On February 6th, 2023 at 4:17 a.m. local time, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked southeast
Turkey near the Syrian border. After the first quake, thousands aftershocks rumbled across the
region according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Cities across the region suffered widespread destruction, with nearly 50,000 buildings including
apartment buildings, schools, and hospitals now in ruins or too damaged to enter.
The earthquake left millions of people in urgent need of basic necessities like shelter, food,
clean water, and sanitation. Among those affected is Muhammed, a 10-year old Syrian boy whose
home was destroyed. Now living in a makeshift tent with his family, he said: “We have lost
everything. The quake ruined our house and my school has fallen.’’
In the first few weeks after the disaster, charities and volunteers supported over 50,000 people
with life-saving essentials, including food, heaters and fuel, hygiene kits, cash assistance, and more.
Evacuation and rescue operations continued over many weeks and thousands of people showed
great solidarity providing emotional support for the victims.
