and left us with a newfound
appreciation for the extraordinary creatures that share our planet.
